"Where are you?" I ask Jen on the line not waiting to hear her response yet, before I begin putting on my clothes.
"My place." She tells me and that is enough for me to hang up.
"What happened?" John who is laying on the bed gets up abruptly.
"Jen needs my help. I have to go." I reply him not once even turning to meet his gaze as I put on my clothes.
"Just like that?" He asks me and at his statement I turn to glance at him.
"I know we were in the middle of something, but it sounded really urgent, and I don't know maybe she's in trouble or something, I have to get to her." I inform him.
"Yeah, of course." Is all John says nodding his head in approval, yet deep down I know the leave of my absence is no way to talk about, but at this moment is definitely not a time for me to battle on that.
"Lock up when you leave, I'll see you later." I tell him lastly before picking my keys and out the door.
Jen usually describes me with one thing, as being extremely blunt, yet I can't help it that that's the way I am. And even if it wasn't the way I was, well s**t happens and it is what it is.
About Jen, my head races to possible scenarios as of what may be going on, yet it is not like Jen to be in trouble.
Not that I know of.
The relationship Jen and I hold, is based on the respect we have for each others private life. She doesn't go prying in my life and neither do I, until either of us want us to know.
But, with bond growing between us, which I know, we're passing such boundaries and I may not seem to mind.
It isn't so bad to have one person having your back always.
I get to Jen's house as I waste no time before parking my car by the side and walking to the door. I turn the door knob open, but it stays locked making me knock on the door.
"Hey Jen, it's Laura." I speak from the door wanting her to allow me entry. Within the moment, I sight Jen coming for the door, opening it to meet her in a state I have never seen to be.
Her nose and cheeks all red, while her forehead stays with a bruise that wasn't there earlier this morning. "What happened?" My voice coming stern while I begin to pull out my gun.
"No... No... It's not.. " Jen fails to get through with her point. "Just follow me." She eventually says while I watch her alarmingly, nevertheless, follow suit.
Jen furthers into her apartment with me behind, and when she comes to a stop so do I, as what lays on the floor of her apartment is something I didn't expect.
"Jen... " I call her name staring at the unknown man on the floor, covered in black pants and a hoodie. "Is he still breathing?" I don't bother asking for an explanation anymore after seeing the amount of blood on the floor oozing from his chest.
"I don't know... I checked his pulse and I... I don't think so Laura." Jen replies as her eyes tear up.
"f**k!" I run a hand through my hair staring the guy and then to Jen, whom never in my life have I seen her so frightened.
At the instant, I move closer to the John doe, taking a cloth from her kitchen where he is, and confirming my own theory, because from what I can see, Jen may not have a certain result with her fear.
My breath which I hang in hopes for Jen's words not to be true gets released, as I feel a slight and faint pulse on him, and briskly I pull out my phone and dial a number.
It doesn't take a wise man to know that Jen does not want the authorities to know about this, to which I'm respecting but once this gets out of hand, she won't be the only one involved with them.
"I have a problem Silas, he's still alive but I doubt for much longer." I speak the instant the other line gets picked up.
"Bring him by immediately." Silas answers as with that I end the call and face Jen.
"Come on let's get him out of here." I say to her.
"Where are we taking him to?" She asks me first.
"To a hospital of course, he is going to die if we don't act fast." I explain to her.
"No... No Laura. Don't you understand, once he is taken to the hospital not just him would be the one looked into, but as of the connections he has with me, bringing in the authorities..."
"Don't you think I know that? We do not have much time Jen and if I say I've got it covered, I've got it covered. I have a friend who works at a vet clinic and has treated many bad injuries of mine, not once or twice." I tell her before she revives her composure and nod at me in approval.
The John doe definitely not a piece of cake as it takes all in us to carry him to the Car, mean while avoiding any glance of the CCTV's.
My feet on the accelerator doesn't decrease, knowing that every second we waste can lead into a turn of unfortunate events for the both of us.
As we get to the clinic, I sight Silas already waiting for us by the entrance. "What took you this long?" Silas asks as soon as he reaches us, before helping Jen and I take the john doe out the car.
We get him inside, placing him on a table for animals, where as Silas cuts off his shirt exposing the bullet wound. Silas raises his head, giving me a glare of owing him an explanation. "Just make sure he lives, please." I plead of him.
"Give me the room then." He tells us where as Jen stares at me not wanting to leave.
"I trust him, it's fine." I tell her before she and Silas exchange looks, nevertheless, agrees to go out with me.
As we close the door from Silas working space, Jen slides down the wall, putting a hand over her head in confusion.
"I believe I have a right to know what happened Jen, since at this moment whatever turn of events this brings, I'm inside this already." I speak to her, while she remains silent and I let her.
"Take your time." I add as this time she turns to look at me with red eyes.
"That man you see there, was sent to implicate me." She begins.
"Why?" I ask her. "There must be a reason." I tell her while she just stares at me biting her lip.
"When I was fifteen, Venice always fell sick. At first we didn't know why she was always passing out, until her hair began to pull out." Jen says as each word after another her voice breaks.
"We were so poor that we hardly met a two square meal, where as my mother practically forgot she had daughters when ever she did her drugs. The first time when I saw Venice hair pull off was when I feared the most, and took her to a proper hospital where she was checked and we were told she had stage 2 of cancer, leukemia to be exact." Jen tells me as I don't know when I too begim biting my own lip.
Jen sniffles as a tear manages to escape her eye, which she wipes it instantly. " I was beyond devastated, I was broken because she,... Venice is my only family and I couldn't let her die or suffer.
I searched for every means to raise the twelve thousand they called her treatment fee, and couldn't get it, where as if we decided to wait for the generosity the hospital was giving, Venice may be dead by then, because there were a lot of people before us." Jen sniffles the more.
"Then an offer came, an offer I heard from a boy in my school of some men wanting a young girl who would be able to deliver a job for them. At first, I didn't know what it was, so I went ahead and met with them to know the nature of the job and when they told me I instantly rejected it."
"What was it they wanted you to do?" I ask Jen feeling more of her pain than expected.
"They wanted me to implicate a business partner of theirs, by planting hard drugs in his place whereas they knew they wouldn't be able to get it done, considering the tight security he has on, but they knew that he was a fetish for young girls, and here I was making their plan come to life." Jen continues with a painful laugh.
"I tried my best not to, but when Venice was hospitalized again, there was nothing... Nothing I could do.... I just had to." And as Jen speaks her words this time, so does she break into tears while I run to her, holding her head on my shoulders.
"Shhh.... It's fine now. I don't blame you Jen, we all have our skeletons, so I do not blame you." I soothe her back.
"Because you haven't heard the full story Laura." She raises her head away from me looking extremely devastated.
"It didn't just end like that. The man was taken to serve jail time for illegal possession and there I was watching it all, because as soon as he was taken so did they pay me fifteen grand, more than enough to pay Venice surgery." Jen explains while I stare at her in horror, yet I couldn't blame her, I just couldn't.
"I don't blame you still Jen, and I can't because I may have done the same thing. Yes you did a bad thing, but you're not a bad person, you're not, I want you to know that." I tell her sincerely.
"You don't?" Jen asks again and I nod my head.
"Yes, but I still do not understand what links John doe to this story." I face her asking.
"That... "
"Laura?" Silas cuts Jen off as he comes out of the room postponing what ever conversation it is we're having.
"How is he?" I ask forthright as the gaze Silas gives us is something to be perplexed about.
"He's alive."
