Lexi’s POV
My knees bounced up and down as I sat on the living room couch in the Starks’ mansion with a rollercoaster of emotions within me. It had been a while and yet no one had come to welcome me which made me even more nervous.
As usual, as soon as I arrived at the mansion, I parked my bike and they collected my keys and helmet. Brie was really happy to be back, but somewhere deep in my heart, I felt heavy. I was certain that Dad knew the reason why the Starks had requested only me, but he didn’t reveal it in front of everyone. It was evident that he felt something off in my usual behavior, after all, he was my dad. Still, I couldn’t disobey Alpha, otherwise, the council would strip me of every position in the pack even though I was the Alpha’s daughter.
Soon, I heard the sound of a woman’s heels tapping across the marble floor, which was odd since I was expecting the tapping sound of a man’s shoes. Who is coming?
Curious, I turned my head towards the entrance and a beautiful girl emerged from the main entrance wearing a yellow bodycon short-sleeved dress with black stripes. She beamed with joy the minute she saw me and I smiled back in response.
“You must be Chris’s bodyguard.” She walked to me before taking a seat next to me and crossed her legs elegantly.
“Yes, and are you his girl—?” Brie growled from within me before I could complete my question and mention the word she hated.
“Oh, no! I am not his girlfriend. I am his younger sister. Dad told me how you saved his life and we are all indebted to you….um.….” she paused, unsure of my name.
“It’s Lexi, and what’s your name?” I asked.
“I am Camelia, you can call me Cam or Lia, whatever you want!” She was truly a bubbly girl who could win everyone’s hearts with just a few words.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t there to make friends or to be friendly. “I am sorry, but I can’t be informal. It’s my number one rule. You are my client, so I will call you Ms. Camelia.”
“Oh, come on! You can be formal with my dad and Chris, but there’s no need to be like that with me. Plus, it seems like we are almost the same age, Lexi.” Despite being from a wealthy family, Camelia seemed humble and simple.
Camelia Stark’s hair was golden-blond and she had brown eyes like Mr. Gerard Stark. Oddly, even though she claimed to be Chris’s sister, they looked completely different. According to their family features I briefly observed the previous day, not a single one of Chris’s features matched Camelia nor Mr. Stark. However, Camelia’s features were very similar to her dad, Mr. Stark, which led me to believe that Chris probably looked like his mother.
“Who cares, he is our mate! That’s enough for me!” Brie chuckled in my head.
After a few minutes, I heard Mr. Starks footsteps as he approached the living room. “Ah, there is the young lady who saved my son’s life. Camelia, she is the one I was talking about yesterday.”
Mr. Stark reached the living room and took a seat on a throne chair. Judging by the way he was dressed in a perfect full suit, I believed that he was also going to the office that morning and I was glad that I didn’t have to be alone with Chris.
“Yeah, I was just talking to her, Dad. She is too pretty for a door kicker!” Camelia giggled with Mr. Stark.
“Chris must be on the way, Lexi. You will get his daily schedule and routine from his manager later,” Mr. Stark said.
“Dad, I should leave now. I have some work to do. Lex, see you later, Babe!” Camelia winked at me and gave me a flying kiss.
She is truly a different girl! I kind of like her.
“I like her too! Plus, she is our mate’s sister!” Brie chuckled and I shushed her.
Then, I heard the sound of an elevator ding and the doors opened, revealing my mate—I mean, Chris. My throat turned dry and my heart started pounding in my chest. Chris rolled out from the elevator in his wheelchair and as usual, our eyes met.
While I was drooling over him, he flashed me his cute smile. I even noticed that when he smiled, his eyes shrunk. As usual, he was dressed in a professional suit for the office and I was wearing my kickass leather uniform. Stopping in front of me, Chris scanned me from top to bottom before his forehead frowned slightly.
Why did he do that? What’s wrong with my attire? Doesn’t he like it? Looking down, I checked my outfit with uncertainty.
“Good morning, Ms. Lexi!” he greeted me when he noticed that I was looking at myself.
My breath hitched. “M…Morning.”
Shit! Did I just stutter? Lexi Cronus, the kickass warrior of the Guardian Warrior pack, the Alpha’s daughter who can defeat almost all the warriors of the pack just stuttered! I mentally face-palmed myself.
“Dad, I’ll leave then. See you in the evening,” Chris said and the blood drained from my face. Mr. Stark is not coming with us! That means I have to spend the day with him again! He is the most uncomfortable person in the world to stay with.
“Aren’t you coming with us, Mr. Stark?” I asked casually.
