After convincing Ethan that Gracie would be in danger if she remained here we only had to persuade Rhiannon into leaving behind her sisters for Renesmee's sake. Once that was over we were on our way to Forks Washington.
Ethan rode the entire way sitting between Gracie and Renesmee while Rhiannon sat in the back. It was a quiet drive, unless you took into consideration of the constant ringing that blew up both my and Bella's cell phone. We didn't even have to look to know it was Jacob calling since his ringtone was programmed to be the howling of a wolf.
After the third ring though we decided it would be best to put it on silent. But even then we were able to hear the vibrations that let us know he wasn't going to give up on trying to get a hold of us. I already knew what he wanted and it was to know where we were going, where Renesmee was going. It bothered me slightly to know that Jacob would be going out of his mind in worry for her but in order keep her safe he couldn't know.
When we pulled up outside our Forks home I got out and retrieved Renesmee who had fallen asleep just as we crossed the Canadian border into Washington. I carried her inside and rested her gently on the couch that Emmett used to watch football. As I moved to rise from her side I froze. Just looking into her face brought me much pain. This could very well be the last time I ever got to see her, forever.
My knees buckled and I gently lowered myself to the ground beside the couch.
"My angel." I ran my hand gently through her hair.
Then there were familiar hands on my shoulders. I shivered under Bella's touch as several memories flittered through my mind. Happy memories, painful memories, relieving memories. Gently I pulled her around to my front and brought her down on my lap. Wrapping my arms around her I leaned my head to hers and we sat silent.
"What is this place?" Ethan spoke after a half an hour of sitting with his sister quietly. Inhaling I lifted my head just enough to look into my wifes eyes. Then I spoke.
"This was my families home before we moved to Denali."
"So we are going to stay here until its safe?" Ethan asked.
I shook my head from left to right. "We aren't staying."
"So then where are we going?" He asked.
"My wife and I are returning to Denali to fight. You, Gracie and Renesmee and Rhiannon will be going to Isle Esme." I responded. Bella cradled my face.
"But we will take you there to make sure you arrive safetly." Bella said firmly.
This wasn't part of the plan but I knew Bella wouldn't accept any less and I couldn't deny that I didn't wanted to part ways this early. I wanted to hold my wife and my daughter in my arms for all of eternity.
"When were you going to tell me this?" Ethan asked.
"We planned to tell you here but you beat us to the start of the conversation. See, we needed to get away from everyone else before we divulged the plan. Trust me. This was necessary." Bella explained.
"But my sisters." Rhiannon said.
"Do you think its easy to leave my daughter knowing we may never see her again." I said.
After that Rhiannon was silent. A peek into her mind showed her sadness for my wife and I. She wouldn't go against the plan. She would do anything to protect my daughter as she protected her sisters.
After a few moments of listening to Ethans thoughts he finally gave in. His thoughts were more focused on his sister but he was definitely in which was good. Renesmee would be protected. She would be safe.
I heard her thoughts change from dreamlike to processing thoughts. I looked down just as her eyes opened and smiled.
"My angel."
"Daddy I'm-" Before she could finish telling me that she was hungry she sniffed the air. Immeadiately she sat up and looked around before looking back at me. "Daddy why are we back in Forks?" she asked. She remembered the smell of our home in Forks and knew that was where we were.
This seemed like a time as good as any to explain to my daughter that she would have to go away and might never see her mother or myself ever again. Still, if I did that she could become a bit of a problem and wouldn't behave. If she had an outburst there would be no way that I could get her on a plane.
Bella looked at me and I gave my head a slight shake when Renesmee glanced away. I didn't have to read Bella's mind to know her next thought. She knew that if we didn't tell Renesmee she would forced the information she wanted to know from our minds using her gift.
"We are going on a vacation to Isle Esme." She said, giving her a satisfying answer.
Renesmee's face lit up happily. She was excited to go to the island as, just like the meadow, she had only heard of it for the longest time before she actually got to go herself.
Then my cell phone rang. Raising to my feet I answered it. It was Alice.
"Edward its Alice."
"I know."
"Well if you are going to escort them to the island you need to do it now and get back we might have a situation." At this note I walked to the back of the room and stared outside the window to the river that ran through the property.
"What do you mean?"
"Something instigated the Volturi. They are coming, soon."
I hung up my phone and dialed a new number. After a brief ring I was talking to a charter agent. I chartered a jet for the trip there and the trip back and then hung up.
"It's time to go." I said firmly as I walked across the room and brought my wife to her feet. "Rhiannon can you take Renesmee out to the car and make sure she is buckled in?" She nodded her head and the two headed outside.
When they were out of range Ethan was at my side with his sister beside him.
"What is it?" He asked. "I know something isn't right."
"Alice saw the Volturi making a early appearance so we need to get back meaning we need to leave, now." I explained as I went into the kitchen to grab some food for Renesmee.
When I turned away from the fridge Ethan and Gracie were gone. I knew they had left for the truck.
"This is really happening." Bella said. I sat the food down and brought her into my arms.
"It's going to be okay Bella. Renesmee will be safe and taken care of Rhiannon and Ethan will make sure of it."
"It's just not fair. I've had so little time with her." She said in a wavery voice. Before I could console her she manuevered out of my arms and headed to the truck. It was apparent that she knew no promises could be made and no words could fix the pain.
In the next half a second I headed to the truck and got in. Once I gave Renesmee her food I started the truck and we were on our way to the private landing. Though I was an excellent driver it took me so much strength to simply concentrate. My mind was on my daughter and her future. A future that I may not be a part of.
I started thinking of the many things I wouldn't get to be a part of. Her graduation from high school, her first day of college, her first boyfriend -though I didn't exactly welcome that-, her first degree, her first job. Then my mind moved onto the other things. Walking her down the isle at her wedding, giving her away to her husband. Seeing my first grandchild -another moment I wouldn't be too fond of-. I shook my head to rid the thoughts as we pulled up to the airport in Seattle.
I paid for a spot in the parking garage and then got the luggage out of the back and we headed inside. In just mere minutes, that felt like seconds, we were being ushered onto our private jet and then we were in the air.
Bella sat in silence beside me while Renesmee peered out the window at the view below. Rhiannon sat by herself near the back and Ethan and Gracie sat near the center. The only person who seemed to be happy was Renesmee. Then again she didn't know of the upcoming event of us leaving her. How would we do this? How could we just leave our daughter.
"Daddy look!" Renesmee said as we began flying through clouds. "They are pretty." When she spoke like this she seemed like the child she truly was instead of the mature child she mentally was. I gave Renesmee a big smile and then suggested that she try and look for shapes in the clouds which distracted her immeadiately. If she was to study our expressions long enough she would realize something was wrong. The best thing to do would be to keep her busy until she fell asleep.
