Chapter Six

Mongoose

Wolfy woke up this morning on a mission. She was determined to get photos of the faces on the rocks by the falls. Heading out the door with her camera, she didn't even stop for breakfast.

"Wolfy, where are you off to? Girl, slow down and eat some breakfast. " her mother yells at her as she scoots right by. "I tell you I need two of me to keep up with that child."Dove talks to herself and shakes her head.

"Did you say something dear?" RB says, walking in the back door.

"No, I am talking to myself. Wolfy went flying out the door with her camera. She didn't even stop to eat. What are we going to do with her?" Dove wipes her hands and gets RB his breakfast.

Walking through the woods to the falls, Wolfy takes photos of the trees and flowers that line the path to the falls. The animals running around her stop and pose like they know she's taking their picture. Arriving at the falls She plays in the water. It's so crystal clear that you can see all the way to the bottom of the creek that flows from it. Touching the rocks, she feels a chill go through her. The wind picks up, and she can hear the howling of the wolves in it. Taking photos of the rocks, she can see clearly the faces that appear. On one rock, she sees a heart shape and stars around it. They say it's the heart of the two lovers shing in the stars from the Great Spirit. Wolfy is so involved in taking the photos that she never noticed someone was watching her.

Walking softly so as not to make any noise, he sneaks up behind her. Touching her shoulder, he speaks to her.

"Hello, I didn't mean to scare you. What are you looking at?" Mongoose asked.

"These rocks have the faces of the warriors and the special child who was a blessed shape shifter. The legend says she could change into many animals and died to join her true love. My friends and I are doing a school project on it. "Wolfy answers him.

"I have heard that story. Do you believe it's true. It seems very fake to me."

"My people believe in it. Our tribal village is named after the falls. I don't think I have ever seen you around here before. Where are you from?" Wolfy asked, backing away from him.

"My name is Mongoose, and I am from over the mountain. I came to see why our tribe keeps coming here. My father is the chief, and he forbids me from coming here. But I just had to see this place. They say a special child lives here."He reached out to shake her hand.

Wolfy shakes his hand, and a strange feeling comes over her. She sits down on the rock and is feeling dazzed.

"It's true, she is the special child. My father was right. I can't let her know she is why I came here. The spirits told me of her and how she must become my mate. I will see you again soon."Mongoose thoughts race through his mind. Turning, he disappeared into the mist of the trees.

"Where did he go so quickly?"Wolfy spoke out loud. Hearing a voice behind her say."He is like the mist that covers the ground. This also covers his true colors." When Wolfy looked up to see who was talking there, stood mother wolf from the den. Nugging Wolfy to stand up, Mother Wolf sniffed her face and bowed. Retreating back into the woods, Mother Wolf left as fast as she appeared. Wolfy watched her till she couldn't see her anymore. Still feeling dazzed, Wolfy makes her way home.

"Mother, I have to tell you what happened at the falls. I was taking pictures of the rocks when a young boy appeared. He was so quiet that I had never heard him. We talked for a little while, and he said his name was Mongoose from over the mountain.When he shook my hand, it made me dizzy, and I had to sit down. But then the mother wolf appeared and Mongoose disappeared. It was very strange. "Wolfy was telling her mother when her father came in.

"That boy is the chiefs son. He is the one who wants you as a mate. That is why we are joining the moon village. He is trouble, so don't speak to him again. From here until we move, you are not allowed to venture off on your own."RB tells her

"But father, he didn't. " RB interrupted his daughter."You heard what I said, young lady. That's final."

Stomping up the steps, Wolfy looks at the photos she had taken that morning. Behind Mongooses' image was a large dark shadow that blocked several of the trees."That's odd, I didn't see that shadow when I was taking the photo. Must be a cloud passed over."Wolfy thought to herself. Laying the photos out, she saw the faces on the rocks clearly and the heart on the big rock.She was very pleased with her work, so she called Fawn to tell her about her morning.

At the village over the mountain, Mongoose sits and talks to his father. "I went to the falls this morning. Yes, I know you forbid me from there, but I had to go. I met Little Wolf, the chosen child. She is as beautiful as they saw. I could feel her powers and her innocent heart. She will be a perfect mate for me. One thing that I wasn't sure of was the big wolf that seemed to protect her. When it arrived, I felt my spirit telling me to leave. Is that going to be a problem when she becomes mine?" Mongoose asked

"No, we will have to keep it from Little Wolf when we take her. That wolf is her earthly protector. Be careful of her because she can cause you much harm, my son. Now don't ever go there alone again. We must not cause a disturbance in the line up of the spirits leading us." the chief tells his son.

At Misty Falls village, RB is quite disturbed over what happened this morning. Meeting up with the chief, he tells him of the incident.

"This is not good.Now he has seen her and senced her powers. Her scent will linger with him, and he will be able to find her anytime he wants. We must be careful not to scare our young ladies coming of age, so tell our warriors not to be obvious but be protective. " The chief tells RB.

Gathering the fighting warriors, RB instructs them on what the chiefs' orders are. Appointing lookout post RB makes sure everyone knows what the plan is. " No one is to get past the lookout points. We will have other warriors on standby if they are needed. Be on guard because the mist is heavy tonight. It will make a great cover over the ground and make it hard to see the enemies coming."

The warriors take their positions and watch with the eyes of their spirit animal. The night seems long, and the mist is very heavy lingering above the ground. The wind carries the howls of the wolf pack, and the strong older wolves show themselves to the warriors. Making it known that they are there to help if any problems should arise.

RB mind links Dove asking how Wolfy is. He knows of her restlessness in her body and mind. Her powers grow stronger with each passing day, and soon, the coming of age dance will take place.

Dove mind links RB back.'She is sleeping but talking a lot in her sleep.Her scent of wild flowers grows strong tonight. The owl sits just outside her window as if he's watching over her. The branch from the willow tree lays across her sky window, covering it completely. The earth has spoken, and the great spirit has a watchful eye on her.' This put RB at ease.

Mongoose sits up on his bed. The fresh scent of wild flowers fills his nose. He can sense her, and it makes him want her even more. Laying back down, he closes his eyes and dreams of her.

Standing Wolf feels uneasy. His wolf growls within him. 'She is in danger, and soon you will know who she is.Beware for many seek her.' his wolf tells him.
