I couldn’t stop my body from shaking violently.
“She’s in shock, I’ll give her something to calm her nerves. You can leave her here.”
“I’ll have guards posted at the door.” Justin answered the other voice. My head was pounding at this point and I closed my eyes to try and ease the pain. I could feel and hear the commotion around me of people coming in and out and talking to each other.
“I am going to give you something to ease the pain and help you sleep so I can get this thing out of you.” A woman said to me. I didn’t care what they did I just wanted to be left alone.
“Where is she?” an angry familiar voice demanded.
“Sir we have to get the dagger out of her hand before it causes more damage.”
“Where is she?” This time the question came out with a menacing tone. I felt someone in front of me and opened my eyes to see Tristan. He looked angry, and I wondered if maybe I should leave. I didn’t want to cause him any issues here in his home.
“I’ll be fine.” I managed to say, despite my burning throat. He looked me over and without a word left me alone again.
A woman who I assumed was the doctor came back around to me.
“Sorry dear but Alpha wanted to come in. He looked very upset.” She told me. “Now here this will make you sleepy and…” I stopped her from giving me the sedative.
“I just want to go to my room, can you get this out so I can go?” I whispered to her.
“It’ll hurt though.” She said looking concerned.
“I don’t care.”
“I’ll numb the area ok.” She said sympathetically and got to work. I wasn’t sure if it was the adrenaline or the medication, she gave me but I didn’t really mind the pain I felt as she worked on my hand. I heard my friends come outside the door and get turned away on orders from the Alpha. I was slightly annoyed that he was keeping my friends from seeing me but on the other had I wanted to be alone.
The doctor made quick work of removing the dagger from hand and stitching it up.
“You’ll have to come back and see me so we can make sure everything is healing well. I’ll send for you when it’s time for you to come back. I’ll have someone come and take you to your room so you can get some rest.” She said as Justin made his way in.
“No need I can take her.” He said moving around her. My head was still aching and was in no mood to argue with anyone, so I let him help me up and steady me. We made our way up to my room in silence and he helped me sit on my bed.
“Are you ok?” he asked finally. My hands were still shaking and I couldn’t get them to stop.
“Yes.” I lied.
“Tristan is sending Blackburn a clear message about this attack. He is not going to stand for this.” Justin assured me. I nodded not really knowing what to say.
“Are you going to be ok alone? Do you want me to call the girls? They have been worried about you.” He told me softly.
“I’ll be fine, I just want to be alone.”
“Ok. Tristan has ordered guards to be posted at your door and outside the castle perimeter. You’re safe now.” He assured.
“Thanks Justin.” I said.
“Get some rest. If you need me or any of us just send for us.” He said with a smile. I nodded to him and with that he was gone.
Emotions overcame me and all I could do was cry. I cried and cried curling up in my bed in sitting position. I was scared to lay down scared of another attack. I knew it was irrational, but I couldn’t help it.
The weight of it all hit me, my kingdom had been taken from me, I was attacked twice now, and on top of it all the person I was clearly still in love with had found their one and only mate. I took time to grieve my situation but knew it would get me nowhere, after some time I got up and headed over to the bathroom leaving the lights off as the moon was casting light through the window.
I splashed some water on my face trying to steady my nerves when I heard my bedroom door open and someone slip in. I reached for the first thing I could use as a weapon, which was a decorative statue in the bathroom. I saw the figure quietly come inside his back to me, I took the chance and went at him ready to take him down. I was stopped midway, though, his hand caught mine before I struck.
Tristan.
“I’m sorry I didn’t meant to scare you.” He said.
“What are you doing here? Its midnight.” I asked. My voice was a whisper and hoarse from before.
“I…I came to make sure you were ok.” He said after a moment. It was a cold night and I could feel the heat of his body near mine. His warm hand was still holding my arm slightly up.
“I’m ok.” I whispered out. His proximity was making it hard to think. He let go of my arm suddenly and turned away form me.
“Elizabeth you have to stay away from me. I have a mate now and I can’t do anything to endanger her or what we have together.”
“I…I don’t under-” I started to interject but he just kept talking.
“You have my full protection, and I will have my men look after you. I just can’t have you near us. I am sorry Elizabeth.”
“Tristan, I don’t understand. I would never get between the two you.”
“I know.” He said turning around. He took a step a towards me and then brought me into his arms. He hugged me for the first time since I had arrived. It felt so right being in his arms and he held me as if I would disappear. I finally felt safe for the first time. His scent was embracing me as well and I wanted nothing more than to stay like this with him, but just as quickly he let go of me and left my room, leaving me alone once more.
My head was spinning with our interaction, I just didn’t understand where that had come from. Had Vivian felt that I was too close to him? She had just arrived though, and our interactions were always professional. Had he thought that I was overstepping? Or was it just a warning without any provocation?
These questions filled my head as I tried to get some sleep.