“No, Lexi. I have to go visit the site of our future hotel. I won’t be able to join you both. Besides, Chris can handle the office and you can handle him.” Mr. Stark smiled.
Sighing to myself, I nodded. Only I knew how hard it was to handle him and manage the situation I was stuck in.
“Isn’t it so nice to be able to stay close to our mate?” Brie exclaimed. She was excited to see Chris again, so she kept interrupting me from time to time.
Mr. Stark got up from his chair and adjusted his blazer in preparation to leave the mansion. “Lexi, I have spoken to your father, Mr. Kyle. I strictly instructed him that I want you and only you as my son’s bodyguard. Chris told me how you saved him from getting shot. The police are interrogating the shooters as we speak. We will find out who was behind the attack soon.”
“By the way, Camelia was here earlier, did you meet her, Chris?” Mr. Stark asked his son.
Immediately, I looked down and took a step away, not wanting to eavesdrop on their family matters. But, when Chris didn’t answer Mr. Stark, I curiously raised my head. Imagine my surprise to see Chris looking at me without bothering to answer Mr. Stark.
This is awkward! Is he checking my clothes? I hope it’s not an issue for him. Besides, he is getting my protection service, so why should he be bothered by how I dress?
“Chris?” Mr. Stark called out and Chris’s gaze moved to Mr. Stark.
Chris squirmed uncomfortably as he realized that he didn’t pay attention to his dad. “Yes, Dad. Did you say something?”
“He is attracted to us!” Brie squealed in my mind.
“Can you be quiet and stay down, Brie?” I mind-linked her.
“I asked you if you met Camelia? She was here a few minutes ago,” Mr. Stark repeated his question.
“Oh, yes, Dad, I met her. She also told me that she met a guest also,” Chris replied, looking at me.
Why do I feel like his eyes are talking to me? It’s clear that he raised his eyebrows to signal that the guest he mentioned was me. I am sure that Camelia must have said something to him.
“Chris, I am getting late for the site visit, Son.” Mr. Stark clasped Chris’s shoulder before turning towards me. “Lexi, take care of him and make sure to request Chris’s schedule from his manager.”
After he left the living room, the all-familiar awkward silence ruled between us. My eyes ran all over the room nervously, but I made sure not to meet his eyes.
“If you are done drooling over my mansion and ignoring me, shall we go now?” Chris asked and my body froze.
Shit! Did he realize that I was ignoring his gaze? I mentally smacked my head on the wall.
“I wasn’t ignoring you, Mr. Chris,” I replied, desperately trying to maintain my professionalism and ensure there was only a formal relationship between us.
“Dad is not here, Lexi. Call me Chris.” He slowly moved his wheelchair towards me before stopping a few inches away from me. Then, he slowly raised his left hand toward me.
Wait, is he going to touch my hand? No, no, not again! Realizing what he was about to do, I quickly jumped back.
“Lexi, why are you scared? I just want to know if what I felt yesterday was not a mistake. I felt some sparks when you touched me. I need to know if I just imagined it. Come on, don’t be afraid.” Chris danced his fingers, eager to touch my hand.
Afraid? Of course I am afraid to get touched by him again! Everything is going to get worse if he touches me again.
“Mr. Chris, I don’t know what you are talking about. I told you before that I am here to work professionally. I accidentally touched you yesterday because it was necessary to save you,” I replied bravely.
“Yes, you are correct. I am sorry, Ms. Lexi. Let’s be formal then.” Chris’s friendly tone turned formal before he turned to leave.
“Let’s go,” he said and I followed behind him.
“You made him upset, Lex!” Brie’s sad voice filled my mind.
“Mind your business!” I silenced her and went to take my bike keys.
“Ms. Lexi, let’s be professional. You are my bodyguard and you are not allowed to drive your own vehicle while you are on duty,” Chris declared.
What sweet revenge by my mate! Shrugging my shoulders, I walked over to his vehicle. It was a black Hilux Cab and besides Chris, only the driver was inside.
Excited that I found a loophole in his arrangement, I opened my mouth, “Where’s the manager? If he is no—”
“Sit in the back seat, Ms. Lexi,” Chris ordered with an authoritative voice. Even though he was crippled, his aura was strong. Plus, after our little conversation, he was no longer the sweet Chris, instead, he turned into the Hitler Chris.
I walked calmly to the back seat and sat next to him before shutting the door with a loud thud to show him my anger.
“Don’t show your anger on my vehicle,” he said, without moving his gaze from his tablet.
