Chapter 13 Working Together

1083 Words
The rest of the evening was pleasant; people ate and drank while Jake tried not to embarrass himself further.   After they finished eating, Jake was still fiercely watching Kevin. He explained he was going to pay the bill while the others got ready to leave. As they started to walk toward the door, a waiter led two women to a nearby table. The first woman must have been in her early twenties, and she was wearing a tight red dress that accentuated her exquisite body. All of the men stared at her beautiful face and long legs.     Kevin had to admit men were shameless at times, especially when it came to women. They hardly ever looked at their face; they would usually start at their breasts, then move down to the legs, and finally look at her face and hair.   The woman’s delicate features enchanted the men in the restaurant. When she walked, the slit of her dress opened slightly, showing everyone people how long her legs were. If it had been ancient times, she would have started a war between countries, as Helen had. The only thing that was a turn-off was the cold expression on her face; it was even harsher than Emily's.   It was evident to the few people who knew Emily well that she only pretended to be cold to maintain her company's authority. However, this woman was cold inside and out, right down to her bones.   An older lady in her sixties followed behind the waiter and the young woman. As they walked past Kevin, he was stunned. Although the beautiful woman walked ahead, she was not giving an aura of strength, yet the old lady behind her had excellent abilities.   "What's the matter? Does that attractive woman enchant you?" Emily's cold voice came from behind and startled Kevin's thoughts.   "How is that even possible? I was just comparing, and she is not nearly as fabulous as my fiancée; nowhere near it!”   The young woman stopped; she clearly heard what Kevin had said. She glared back at him, but she was still confident about her appearance as she flipped her hair and continued walking.   Emily was happy to hear that and then coldly snorted, "Well, you are very observant."   The men around them nodded and gave Kevin the thumbs-up in agreement.   "Let's go!" Jake snarled. He looked at Kevin again; the show was about to start.   Suddenly, when they walked out of the restaurant, two white vans pulled up and stopped right in front of them. The sliding van door opened, and a dozen people jumped out and were ready to attack. The man leading the group was bald and had scars on top of his head; he and all of his gang were carrying PVC pipes to be used as weapons.   People rarely fought with knives, they were strictly controlled, and if one were caught using it to harm others, the consequences were horrendous. Steel pipes were hard to use, even if they killed people quickly. PVC was the best option; it was cheap, easy to buy, and easy to carry; it would leave large welts and bruises, and if need be, the end could stab people. The most significant aspect was that there was no problem getting it on a train or plane because the metal detectors didn't show it, making it the best choice for a weapon.     “Hey, kid! You little s**t, you didn’t pay back the money you owe. Where do you think you are going?” The bald man pointed at Kevin.   Kevin chuckled; they were using the oldest trick in the book. He had just arrived in town; there was no way he could owe them money. The men were asking for trouble, but Kevin wasn't worried. He looked at Jake, then understood what was going on.   "Call the police!" Kevin shouted as the leader rushed at him, leaving no time for him to prepare for an attack.   Emily knew a large group against one man was no joke, so she immediately dialed 9-1-1 and jumped back out of the way.   Kevin stepped closer to Jake and grabbed him by the arm, “Men should protect women, right? Let’s get them, Jake!”   Jake tried to escape from Kevin's grasp, but he was pushed into the group before getting away. His plan was falling apart, he wanted the gang to teach Kevin a lesson, and then he would step up to pay the money Kevin owed. The men would leave, and he would look like the hero, while Kevin looked bad. He would not only leave Emily with a great impression of him, but Kevin would learn not to mess with him.   A large man swung his PVC pipe to slam it into Kevin. He saw it coming and squatted to the ground, covering his head with his arms. Jake didn't see the swing coming in his direction after Kevin ducked down; the PVC pipe landed directly on his chest. With a crisp smacking sound, Jake fell to the ground, howling in pain.   "How dare you hit my friend?" Kevin jumped up and kicked the man in the crotch.   The bald man flew at the group, just as Jake was stumbling to get up. He stepped in front of the man, the PVC pipe, then landed on his head, and he fell back down.   Kevin reached out his hand to help Jake up, then asked with a look of concern, “Jake, are you okay? Did they hurt you?”   "Oh!" Jake screamed again. It turned out when Kevin pulled him up, it was only to block himself, and Jake got hit across the ass.   Even though Kevin was trying not to laugh, he didn’t want to be too cruel to Jake. He pulled Jake up beside him, then kicked the bald man in the knee.   "Ouch!" The man crashed to the ground holding his knee in pain. By the sounds of his screaming, there was a good chance it was broken.   Another man attacked Kevin from the side, but he moved, and it hit Jake's shoulder.   "Don't touch my friend! You bastard!" Kevin shouted and began kicking the man.   Emily's classmates were stunned to see how amazing Kevin and Jake were. They thought it was great that Jake used his body to shield Kevin while Kevin knocked them to the ground. They were thrilled that the two were cooperating so wonderfully.
