Chapter 11 Javier daPaz felt nervous as he got out of his pirt car at the Vandenberg Spaceport. Despite having lived in Lompoc for fifteen years, this was only his third visit to the big interstellar terminal. He had an orderly mind, and even had he not been in fear for his life, the chaos throughout the spaceport would have instilled in him a feeling of uneasiness. He knew that his best chance for safety lay in anonymity. He joined the surging crowd, flowed with it as it pushed through the brightly lit corridors and past the flashing electric signs with their incongruous advertising slogans. His body joined the press of people on their way to or from some destination of greater or lesser urgency. Despite the mob, he felt naked and exposed. Everywhere he looked were well-armed security