Despite boiling in rage, I didn’t answer him knowing that if I did, he would know that I had anger management issues. Plus, if Dad knew that I had a serious argument with the client, things won’t go well for me. For one, he would cut my pay and allowances, which meant no new motorcycles.
So, I bit my tongue, wore my sunglasses, and kept scanning the road with my eagle eyes throughout the journey to ensure nothing suspicious was happening.
As soon as we reached Chris’s private office cabin, his manager entered. “Good morning, Sir!”
His manager was a man in his mid-forties that had an overall pleasant look. I was sitting on the couch and he gave me a lovely smile too.
“Good morning, Ms. Lexi!” he greeted me.
“Good morning, Mr.….” I paused when I realized that I didn’t know his name.
“Pardon me, I couldn’t introduce myself to you yesterday since it was such a busy day for me. I am Henry Gadot.” He moved forward to shake my hand.
But, before we could shake hands, Chris interrupted, “There’s no need to shake hands because Ms. Lexi is very professional and formal. Henry, ask Selena to come in.”
What an embarrassing moment! I had just gotten up a little to shake his hand politely and Chris rudely stopped us.
Mr. Henry’s face turned serious. “Ms. Lexi, I will brief you about the—”
“Mr. Henry, didn’t you hear what your boss ordered? Go and ask Selena to come here immediately.” Chris’s jaw clenched and he gritted his teeth, making Mr. Henry and I shocked to see such a side of him.
“Y…Yes, Sir.” Mr. Henry quickly left the room and Chris lowered his head back to his laptop keyboard.
Is he angry with me for not allowing him to touch me? How can I explain to him that the worst thing he can ever imagine will happen if he touches me?
“Don’t worry, he is our mate!” Brie replied, annoying me at the worst possible time.
“No! You better shut up, Brie! Don’t f*ck things up now!” I yelled at her as I shook my head.
“Are you okay, Ms. Lexi?” Chris asked.
Looking up, I realized that he had stopped working on the laptop and was looking at me.
“Y…yeah, I am fine,” I replied.
When Chris’s attention shifted back to his laptop, I took a deep breath just in time before his cabin door opened.
“Here enters the sl*t!” Brie growled and I tried my best to hide her growl so that it did not come out like last time.
“Good morning, Sir!” Selena greeted as she walked over to him.
As usual, she was wearing revealing clothes. Actually, nothing was covering her body besides some cloth over a few private parts. Judging by her figure, I was sure that she had gone through lips and b*east surgery to highlight them.
“Morning, Selena. Give me the file containing last month’s revenue share of all the hotels in our group.” Chris started a long business conversation with Selena while her greedy eyes were eye-r*ping Chris.
At least leave a crippled man alone, Selena. I mentally slapped her.
After a while, things were getting boring for me, so I decided to go out and take a walk. With a sigh, I stood up from my seat and took a step towards the door.
“Where are you going?” I heard Chris’s voice from behind me.
“There’s nothing for me to do here. So, I will have a coffee and come back,” I replied without turning back to look at him.
“Selena, ask the housekeeping department to set up a coffee machine in here and place two cups for it from today onwards, one for Ms. Lexi and the other for me,” Chris ordered in an arrogant and authoritative tone. Where has the sweet Chris gone?
However, his idea disrupted my plans of wanting to run away as far as possible from my mate. Plus, if I stayed there any longer, I was certain that Brie would definitely kill Selena soon.
“Mr. Chris, there’s no need to do that. I would love to go out and feel the warmth of the sunshine,” I replied.
Chris looked up at me with his sharp eyes. “I am not paying you to go out and feel the sunshine, Ms. Lexi. You need to stay here with me until I go back home. Remember, in my office, only my commands will work.”
Why does he have to be so rude? Don’t pull my hair, mate, or else you won’t like the other side of me. Grumbling to myself, I clenched my palms and gritted my teeth.
“Sir, don’t you like the coffee I made for you?” Selena asked in a seductive tone.
“Ms. Selena, let me give you a piece of advice. From tomorrow onwards you should wear decent clothes and behave professionally. Also, from today onwards, Ms. Lexi will prepare my coffee!” he declared in a sharp tone.
As soon as he said that, his manager entered the office cabin with a file in his hand. “Ms. Lexi, if you are free, I can give you Mr. Chris’s schedule.”
“Selena, you can go now,” Chris instructed before moving his gaze to his manager. “Mr. Henry, give me the file and for lunch, book a table for two at the Plaza Hotel.”
Mr. Henry handed the file over and nodded. “I will, Sir, but may I know for whom it is for, Sir?”
“For me and Ms. Lexi!”
