Chapter 1
As I held the sleeping body of my precious daughter in my arms I looked into her face. Barely there were the trails of the dried up tears that had found there way from her eyes and down her cheeks.
Looking into her mind I was immediately mesmerized by her dreams.
There was no fear, no sadness. Only smiles, happiness and laughter. Renesmee wasn't afraid, she was happy.
I wrapped my arms more securely around her before I rose to my feet. In the next half second my wife mimicked me and rose to hers as well.
"She's sleeping." I murmured to Bella as I headed upstairs to tuck her into bed.
Entering the bedroom I adjusted my daughter in my arms so I could turn down her bed sheets. Then I laid her down gently.
Before I could move Bella stepped in an tucked her in. I smiled as she sat down on the edge of her bed and began running her fingers through her hair.
"I won't ever let anyone hurt you Renesmee." My wife whispered.
I titled my head slowly to the side as I watched them both. My wife and my daughter, the most important things in my life.
The value in my eyes for these two people right here were more than I could accumulate in my life of forever. Nothing could ever replace them. Nothing.
As a husband and father it is my duty to protect them.
I took in an unneeded breath before I left the room and went back downstairs. As I came onto the scene with our vampire friends and acquaintances I began formulating a plan.
"I need, I need-" I began as I ran my fingers through my hair. I looked up at the room and found them all staring at me. "Where are we on terms of head count?" I finally said.
Alice waded through the sea of faces and stopped before me. Immediately her eyes glazed over and I knew she was looking for me. After a few moments she growled before looking at me.
"Everytime we gain a head they seem to gain two. I don't understand how they are doing it but it seems like they are watching us." Alice responded.
"Well what about the outcome. It's not necessarily the numbers but the strength of the team." I responded, trying to lighten the view on things.
Alice slid out of focus again and I quickly zoned in on her thoughts watching everything she saw.
All around us were piles of ashes. Here and there I could see remnants of those that had fought on our side. The Volturi was edging ever so closely. Their numbers finally matching ours evenly. This was it. This fight would determine whether or not we had a future at all.
When I came back to my own mind I looked around at the faces that were joined with me and my family. A few of our friends who stood with us last time were surely to be dead if everything went accordingly to Alice's vision.
When my eyes settled on Emmett, Rosalie and the twins I had to turn my head away. Among the fallen were Rosalie and Matthew. That left Penelope in the care of her father.
Closing my eyes I tried to rid my head of the thoughts running through Alice's mind. She kept thinking of the deceased that she saw in her vision.
"Alice stop!" I snapped before heading out of the room.
Leaving the room I made a beeline for the front door. Just as I crossed the threshold a hand caught my arm.
I stopped and turned to face who I knew was my wife behind me.
"Edward?" She called out to me simply. I moved my gaze to meet her eyes. "What is it? What did Alice see?" She asked me.
I shook my head slowly before I nodded towards the forest. "Not here." I said before I took her hand and began running towards the forest.
After we talked it would be a good idea to hunt a bit before we returned home. I had a high tolerance when it came to how long I could go without hunting but it came with its downfalls. Excruciating pain in my throat. I didn't mind it but I didn't want my wife going through that.
When we were several miles into the forest, and I could no longer hear the minds of the crowd back at the house, I knew it was safe to talk without upsetting anyone.
"Alice's visions." Bella said to me again. "What did she see?"
I took in an unneeded breath and held it for a few counts before I released it gently.
Without a word I pulled Bella into my arms and held her tightly. Kissing her on the forehead I moved my lips to her ears. "Rosalie, Matthew, Carmen, Eleazar, Mary, Jennifer-"
Bella shrugged out of my grip and dropped to her knees with her hands pressed to her ears. "Stop, I don't want to hear anymore!" She said to me. "I don't want to know which of my friends and family members are going to die."
I moved to my knees beside my wife and pulled her back into my arms. "I'm sorry love I didn't mean to upset you." I whispered.
When my wife looked into my eyes I saw the same expression that Esme had when she wanted to cry.
"Bella, don't cry." I said as I ran my thumb under her eyes where her tears would form when she was human.
Bella cupped her hand over mine and nuzzled into my palm. "Just tell me what happens to our daughter?"
I looked deep into her eyes for a few moments before I closed them to try and remember what I had seen through Alice's vision.
I saw Rosalie, Matthew, Carmen, Eleazar, Mary, Jennifer, Sam
Quil, Embry and even poor little Seth. Skipping quickly through the faces I settled on one that gave me the answers I needed. Renesmee cowering over a body.
Opening my eyes slowly I saw my wife looking at me, desperately waiting for an answer.
"Renesmee will live." I said simply.
Raising her eyebrow my wife slowly crossed her arms. "What's wrong?" She asked me, pressing for more answers.
I placed my hands in my pockets. "Alot of us are going to die. If the vision stays true then our lives, even after the Volturi are gone, will be permanently affected."
Bella moved gracefully to her feet and we began our walk back towards the house, this time taking our time.
"Do we tell them?" Bella asked me after a few minutes of walking through the forest. "Do we tell them that they are going to die?"
I shook my head. "That wouldn't be the best idea. The chaos would get everyone of us killed."
Bella nodded her head. "We would become easy targets." She mumbled.
Suddenly she stopped. Very slowly Bella turned to look at. "What about us? Do you and I survive?"
Closing my eyes the vision flooded my mind as I let it replay again. Renesmee's screams drew the vision closer and then I saw her cowering over a body. The body belonged to myself only some parts weren't my own. On a detached hand that lay just inches away was the ring that belonged to my wife.
When I opened my eyes again I looked at my wife. "We die." I said truthfully.
Never in my married life would I have wanted to say this. To tell my wife that she and myself wouldn't survive and our daughter would be an orphan. But it was what Alice had seen and Alice's visions were never wrong.
