When I was a kid, our pack moved from Barcelona, España to this tropical country called "Filipinas". Yes, you heard it right, our pack moved. It is quite unusual for packs to move territories, but my papa, being an alpha and a high-ranking official, had no say in the matter.
We are a small pack of around three hundred wolves, and we live in a hacienda in the southernmost part of Barcelona, where we grow olive trees. Because the hacienda is a little out of the way from the city center, most of the wolves work there. One could only reach it by traveling by foot, unless he or she happens to own horses. Besides, growing olives needs a lot of care and attention, so our pack members have a handful of tasks to do.
When we moved, the king ordered Papa to oversee the center group of islands in the Filipinas, as it is part of the colonies under España’s rule.
Papa was given a piece of land in the western part of the country for us to set up a hacienda. For him to tend and rule the island as Gobernador.

My ankle hurts throughout the day. Mama brought me to our pack hospital to be checked. We were walking down the hallway towards the ward when Dad suddenly appeared, looking distraught.
"Hi, Papa," I said, my hands intertwined in mom's arm.I couldn't put weights on my injured foot yet.
"What happened to you, honey?" He had a worried expression on his face. Even though my papa is in his forties already, he still looks like a thirty-year-old man. He had the stance of a military man. He has brown hair and a chiseled body. He is taller than me and my mama as well. When he walks in the town center, he looks like a pole, standing out in the crowd as most Indios are shorter in stature.
Indios are natives of Filipinas, while those of us coming from the mother land are called Spaniards or Conquistadors.
Life here in the tropics is quite different from back home. One day it could be sunny and hot, while the next day it could be raining.
"Sweetie? Your papa is asking you. Are you okay?"
"Oh. Sorry, Papa." I looked down at my feet. "I’m alright. I just got into an accident on the stairs this morning and got my foot sprained. Nothing your little girl can’t handle."
Even though I’m already a teen, I still want to be my papa’s little girl. He always treats me like a kid when we are playing or just bonding as a father and daughter.
"Please be careful, niña. You know, you make us worry when you get into trouble." His thick Spanish accent makes his words sound like everything is jammed into one long word rather than a sentence.
Ma pulled me towards the door while Papa went on doing whatever he intended to do.
Papa is a busy man. Being the Gobernador of the island gives him a lot on his plate to manage other than pack matters.
The doctor checked my foot and said the first aid that was applied was good and I just needed to rest in the clinic so they could check on me from time to time. Ma left me there with the nurses afterwards.
As she was walking out of the room, her slim figure made a long shadow in the hallway as the afternoon sun was shining in the room.
"Take care, niña. I will be back before supper to pick you up," Mama said while still standing in the doorway . Her face is a bit darkened by the heat in the tropics, making her look a bit exotic with her brown eyes and small stature. She was around 5'4", but she walked tall and proud most days.
However, her face looks worried now, as if my injuries were more serious than they are. But I know that she is just worried that when I become an alpha, my pack will not respect me.
It’s quite hard to be a female in this society run by males. But then, being an alpha adds another layer of difficulty to that situation. I, being fragile right now does not sit well with the elders of the pack. It makes our pack vulnerable to attacks. However, there is a bright side to all this gloom and doom. Being in the tropics and on an island, the next pack is a few islands away from us.
That reminds me, since the packs here are scattered, they try to organize parties for the wolves to gather every year. It helps us look for our mates or just socialize. Next year, our pack will be hosting the party.
I was daydreaming when suddenly someone jumped into my bed. It was my little sister, Beatrice.
"Alex! Alex! Alex, can we play? I’m done with Saturday school. Look, I made a star out of my clay." She was smiling while she was showing her artwork. Since we are the daughters of a Gobernador, we are obliged to go to Saturday school when we are younger. Kids age four to eight years old are not yet allowed in girls’ schools, so they are home-schooled for six days a week.
Beatrice just turned six last month, and she is quite a prankster herself as well.
We would always prank our other sister, Meredith. She is the second child and is a little younger than me.
"Hey, chica!" a sudden, loud voice came from the door. It was my best friend, Claud. She was a petite girl with a round face and long black hair. Her eyes were light blue and her skin was tanned from all the swimming she did on the beach.
"Your ma told me you were here, so I visited." She shot me a mischievous smile. "What did you do this time to get yourself a sprained ankle?" She then chuckled, as if saying, I did this to myself on purpose to avoid something.
"This was an accident, Claud. Nothing else, " I said while smirking.
"I met a chico in town. His name is Lex, and he was so gorgeous and polite. I thought I would tell you right after I get back only to see you weren’t in the pack house." She shrugged her shoulders.
Claud is the second daughter of our beta, and his brother Jaime is our next beta. Ever since we were kids, I have had a huge crush on Jaime, and she knows it. Yes, that’s right, I have a girl crush and a boy crush. Oh, Moon Goddess! It is forbidden for a girl to be in love with another girl, but what can I do? I'm in love with a soul, not a gender.
"Lexi, come on. I want to play already."
"Sorry, Trish. I’m stuck in this room until supper." I looked at my foot for her to understand. It was now fully covered by a bandage to avoid extra movements and let the bone and muscles relax.
"Hmm. Why don’t we play here instead?" but in Claud.
"That’s a good idea!" Trish said while jumping out of bed.
"How about we play ‘I spy’?"
"No fun" Trish is a bit uneasy with the idea, as she isn’t familiar yet with the names of the objects in the room.
"Let’s play cards. I brought one from town today. They said it was pretty easy to play with."
Claud opened her brown bag and pulled out a small box with a couple of cards with numbers and drawings in it.
We played the whole afternoon until Ma came to pick us up.
