Between Two Mates

Chapter 4

-Helix POV-

“Looks good.” I say to Nova.

“Yea! No thanks to you!”

She flips her hair at me that now looks professionally done. It still has pink on the bottom ends, like an ombre effect but it looks good.

“Excuse me, but it WAS all thanks to me.” I put my hand on her hair and mess it up.

“Stop.” She narrows her eyes at me and huffs. “You are a grade-A asshole!”

I give her a cheeky smile. “Learned from the best.”

I really did. Nova was a wild child and behind our parent's back, she did anything and everything she wanted. Even things that weren't always legal. Now she is a bit calmer but she still has that wild side.

Nova stares me down and lifts her hand in a fist while I flinch, ready for the punch.

Dominic quickly holds her arm and sighs, then looks at me. “Happy birthday.” He says and pulls Nova away.

I give him a salute as thanks. I look around at my party. The pack owns houses near the pack and a few of them are vacant. With the permission of the Alpha, we get to have parties in them because we can’t have parties in the packhouse since some of our guests tend to be human.

“Hey Helix. Happy birthday.”

I look to my side and see Tory.

I give her a big smile. “Hey beautiful.”

She giggles.

I know I shouldn’t be flirting like this. It has gotten me in trouble before but I can’t help it. I’m a flirt.

Goddess help me with whoever my mate is. I better learn not to step out of line when I have my mate or I’ll end up dead. Female werewolves are not known for their forgiveness.

“So, I wanted to give you your present.” She says.

“Oh. What is it?”

She smiles and takes my hand. She starts leading me through the hall in the direction of the bedrooms.

I sigh and slowly, pull her to a stop. “What are you doing, Tory?”

“I... giving you your birthday present.”

“And what is it?” I ask.

“Well... it’s more of a “show you” kind of situation.”

I smile. “How about we just go dance.”

“Dance?”

“Yea. Come on.” I take her by the hand and pull her to the living room and towards the middle where other people are dancing.

It’s not that I wasn't intrigued by what she was suggesting, I am attracted to the girl but I want to wait until my birthday because if my mate is Rose, Tory, or someone else I know, I don’t want to f**k things up.”

Tory is confused but we start dancing and soon she is forgetting about this “present” she was going to give me.

I spend a good amount of time with her until I see Cooper, Rose, and Harper arrive.

I leave a pouting Tory and I walk over to them.

“Hey man. Seems you’re having a good time.”

I nod. “Yea. I am.”

“Happy birthday Helix!” Harper says with a cheer.

I give her a big smile. “Thanks.”

Harper is a cute girl and I have always gotten along with her well.

“Happy birthday.” Rose says.

(My main lady.)

“Thank you.” I say, also with a big smile. I can’t help but stare at her and how beautiful she looks.

She has long chocolate straight hair and beautiful brown eyes.

She comes closer and gives me a kiss on the cheek. I wasn’t expecting that. I can feel my face heat up and the three of them start laughing.

I have always been the one who would flirt with her and make moves on her. In the beginning, she would brush me off but when she turned eighteen, it all changed. The minute she saw me, she started acting different and would flirt back. When she does that, I get embarrassed. I don’t know why I get like that with her because I can flirt with other girls just fine.

Harvey and Gabriel suddenly walk in with stacks of beer over their shoulder.

“Yes! Just what we needed!” Nova says and we all cheer.

“Woot Woot! You know what time it is!” Harvey cheers.

We all laugh.

“And what time is that!?” Harper shouts, playing along.

He smiles. “Time to-” He stops as he looks into the distant crowd. “What the f**k!”

We all look back and see his little brother, Dylan, again dancing with older girls.

Dylan sees Harvey and waves at him with a cheeky smile.

“How!? I checked my trunk this time!”

Dylan continues to smile. “Doesn’t mean your friends did.”

Harvey pushes the stack of beers towards Dominic who quickly grabs them and then he rushes towards Dylan.

“Not today you little turd!” He shouts but Dylan is fast.

He runs and goes in between the crowd. Harvey quickly loses him.

“Uuhh!” He grunts, frustrated.

“That kid has game.” Gabriel mumbles.

I nod, agreeing.

The party continues on. I occasionally see Harvey chasing after his little brother but he is never really quite able to catch him.

Feeling like I need a break, I walk into the hall and head to one of the bedrooms. This night seems to want to take a turn for the worse because the moment I open the door, I am met with a half-naked Nova and Dominic getting it on.

“f**k!” I shout covering my eyes.

Nova gasps and quickly covers her-self

“What the f**k Helix!” Dominic shouts.

“The f*****g door has a lock you know!”

Nova groans.

“You know what, you won.” I say. “You got me good with this one because I will never be able to get this disgusting image out of my head. I am now scarred for life.”

“Ha! Then it was worth it. Score one for me b***h! Now get OUT!”

I groan and walk out, then walk to a corner and softly hit my forehead on the wall.

I hear Cooper laughing behind me. “What the hell happened?”

I grunt again. “Just saw something horrible. My sister... and her mate.”

Now he full-on laughs.

“Not funny.”

“Yea, it kind of is.”

I turn around and lean on the wall, glancing around the party.

“So... in just two more days you’ll get to know.” Cooper says.

I nod. “Yea. You know, I have been waiting for this for years. Obviously, it is in our nature. But I have to be honest. I’m a bit nervous.”

“Understandable. I was nervous too when I turned eighteen a month ago, but it was for nothing. I haven't found my mate yet.” He looks into the crowd. “Kind of annoying that one of these beautiful girls is not my mate. Tory, Harper, Rose... hell, even your sister Nova.”

I grunt, remembering what I just witnessed.

He laughs and then puts a hand on my shoulder. “Well, you have girls fighting for you already. Good luck.”

“Fighting for me?” I ask confused.

If he is talking about those girls that got into a fight a couple of months ago, that was resolved. I learned my lesson and that is why I have toned it down with the flirting.

Cooper nods with a smile and points to where Rose and Tory are arguing in the distance.

With a sigh, I start walking in their direction to help defuse the situation. When they calm down, the night continues and the rest of the night goes well.

It is now Monday and I arrive at school. I always come late but today was an exception. I am excited but I am also nervous. I want to find my mate but I am scared. This is a big life-changing moment for a werewolf.

I walk in the direction of the school. I go in but nothing hits me yet, that is until I start to walk through the halls of the school. My eyes go wide as a mixed scent reaches my nose. I walk fast trying to catch up to it but I am also confused. There are two strong scents. I now nearly run desperately, trying to find the source.

I stop when I see Rose.

(I knew it! I always knew she was my mate.)

I smile but something isn't right. I want to run to her but I have to stop myself.

Wide-eyed, she looks at me.

“Mine”

“Mine”

She says and we both look at the girl next to her who said the exact same thing.

(This can’t be!)

They look at each other ready to kill one another.

(Two?! Oh... f**k me.)

I look at Rose and then... at Harper.
