Chapter 3: Town Plaza

Claudia: It was a beautiful Saturday morning. I went with my brother to check out the new items in the shops around the plaza. I was walking aimlessly to the plaza’s center, admiring the view, when I suddenly hit a hard wall. That was when a harsh voice shot through my ears, I squinted my eyes to get a better view of what was ahead of me. "Watch where you are going, chica!" A tall, handsome young man said. He had brown hair like most of the boys I know, but there was something about his smile that drew my gaze in. "I apologize, I wasn’t paying attention," I replied with a bit of attitude in my tone. "Well, if it isn’t mi bonita." He smirked while looking intently at me. I was stunned as I didn’t recall his face or yet know his name. Why was he even calling me “his Bonita"? He had a lot of guts to call me that. It was already hot outside as the sun was almost at its peak. There were a couple of kids left in the plaza; either they were resting in the shade under the trees or playing in the grass. I was nervous as he was much bigger than me and I didn’t want to start a fight. "Sorry, but I don’t know you," I said while walking briskly towards the nearest shop. I stayed at the shop for a while, trying to check for new items. It was small, but there were a lot of things hanging from the ceiling with their price tags attached. There was also a table in the center where the other items were displayed. The shop owner was friendly and knew me, so she just left me to check the items on my own. When I noticed the boy was no longer in sight, I grabbed the item I liked and paid for it at the counter. I walked for a couple of minutes after that to look for my brother. However, I could not find him in the plaza. I tried asking some of his friends who were sitting under the Acacia tree, near the plaza’s church. They said he went with his friend to the shop that sells items from Europa. Ugh! I was there just a couple of minutes ago, and I didn’t like going back there. I was a bit hesitant since I might bump into that “cute” guy again. I shook my head. Did I just really call him cute? I can’t be serious. I need to focus and find my brother so we could go home. It’s almost lunch time. I heard my stomach grumble. "Oh great, now I’m hungry," I muttered. For wolves, it’s quite normal for us to be hungry all the time. Our bodies require a lot of energy to try to keep up with our training as well as our metabolism. There are days when I could even finish one whole bowl of pastillas in one sitting. It’s a sweet delicacy that can be found here in the tropics. It’s made of cow milk and sugar. "Jaime," I called him, as I saw him talking to a guy. The stranger had his back on me. Thus, I could not see his face. I approached them. "There you are, Claud. I was looking for you. I want you to meet Miguel." He was pointing to the guy next to him. Oh no! It was the guy I bumped into earlier. "Hi again, mi bonita." He was smiling this time. "Buenos días." "Uhuh, Mano, can we go home? It’s almost lunch time and I’m hungry from all this walking." I turned towards Miguel. "It’s not nice to meet you, Miguel," I said in one breath, as I really don’t like his attitude. "Wait, you know each other?" "Yes." "No," I said, crossing my arms to emphasize my point. My dress is already sagging in the street as I was tired from the heat and I am already slouching. "Yes, we know each other. She bumped into me earlier, but I didn’t get her name." Miguel explained it to my brother while he was looking at me, surprised and amused at my reaction. "Niña, you are daydreaming again, huh?" "No, Mano. I was just admiring the plaza." "Well, if that’s what you said. Miguel here just arrived from España. He will be with our pack for a year." "Can we go now?" I really don’t care about him. There is just something about him that makes me feel annoyed. Meredith: My mother and Hermana had already walked out. It’s nice to have the sala all to myself. It’s quite rare to find the sala so quiet, especially since the pack house is the main entertainment area of our pack. It is in the middle of the hacienda, sitting on top of the hill and overlooking the whole hacienda. The house is made of bricks, stones, and wood. The manor, as the Indios would call it, is quite high, unlike other houses on the island. We are the only manor on this island, and our house is the only house with four floors. You might say it’s common for pack houses, but here on the island, Indios are not accustomed to manors or big houses. They live in small bamboo huts or two story houses made of stones and wood. Being the second daughter of the alpha, not much is expected of me, unlike Hermana. I am quite pleased as well, since I don’t like the pressure and the responsibilities. My only duty to the pack is to find my mate and become the gamma female. But that will be years from now since I’m still a kid. During the afternoon, I like to walk around the beach to watch the sunset. However, I was feeling a bit tired today, so I grabbed a book from the library to read. "Hermana, can we play together?" Trish made it a point to bother me every chance she had, and today she was very energetic. She was making a cute face and swaying her dress from side to side. "Hmm... How about you ask Hermana? I am tired and I’m not in the mood today." "Where is she? For sure she will play with me." She was excited at the mention of Alex, our older sister. They always get along easily, unlike me. Ma returned to the house and was calling us for lunch. "Niñas, vamonos, your papa will be here any second. Let’s get ready to eat." Trish grabbed Ma’s hand and they walked towards the dining table while I followed them. Papa entered the house and kissed Ma in the cheeks. He sat at the far end of the table reserved, for the family's head, with Ma to his right and me to his left. Trish, being younger, was beside Ma, so she could help her eat. Lunch was quiet, with the occasional sound of the spoon and fork hitting the plates. That’s how we were taught. We should be respectful of the food in front of us and eat silently. It’s only once we are done eating that we can speak. Papa cleared his throat and was about to speak when Trish suddenly stood up and hugged him. Papa took Trish, and she was sitting on Papa’s lap. "Today a new family will arrive from España. They will be staying here in our pack. Please be friendly and try to welcome them to our home. Darling, could you prepare the guest rooms? They have already arrived in town and are on their way here." Mama smiled and nodded her head. I was excited to see who this new family would be. I hope there will be someone my age so I could have a friend.
