Diana got out of the taxi, that halted right in front of her house and listening to a car being pulled over in their driveway, Polly immediately jerked her ahead away from her phone and rushed towards the window of the living room, where she was seated along with her mother, who was working on some accounts for her salon. “What happened?” Emily asked, noticing her daughter rushing towards the window. “Oh! I thought it was Diana! But it’s just a taxi.” She stated in defiance, disappointed that her cousin, whom she expected to show up in the same convertible in which she left with the very same guy. Emily scoffed at her daughter expecting Diana to show up back that soon. “Don’t worry as I told you get some sleep. You have school tomorrow. Diana may come back late, I mean probably she would or perhaps who knows, she might not even come back tonight.” Emily couldn’t help but feel excited at that thought, as she continued working on her computer on certain accounts that needed her immediately attention. Polly kept her head stuck at the road, looking out to see if Diana was back or not. She just wanted to witness all the fairytale-esque stories that her cousin would tell her and inform her just how magical the date that she had been on was. As Polly was about to turn around, expecting the cab to be for someone else in the neighborhood, she felt her heart skip a beat and her horror plaster all over her face as she watched her own cousin get out of the cab. Diana paid the cab’s due fair and made her way down the walkway and back towards the house. “What the hell?” Polly whispered in shock, noticing Diana looking down and dejected with light mascara spread all around her eyes and her face looking nothing but glum. She expected Diana to return back home all happy and joyous, as she assumed that Adrian had the tendency to make her cousin happy but seeing just how low and defeated her cousin looked, Polly rushed out of the living room and went towards the door of her house. At the same time Emily also noticed her daughter running out of the living room after seeing something in the window. She closed down her laptop and walked towards the window to calm her wondering thoughts about what Polly might had seen but even she was left in complete awestruck as she noticed Diana walking down the walkway, with her shoulders slumped and her face hanging down and low. She also rushed out and went in to the foyer, where Polly had already opened up the door and stood rushed towards Diana, who walked aimlessly towards the house. Polly reached out towards Diana and gently tapped her shoulder. “Didi! What happened? Why are you here like this and back so soon?” She asked and Diana looked at Polly and realized that she was back home and now it was time for her to face her family and explain the whole incident to them. “I… I left earlier.” She stated fumbling through her words and Emily also walked out of the house and in to her walkway, where she grabbed Diana’s hand and pulled her inside. “Don’t stay out, someone might see you like this. Where is your coat?” she scolded her niece, pulling her inside the house and shut the door loudly behind once her daughter and Diana both were inside the house. Diana couldn’t help but feel weak and rattled as Emily dragged her further in the middle of the foyer and began scolding her. “You came back home, in this dress looking in you are in splits, in this dress all on your own. Where is that stupid boy, who took you out? Wasn’t it his responsibility to bring you back home?” she yelled, holding Diana responsible for her careless behavior and Diana held her tears back as Emily continued daunting her and giving her a good earful. “How come you could be so careless? And why is your condition like this? Did you let him take advantage of you and then did he throw you out? What was it that he was after all along and…” “I don’t know…” Diana stated lowly, stopping Emily from speaking any further and before Emily could’ve said another word Diana broke down in to tears, crying her heart out as she fell to the ground and began weeping in small whimpers, trying her best to hold back her tears and her cries. “What… what happened?” Emily asked, standing back in a state of complete shock afraid that Adrian may have done the unthinkable for her niece and that’s why Diana appeared back home in taxi in such a distorted manner. She bent down and tapped Diana’s face a little, making her look up and tried her best to look at her face and the rest of her condition. “Hey! Are you fine? did he hurt you?” she asked and tried to asses her clothes and her state but noticed that nothing about her clothes seemed to suggest otherwise. Her hair and her face were fine and had not incurred any signs of injury or any wounds, unlike when Ralph had attempted to assault Diana whereby he had hit her on the face and even ripped her clothes off. A pang of guilt immediately hit Emily’s heart. She had been so busy trying to get over her own ego that had been hurt when Ralph had chosen to go after her young niece that she did not even get Emily the necessary therapy or the self defense practice that she needed and required the most and instead, she dished her out when another rich man showed up and presented Diana to him on a sweet platter and it only made her feel horrible on the inside, making her wonder if Adrian had taken the wrong advantage of her niece. “Hey! Speak up.” Emily shook Diana once again but she only lept forward and hugged Emily, crying even harder in her arms and Emily also hugged Diana back as her heart continued to sank with every passing second. Polly stood back, holding her own tears as she watched her cousin cry her eyes out and looking at the way she cried, Polly only worried that the unthinkable may have happened with Diana. “Diana, at least tell me what happened and do you need any help? Let’s go to a hospital huh? Or to the police station tell me what do you want? Why are you crying like this?” Emily pulled Diana away from her and held her face in her palms, making Diana look at Emily but she only closed her eyes