Between Two Mates

Chapter 6

-Rose POV-

Alpha Maximus sighs. “Laura will be here soon.”

We are now in the packhouse, in the Alpha’s office.

(How!? Why? Why is this happening?)

My legs bounce up and down as I sit on a chair and bite my nails while my mother rubs my back, trying to keep me calm. My eyes find the reason for my frustration.

(I want to kill her!)

Harper looks at me with the same thought and then suddenly, we are both out of our chairs and trying to slap each other. We start fighting again. Chairs fly, hair is pulled, and faces are scratched.

“Enough!” Alpha Maximus shouts as he pulls Harper back.

Dad pulls me away but I really don’t want to let her go though I have no choice. We are separated.

“You both need to calm down!” Maximus shouts.

They sit us on opposite ends of the room and I take deep breaths.

(He is mine. Helix was meant to be with me!) That is all that is in my head right now.

“Now, explain.” Maximus says to Helix, calming down.

Everyone goes quiet as Helix tells them what happened at the school and they all process it but Alpha Maximus looks like he is about to get a migraine.

“Okay...” The Alpha starts to say but then stops. “Uhm...” He sighs. “What the hell are we supposed to do with this situation?”

Helix's dad—Lucas— looks at Helix. “Can you choose one of them?”

Helix looks at me. When our eyes meet, my heart beats faster than it has ever done. He then looks at Harper and I want to rip her apart. She was my friend but now, my wolf hates her.

“I... I... I don’t know.” He says with a deflated tone.

That pisses me off. He knows me better and longer than he knows Harper. He always said he wanted me as his mate.

(Why is he doing this?)

“What do you mean you don’t know?!” My dad shouts at Helix.

“Carter, calm down.” Maximus says.

“How can I calm down? He has been chasing my daughter all this time and now he doesn’t want to be with her?!”

Helix looks down with an ashamed expression and I hate it. I want to comfort him so badly.

“It is not that simple.” Maximus says.

“Has this ever happened before?” Mom asks Maximus.

“It has.” Astra—Helix's mom— says.

We all look at her waiting for her to continue.

“It is something that is very rare but it has happened before. There are records of a she-wolf in the early nineteen hundreds finding two mates.”

“What did she do?” Helix asks.

She rolls her eyes at Helix. “She chose one mate. What else?”

“Then Helix has to choose one of them.” Lucas says.

“Easier said than done.” Helix mumbles.

My dad crosses his arms and stands in an intimidating pose. Helix looks at him and then looks at me.

“This is not fair!” Harper shouts. “You can’t pressure him to choose Rose! Just because he knows me less doesn’t mean I am not good for him or that I am not meant to be his mate.”

My mom huffs. “Rose and he have had this connection the longest. You can’t come between them.”

“Mom, Dad, stop.” I say.

My eyes are cast down, feeling sadness but not wanting to let them see it. “This has to be Helix’s choice.”

Suddenly the door opens and Harper’s mom rushes in. A tall, blond lady with brown eyes. She quickly goes to Harper.

“What happened?” She demands.

“My dear, calm down.” Maximus says.

Heather’s mom—soon to be Luna Laura— takes a deep breath. “What is this all about?”

“Helix is my mate.” Harper says.

Before I can stop myself, I speak. “And mine.”

Laura looks at me and then at Harper.

“What are you speaking of?” Laura asks her.

“It would seem they both find themselves mated to the same male wolf.” Maximus says.

“What? How is this possible? I mean... I have heard of this but it is so rare.” Laura says and then looks at Helix. “So, you have to choose?”

Helix slowly nods. He is starting to look stressed and that is super rare. Helix has always been so layback and cheery. He is the jokester, prankster, and life of the party. I have never seen him like this before. It really saddens me.

“And... what is your choice here?” Luna Laura asks.

“He hasn’t made a decision yet.” Astra—Helix's mom—says.

Laura’s jaw muscle twitches as if she was angry. “And why not? The sooner this is done, the better.”

“Laura, this is something that will take time.” Maximus says. “Time? Time to make up his mind of who HE wants and meanwhile, my daughter suffers?” She shakes her head. “No! You can command him as his Alpha to choose a mate.”

“What?” Maximus looks at her wide-eyed.

“Don’t you dare!” Astra says and quickly stands next to Helix.

“Choose?! That is not choosing. That is forcing him!” My mom shouts but then narrows her eyes at Laura. “Oh, but you want it to be your daughter, right?”

The woman in the room look at each other with anger and their mates look at all of them weary as if they are watching that it doesn’t turn into a physical fight.

Mom has never really liked Laura since the Alpha brought her from the neighboring pack and announced that she was going to be our new Luna. I never knew why but my mother has always been good at reading people and she just never liked Laura. I don’t think I like her either now.

“Of course, I want it to be my daughter and it should be my daughter. She is Alpha and so is her. It is a perfect match.” Laura says.

My mom scuffs. “I always knew you had a hidden agenda. You want your daughter to be mated to an Alpha and to somehow make her Luna!”

“That is stretching it sweetie.” Dad says trying to calm mom down.

Laura rolls her eyes. “You don’t know what you are talking about but either way, my daughter is his perfect match.”

“So is my daughter. They are close and know each other for a while now.”

“Ladies, that’s enough.” Alpha Maximus says. “I will not be using Alpha command on anyone. Helix needs to figure this out on his own.”

Laura looks at Maximus and suddenly, her face of anger turns into one with a big smile. As if a switch has been turned. Her personality did a one-eighty.

“You are right, dear. We should not intervene. Let them... figure it all out by themselves.”

“Exactly.” Maximus says. “Let's visit all of this tomorrow. I think the three of them need a good rest right now.”

Laura pats the wrinkles out of her clothes and looks at Harper. “I know this must all be draining for you sweetheart. Let’s get you to your room.”

Harper nods and gets up.

“I want everyone back here early morning.” Alpha Maximus says.

We all nod. This is all good but how am I going to be able to sleep? To relax?

I look at Helix and when he looks at me, his eyes cast down, looking sad.

All I think about now is him. All I want to do is run to him. Find him and keep him near. And when I think about Harper, I want to find her and rip her heart out. How am I or any of us going to be able to relax?

As if she can read my mind, mom taps my shoulder. “I’ll run you a hot bath. We’ll figure it out.” She gives me a warm smile and I return it.

I know how lucky I am to have such loving parents.

-Harper POV-

“Come on sweetie.” Mom says.

I walk next to her and start going up the stairs.

Tears start to prickle my eyes. Knowing how much Helix has always wanted Rose makes my heartache.

“He will be your mate Harper.” Mom says in a low voice. “You are the one that is meant for him. I won’t have it any other way.”

I look up at her. She gives me a reassuring smile and that makes me relax. Mom is the type of person that she gets what she wants no matter what.

(Good.)

I always liked Helix. I always felt that attraction for him but Rose was always there. It was always all about her. I had to suffer in silence pretending to not want him. I tried to be Rose’s friend. I really did and I know we were friends but not anymore. I choose him over her.

(I want my mate. Helix is mine.)

I can’t deny that it still makes me sad. Rose and I had such genuine good times together.

(This... is not fair.)

“Seduce him.” Mom suddenly says.

“What?”

“Seduce him. He’ll go crazy about you and choose you.”

“Mom, it can’t be that simple.”

“Try it. You’ll never know until you try it.”

I stare at her as we walk. I know it can’t be as simple as batting my eyes at him and wearing something sexy.

She has a small tiny smile on her lips and her face is relaxed. I know exactly what that means. She gets that expression when she knows she will win.

As I said, she always gets what she wants.
