Mate

“Red dress, blue heels and blue eyes. Everyone else leave, I have no need for you.” Ohh… It’s just as I thought… He’s as shitty as hell! First, he invaded my personal space then proceeded to kick us out, that isn’t any way to treat his guests…especially after he just declared to have found his mate among us vampires! But is he even telling the truth though? There isn’t any reason for him to lie but it’s still surprising and unsettling to hear it from his mouth. A vampire as his mate and he isn’t even angry about it? Who is this mate of his exactly? Red dress, blue eyes…is that what he said? Whispers descended over the crowd, and all the women began to look around like crazy. Even as they shuffled out of the palace, they still persisted to glance back inside, which even led to some of them tripping over their own feet. I was no different, though I wasn’t one of the clumsy ones. I too want to see whosoever that person is, but the problem is, the hard stare still attached to my figure was making me immensely uncomfortable. Why does he keep staring?! I should leave from here before I get too unnecessarily flustered. I’ll get another chance to see the mate some other time anyway. With that in mind, I turned towards the palace doors and stepped off, moving on hurried feet as if the ground was on fire. I scurried past a few ladies who looked over at me for a good few seconds before shaking their heads in distaste and shifting their eyes to search elsewhere. I didn’t pay them much mind. For Christ sake, I want to breath, and I won’t be able to until I leave this place! Biting my lip in irritation, I lowered my head once again and fastened my movements. I’ll get out of here as quickly as I can, then wait a little distance up ahead for Stacy to catch up, hopefully she doesn’t leave before I do. “Liv…” The sound of my name had me snapping my head up, surprised. I'm sure the voice belonged to Stacy so I surveyed the crowd in search of her and thankfully spotted her standing just outside the open doors. She just stood there like an unmoving statue as she stared back at me. Is she waiting for me? Good, I’ll leave straight away! I sent her a small smile, but the gesture was returned with widened eyes and slack jaws. What’s wrong with her? Frowning, I hurried over to her and just as I was about to grab her by the arm, fingers came out of nowhere and grasped my shoulder. Tingles instantly sprouted on my skin. I stiffened in place. I already had a good idea who it was without even turning around… The Prince, is it? Of all people, why must he touch me?! These hands of his, how many of our people have they killed?! “Are you already rejecting me, mate? I would’ve never imagined.” His words came with a deep, melodious chuckle. My stomach dropped. M-Mate? By now all the women who were in the hall were now standing outside, all eyes trained on me, including Stacy. Which meant, there was no one else he could’ve been talking to except for me. Realization hit me in that moment. Red dress, blue heels, blue eyes… I no doubt fit those descriptions! Jolting, I quickly shrugged his hand off me and spun around, alert eyes looking up at the tower that loomed over me. My heart thumped hard against my chest. He was tall and intimidating and even though there was a grin on his face, I didn’t deem it friendly at all. I never came here hoping that I was the one who’d be his mate, and yet...why… “Mate?” I took a step back, only for him to take one forward. “Red dress, blue heels, blue eyes. Is that not you or am I blind?” I took another step back, and again, he took one forward. “But mate…” He continued, his eyes leaving my face to look me up and down. Then in seconds, he mirrored that same displeasure the women had displayed toward me. “You seem a bit far off from my taste. Did the goddess do me dirty after all I’ve done for my people?” As soon as his words met my ears, I found myself hugging my chest on instinct. He looked extremely disappointed, and he didn’t even try to hide it. I on the other hand was utterly taken aback by this whole situation all together. I only came here thinking that I’d get to see if anyone would make history by being the Prince’s mate, but it turns out…I’m that very person? Just the thought was unbelievable, absurd! How can I be his mate? Is there not a standard for who gets to be destined with him? I barely have a family or a job, my mother has been sick for ages and the only friend I have is Stacy. I don’t have any money stashed away either and I’m not even half as pretty as most of the women here, even the prince himself said I am far from his taste… so why…why must I be his mate? My hope when I heard a vampire could be his mate, was for the world to change and for us to be left to ourselves instead of killed in the crossfire or forced to fight in a war we didn’t even belong. With this turn of events, the expectations that I had for the woman who’d be his mate, do all these women also hold such expectations of me? Deep down, are they hoping I’d bring them out of this misery? “Close the doors.” The prince’s voice brought me out of my thoughts and back to reality. I heard the double doors behind me creak loudly, sliding close. But even as my only escape was shut off, I didn’t turn to look. If I am truly his mate like he claimed, then this is supposed to be my chance…isn’t it? “Am I…” I swallowed the lump in my throat, “Am I your soulmate?” His grin widened as if the question amused him, “It looks like you’re not too happy about it. But no matter, whether you want to or not, this palace will now be your prison. Anyone you’ve been in contact with up until now consider them dead because you will never be seeing them again. From this moment on, you won’t be seen as the no-name vampire that you are, but as the mate of the future king.” My stomach twisted. W-what? “What are yo—” A snap of his fingers cut off my words and in the matter of a split second, hands suddenly grabbed me from both sides. The fact that I didn’t even hear them approaching was reason enough to not try and break out of their hold. The attempt would certainly have been in vain considering the strength. It was as if they wanted to break my arms! “Shower, clothes, hair…everything. Tell the maids she needs a complete makeover.” HUH?! “Understood, Alpha.” I didn’t even get to question his words before I was pulled like an animal to god knows where, then tossed into the hands of maids who didn’t leave a single portion of my body untouched…
