I Love your Smell ( Marilyn Tucker )

1322 Words
Rose and I both lapse into silence, contemplating the situation, until I notice that Adam has finally drifted into a deep sleep. "Kaylie, it seems like Adam recognizes your scent. Take off your shirt and place it on the pillow next to him so you can take a shower. Let's give it a try," Rose suggests enthusiastically. I nod and slowly unbutton my shirt. I fold it and put it on the pillow next to Adam, making sure to handle everything with extreme care to avoid waking the little baby. We exchange glances and quietly step back, moving away from the bed. As we see Adam remain fast asleep, we can't contain our excitement and whisper, "Yes... we did it," quickly covering our mouths to prevent Adam from waking up. I let out a relieved breath. Finally, I can take a shower and clean myself, as I am incredibly dirty. I look at Rose, who gazes at me with admiration in her eyes. "Kaylie, you have a stunning body," she remarks when she sees me in nothing but a loose black lace bra with loosened straps. I can only lower my head and blush. "You're truly a beautiful girl, just a bit neglected," she teases. "I don't have enough money to take care of myself," I reply with a smile, continuing, "I'll take a shower now, Rose. Please watch over Adam." I rush to the bathroom with my upper body exposed since my shirt is now serving as a pillowcase to keep Adam from crying. The warm water showers down my body, soothing my tired muscles and washing away the grime of the long journey. As the steam fills the bathroom, I can't help but think about the whirlwind of events that have brought me here. From delivering Adam to finding solace in the company of Rose, it feels like my life has taken an unexpected turn. After what feels like a blissful eternity under the shower, I step out, wrapping a towel around my body. Rose is waiting outside, holding a fresh set of clothes for me. "Here, Kaylie. I thought you might need these," Rose says, her eyes filled with genuine care. "Thank you, Rose. You've been so kind to me," I reply, grateful for her thoughtfulness. I quickly get dressed, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. As I step out of the bathroom, I notice Rose has also set up a small makeup kit on the dressing table. It contains an array of cosmetics, carefully selected to enhance my features. "Rose, you've really thought of everything," I say, marveling at her attention to detail. "I wanted to make sure you feel pampered and special, Kaylie. You deserve it," Rose replies, her voice filled with warmth. I hesitate for a moment, unsure about applying makeup. It's never something I have considered before, but the idea of trying something new intrigues me. "Would you mind showing me how to use these?" I ask Rose, holding up a makeup brush. Rose's face lights up with excitement. "Of course! I'd be delighted to give you a makeover." We spend the next hour in front of the mirror, with Rose guiding me through each step of the makeup application process. She patiently shows me how to highlight my features and enhance my natural beauty. As I look at myself in the mirror, I can't believe the transformation. The makeup accentuates my eyes, giving them a mesmerizing depth. A touch of blush adds a healthy glow to my cheeks, and a subtle hint of lipstick completes the look. "Wow, Rose, I never knew makeup could make such a difference. Thank you for teaching me," I say, genuinely surprised by the result. "You were beautiful to begin with, Kaylie. The makeup just enhances your natural beauty," Rose reassures me with a warm smile. Feeling confident and rejuvenated, I walk over to Adam and gaze down at his peaceful face. "You see, Adam? Look how pretty your mama looks," I whisper, my heart swelling with newfound joy. As I settle down in a nearby chair, Rose joins me, her voice filled with tenderness. "Kaylie, I have a feeling that you and Adam are destined for something extraordinary. The way he clings to you, the connection you share, it's not something that happens by chance. You've brought light into his life, and he's brought purpose into yours." I look at Rose, struck by her words. There is a depth to her insight that resonates with my own intuition. "Little baby Adam has truly captured my heart. I feel a strong bond with him and Leah. Especially since Leah entrusted me with the task of bringing him to his father, who she believed would love and protect Adam. But after meeting Lucas, I have my doubts. He shows no affection for his own child. So, I thought maybe I should love Adam as if he were my own and let Lucas drown in his sorrow. Adam doesn't deserve to be treated like that," I express my emotions passionately. "Be patient, Kaylie. Give Lucas some time. We have to let him grieve for a while until he can rise again. I agree with your decision to love Adam because, at this moment, you are the only person he's attached to. Without you, Adam wouldn't stand a chance. I'm grateful that Leah met you during her fight for her life. If it wasn't for you, Adam wouldn't have survived. I wonder who hurt Leah?" Rose soothes me. Suddenly, I remember the necklace Leah gave me and I show it to Rose. "Oh, this is indeed Leah's necklace, passed down by her family. The Red Sapphire Pack. Keep it for now and give it to Lucas when he has healed from his sorrow," Rose suggests. "Come on. Tomorrow, I'll take you around the city of San Lucas so that you can feel at home here," Rose adds. "What about Adam?" I ask, looking at Adam who is still peacefully sleeping on my bed, without even having his own crib. This handsome baby is truly pitiful. "We'll take him with us if he can't bear to be away from your scent. We'll bring him along, and he'll always be by your side," Rose says, laughing. “By the way, Rose, what do you think? How much should I charge Lucas for my babysitting services? I mean, I'm practically working round the clock because Adam refuses to let me out of his sight," I ask, raising an eyebrow. Rose bursts into laughter, her laughter echoing through the room. "Oh, Kaylie, you're a genius! Since you're providing exclusive, 24/7 care for Adam, I'd say you deserve a salary fit for a celebrity nanny. We're talking private jet and diamond tiara territory here!" she exclaims, unable to contain her amusement. I join in the laughter, imagining myself in a sparkling tiara while changing diapers. "Well, if I'm going to be the royal nanny, I'll need a royal salary. Maybe I should start drafting a contract and include demands for a personal chef and a lifetime supply of chocolate. After all, raising a child requires sustenance, right?" I quip, playfully pretending to stroke an imaginary beard. Rose clutches her stomach, laughing uncontrollably. "Oh, Kaylie, you have me in stitches! I can already imagine Lucas's face when he reads your list of demands. But hey, if Adam's attachment to you is any indication, he'll be willing to grant you whatever you ask for," she replies, her voice laced with humor. We continue to exchange jokes and humorous banter, finding solace in laughter amidst the challenges that lie ahead. In that moment, I realize that even in the midst of uncertainty and sorrow, a good laugh can lighten the load and bring people closer together. And with Rose by my side, I know that navigating the whims and demands of baby Adam will be an adventure filled with laughter and love.
