It's here. Today is the day. I'm finally 18 and I'll be free of my brother soon. I feel bad that I'll be leaving Jenna now that we have started to build a bond but I can't take living with Aaron anymore. I decided that since today is my birthday I'm not going to go to work but instead, I am going to start going through my things and getting rid of stuff I don't need or want anymore. I have to meet the lawyer today at 12 and I am hoping Aaron won't be home when I leave. I'll have to catch the bus to get there because I won't ask Jenna or Caeleb to take me. Jenna would probably tell Aaron and Caeleb is at work. If Caeleb and are both missing from work, Aaron would probably figure out we are together and go after Caeleb again. I can't do that to Caeleb. I got started on going through my things and got rid of a good bit of stuff. I packed up most of the things that I decided to keep and left out a few outfits. It was 11:15 and I had to get down to the bus stop soon. I walked out of my room and thankfully, Aaron wasn't home. I grabbed my purse and headed down to the bus stop. After the bus ride, I walked down the road to the lawyer's office and signed in for my appointment with him. It didn't take long for my name to be called and when I walked into Mr. Thomas' office, he walked around his desk and hugged me. He asked how I'd been and I told him how things had been going since our last meeting after my parents passing. I told him things have been sh*tty. I explained how Aaron has been treating me and how I was happy to be 18 today. He wished me happy birthday and then asked what I needed the meeting for. I told him I wanted to go over my parents will to see what Aaron may have been hiding from me. He pulled out a file from his filing cabinet and began reading the will my parents left. I learned a lot from listening to the lawyer read that will. Aaron has kept money from me that I deserved to get. He was supposed to have already bought me a car with money my parents had set aside for my first car. He also wasn't paying me the set amount my parents stated I was to be paid for working for the family business. I asked the lawyer what I could do to get what belonged to me and he told me he would handle it and call me as soon as he had all of the assets my parents left for me. I thanked him and when I left his office I decided to go grab a bite to eat. After I ate I caught the bus and headed back home. I prayed Aaron wasn't home when I got there because I was so mad at what I found out today that I was afraid I would snap if he was home. When I got to the house I sighed because his truck was in the driveway. I took a deep breath and headed inside. As soon as I walked in the door I hear his annoying voice.
"Skyla? Is that you?"
"Yes."
"Where were you? You weren't at work."
"I know I wasn't at work, Aaron. Why would I be at work today?"
"Uh, let's see. It's a work day. That's why."
"Uh, sorry but I'm not working on my birthday."
"Birthday?"
"Oh, for the love of god. Yes, birthday. Today is my birthday. As my big brother, you should know that."
"Don't give me an attitude, Skyla. It slipped my mind."
"Don't tell me what to do, Aaron. I am not a child anymore."
"Don't start that bullsh*t with me. You still live under my roof, and I'm not going to put up with the attitude."
I didn't give him a chance to say anything else. I walked to my room and closed the door.
