The New Year

Chapter 37 - Present - Giselle The holidays quietly passed by without anything out of the ordinary happening again, as if things went back to usual. Words concerning Edward were the only ones exchanged between Aaron and Giselle once more as they put an ever further distance between themselves without anyone even noticing as the two of them had never been on the same page before. ... If the man said let's go, the she-wolf would say wait. If he wanted pink, she would say white, and that was how their days had always been since they first met... So, how could careless eyes notice the inevitable? Aaron had been hanging out with his friends, even more, these last couple of weeks, despite Alpha Dylan's warnings to everyone to be careful about where they went or talked to as the threat of hunters was still out there. ... They could have left the Mirror Night's lands without even noticing the small Pack, but the uncertainties about it gave no room for the carelessness of their part. That way, their leaders and the other dominant wolves kept a state of extreme alert, always reminding everyone to be cautious, even if the danger might have already passed... The younger ones kept the same routine whenever possible in the midst of their Human lives, adapting their schedules so that at least two future Alphas and a Dominant Wolf would always be with the warriors on their rounds. … Which helped the growing distance between Aaron and Giselle even more, as if the couple wasn't already putting their own efforts into that. * * * Having trouble catching up with my breath, I could feel my heart beating fast in my chest as I was more tired than usual after the rounds through the Pack's lands. And the worst thing was that I wasn't even back after stopping at Mirror Night Lake to drink some water, somehow turning into my Human form without noticing, as if I had no control over my own body. "... Elle... Are you okay?" Paola's voice asked in my mind shyly before I was aware of her wolf with dark fur, just like hair approaching me. "Yes... I am. Just a little tired, nothing to worry about." Figuring out that maybe I was reaching my limit with all the worries and extra shifts in the Pack during the past few weeks, I answered her without thinking too much about that. "Are you sure? I can give you a ride back or call someone if you want." However, she clearly didn't buy my words, going on with her concern while sitting next to me at the lake. "Yes, I do. It's just normal fatigue, proof that I'm no longer young like you or other wolves." Perhaps if I were Human, that would make sense, yet for a Werewolf who could live for hundreds of years, this was merely an excuse to stop her from talking any longer about it. "... Okay, then. But at least, let me go back with you, or I'll ask the Alphas not to let you come with us tomorrow." While leaving no room for argument, it was hard to think she was just a teenager when she knew how to state her opinion so well. So with no other choice, I agreed with her, turning into my wolf one more time before following Paola back to the Pack's house... ... Which was relatively far from there, but not enough to get me tired as I was on that day, making more than need another little break before going home... Unaware of all the signs of changes the New Year brought with it.
