The entire plane trip was nothing but silence as we all were pondering on the many things that could go wrong. My biggest fear was that Renesmee would try and find us which would put her in grave danger. Not only could the Volturi try and track her but she could also drown trying to get back to the mainland. This was also Rhiannon's fear and somewhat Ethans as they knew if she attempted this they would have to do everything in their power to stop her.
As the sun hit the middle of the sky the next day Renesmee had awaken. It shocked me how long she had slept. Almost 10 hours. Immediately I could tell something was different. Her mind was foggy, dark, sad.
"Renesmee." I whispered as I stroked her hair gently. After a few seconds she moved her gaze from looking at Bella's face to my own. She knew something wasn't right just from her mothers look. "What's wrong?" I asked her.
"Mommy is sad." She whispered before putting her hand on my cheek to show me what she saw.
I took her hand into mine and kissed each finger.
"Your mommy is just worried about the Volturi. That's all." I lied slightly.
I felt awful lying to my daughter but it needed to be done. At least while we were thousands of feet in the air. Renesmee seemed to be content with the answer I gave to her and her mind went to other things. The first was food. She was hungry. For now she ate some of the food I brought with me from the house. I made her a sandwich that she devoured in under a minute. Then she started picking random vegetables from a salad.
When she had finished she went straight to the window and began looking for shapes in the clouds again. By the time the sun began to disappear into the horizon we began descending into Rio De Janiro.
Minutes after we landed we were in a car and on our way to the harbor where our family kept our trusty boat. From there it was just over a half an hour before we docked at Isle Esme. I couldn't help but smile as I stepped off the boat with my wife's hand in mine and Renesmee in my other. So much had changed in the past 7 months alone then my entire vampire life.
My smile quickly faded when the reason we were here together flitted to the front of my mind. I knew Renesmee wouldn't let us go without a fit of a fight so it left us one option. We would leave while she was sleeping. For now, we would spend time being happy, together.
"It's so pretty mommy!" Renesmee said cheerfully as she attempted to tow us to the house.
We followed her through the house as she insisted on seeing everything. Then we headed to the beach, which was illuminated by the rising full moon. After we headed back into the house Bella took Renesmee into the bathroom to bath. Renesmee knew how to take care of herself when it came to bathing but Bella wanted to make absolute sure that she could manage.
After Renesmee's bath I helped Renesmee into her pajama's and then watched as Bella brushed her hair. Then it was bedtime.
"Daddy?" Renesmee called as Bella and I headed out of the room. I stopped and turned towards her. "Tell me a story." she asked.
Smiling I walked back over towards the bed and climbed in beside her.
"What kind of story?"
"Any story."
In turn I told her about the first time I met her mother. In five minutes she was sleeping soundly. Bella came back into the room and sat with me while we watched Renesmee dream. Then it was time to go. It took Bella and I so much strength to leave the room knowing that this could be the last time we would see our daughter.
We had just stepped outside the house and headed to the boat when we heard footsteps behind us. From the accompaniment of the hummingbird heart beat I knew it was Renesmee.
"Mommy, daddy. Where are you going?" she asked as she launched herself into our arms.
Before I could reply she had her hand to my face. She saw exactly what I didn't want her to know. When she was satisfied she dropped her hand. Her nose immeadiately tinted red and then tears began to flow.
"Why are you leaving me? Is it because I caused all this trouble?" She cried. Bella quickly took Renesmee from my arms and attempted to soothe her.
"Renesmee you know that's not true. We are doing this to keep you safe." Bella replied.
We were on a time frame and needed to be back as soon as possible. Alice said that the Volturi were making a early appearance and they would need us. This was the reason I was hoping to have a quick, quiet departure, despite the pain it would cause all of us.
"Bella." I murmered as gently as I could. "We need to go. The Volturi."
Bella kissed Renesmee on her face and then set her to her feet.
"Renesmee, you need to go back inside and go to sleep okay?" Bella said.
"No! Please don't leave me mommy." Renesmee cried as she wrapped her arms around Bella in a vice grip. "I'll eat my human food, even that yucky green stuff. I'll go back to school and I'll be a big girl." She looked to me, pain in her eyes. "Daddy please don't leave me." she begged to me. I felt broken inside as I listened to her pleading.
I knelt down on my knee and placed my hands on her shoulders.
"Renesmee we are doing this for your safety. The Volturi won't be able to find you here. Rhiannon and Ethan will take care of you and make sure you are safe. Gracie will be your friend and keep you company."
"I don't WANT them. I want you and mommy!" She screamed.
Then we were joined by Rhiannon and Ethan. Rhiannon took Renesmee into her arms and started back to the house. Somehow Renesmee managed to get out of her grip and ran back to us. Just before she made it to our sides Ethan grabbed her around the waist and picked her up.
"Come on Renesmee time for bed." Ethan said in what he thought was a gentle, soothing voice.
I stood, frozen, in place as Ethan carried Renesmee, over his shoulder, to the house. The agony in her face ripped at my insides. It was as much pain, if not more, as I was in during my transformation.
"Daddy, mommy. Please! I don't care about being safe I want to be with you!" She screamed before she disappeared into the house.
With my vampire hearing I was able to hear Ethan tell us to leave. For several human minutes I remained frozen until Bella couldn't take the pain anymore and literally dragged me to the boat. Then we were on our way.
Several times while we were enroute to the mainland I wanted to turn around and head back to the island for my daughter. But I knew if I wanted her to have a promised future and be safe I needed to let her go.
As we took off from the airport in the jet I kept my eyes focused on the ocean below. Somewhere in that ocean was the island and on that island was our daughter. I could still feel the pain I was rendered under as my daughter was begging for us to keep her. I could barely stand being in my body knowing that I had caused that pain.
Just as we were landing in Washington the next day Rhiannon called us and let us know that Renesmee had just fallen asleep. We asked her how she behaved when we left and she informed us that she had thrown a huge fit and tried to come after us. Ethan had to go into the ocean to bring her back several times. Then for the next 4 hours he had to hold her in place so she wouldn't try and run away. She eventually grew exhausted and then fell asleep.
When I hung up the phone I took Bella's hand into mine. It was time to go. The Volturi would soon be rearing their ugly heads in our direction. In order for us to be able to see our daughter again we needed to rid them from the world so she could be safe. As well we needed to survive the process.