and cried even harder. “No… I just want to be alone and I just want to cry.” She told Emily, who pulled Diana back in her arms and patted her back gently and tried her best to sooth her. She looked up at her daughter who stood closer to the two. Even Polly had tears accumulated at the corner of her eyes and even she bawled and tried her best to remain calm and not began crying to make her mother worry even more. She only gently bent down and patted Diana’s back, soothing her for a minute and then leaned closer to her ear and she whispered gently at her. “Diana, listen if Adrian had hurt you, you need to tell us about it right now and we will help you in every possible manner. You don’t have to worry about anything at all and…” Hearing Polly calm and collected voice, Diana straightened up and turned around to find her cousin looking at her with teary eyes. She realized that she was being absurdly sad and it may have been causing quite the spiraling thought to course through her Aunt and cousin’s mind. She cleared her tears away and sniffed back her cries, trying her best to catch her breath but all those cries only made it hard for herself to breath in peace but she still spoke through the whimpers that her body was tremoring and tumbling through. “I… am… fine.” she spoke through sobs, as she began to catch hiccups with every breath that she took and Emily realized that not just at the home ut Diana must have cried on her way abck as well. “By any chance did Adrian…?” she asked and Diana shook her head. “Not this time. I didn’t let him cross his line with me this time.” Diana stated sternly and the remembrance of the past once again brought tears to her eyes and Polly was still lost when Emily had a thought struck her mind, making her widen her eyes slightly. She felt her face stretched back, as she was able to cling on to a clue. She had finally begun to understand some things. Things that were previously out of her grasp and reach. The reason why Diana was so adamant at ignoring Adrian was because he had done something to her in the past and that something was physical or perhaps so horrible that broke Diana entirely and that was the reason why she was running away from him to begin with. “Now that its clear that Adrian had not hurt you, Diana, don’t you think that you should tell us what happened?” She inquired and Diana simply shook her head. “I don’t want to talk about it.” she pleaded and Polly gestured at her mother to let Diana be. Emily felt slightly annoyed that each time Diana would struck off her plans to jump on a ladder and reach for money but each time she would screw over Emily’s plan not only would she cry but also get away from confrontation by playing the victim and Polly would jump in to protect her cousin. Fine! if I pushed any further, I would look like the bad guy like every other time. Emily rolled her eyes and shrugged. “Fine! then just don’t keep on crying here. get up, you need proper rest. We will talk tomorrow in the morning.” Emily helped Diana get up on her feet and handed her over to Polly who took Diana with her to the bedroom and helped her get inside the bed. She took Diana’s shoes off and tucked her in to the bed and gently patted her forehead. “Sleep well.” She told her as she turned the lights of the room off and made her way out of the room, tensed and wondering what may have happened between her and Adrian to make things go down in such an abrupt manner. As she walked down and entered the living room, she found her mother standing by the window and hearing the door of the living room open up Emily turned towards the door and found her daughter. “Did she say anything?” She asked and Polly shook her head. “Hmm, you should also get some sleep and try and go the school as early as you can. I notice that you have been missing your first periods every day. You should snap out of the habit of slacking back and try and be more comprehensive and astute. Okay?” Polly nodded and turned to leave but stopped and turned back to look at her mother. “Actually Mom! I want to ask you something.” Emily nodded back at her daughter and gestured her to speak up. “When Didi said that she didn’t let Adrian hurt her this time… what did she mean by that?” Even Emily didn’t know what exactly her niece meant but that but she decided to keep her daughter’s head in the calm for the moment. “I will talk to Diana in the morning and ask her all these things out, you don’t worry and go and get some sleep.” “Okay…” Polly rotated on her heels to leave but stopped once again. An urge developed in her heart where she wanted to tell her mother that Adrian helped her become the cheer captain and even took her out on a lunch just to get to know what Diana liked and what not but she stopped, afraid that she may have done something wrong by giving out too much information about her cousin and Adrian may have ended up taking advantage of Polly’s insolent and imbecile behavior. “Yes? Is there something else you want to say?” Emily pushed her daughter to speak up, noticing her hesitant behavior but Polly only shook her head back at her mother and bid her a good night. “Nothing! Just talk with Didi tomorrow and please be kind and polite towards her.” “Of course, don’t worry.” Emily smiled at his daughter, who remained reticent and quite worried, as she walked away and went towards her bedroom. And just as Polly left Emily only sighed and felt worried what could have happened in Diana and Adrian’s past that could have been so horrible for the girl to cry about in that manner. Emily knew that Diana’s past was quite troubled and the girl was hurt more than she could have normally ever taken or any person could take normally at her age but Emily realized that Adrian was also part of the troop who may have hurt Diana and he may have done something to her that was just as terrible as what everyone else did. Emily decided to call it a night and wished and only hoped that the next day would bring more clarity for her and her niece. ----------------------------------- Thank you for always reading and supporting my work <3
