Chapter Six
Light slowly flooded into the room as the sun slowly rose in the distance. Yawning, I stretched out across the bed, feeling the soft fur brush against my skin. It was hard to sleep the night before as my mind couldn’t settle down. Ronan understood, at least a little, where I was coming from, so at least he was at bay for now. I couldn’t imagine giving up my first time to someone I don’t even know, but on the other hand, he was everything and more that I dreamed of. It was like he was sculpted by the gods them-self.
Feeling the heat rush to my cheeks at the thought of us sharing a bed, I quickly pulled myself together. This was not the time to think like that. I had a lot to figure out. In most of the stories I read online as a teenager, the Luna’s always had a lot of responsibility. Some took care of their people's needs, others just threw grand parties and mingled, forming connections with others, Luna’s and Alpha’s. Feeling determined to aid my pack, I threw the covers off, grabbed the clothes I wore the day before and threw them back on. I would have to acquire about my belongings back in the human world. Trudy told me they would bring them with her if I chose to stay the next time they came out. I regret that choice now, feeling a bit filthy in my current state.
Walking out the bedroom and down the hall, a low rumble rolled through the hall. I froze in spot, until I heard it again. It almost sounded like snoring. Confused, I followed the sound out toward the entrance way. Opening the fabric door that hung in the way, I took a quick glance around the kitchen, only to have my eyes fall on Ronan, fast asleep on the fur couch. He was so massive that it looked very uncomfortable. His torso fully exposed, his chest rising and falling with each breath he took, his lightly tanned skin seemed to almost sparkle in the dimly lit room. One of his legs laid firmly on the couch while the other was firmly on the floor, probing him up so he wouldn’t slide off. Thank the goddess that thought to ware some tan coloured pants to sleep.
As I took this peaceful image in, I hardly took notice when the low rumble that was his snoring stopped. Startled, his blue eyes lingered over me, his Alpha aura filling the space between us, as he curled his lips up in a smirk.
“All this can be yours.” He mocked as he waved a hand down the length of his body. My mouth hung open in shock as I felt my blood begin to boil, and heat rise to the forefront of my cheeks.
Trying to form words felt impossible. Instead, I furrowed my eyebrows and quickly turned on my heals, throwing the fabric curtain in my wake. I could hear the echoes of my feet slapping against the smooth stone floors as I made my way back into the bedroom. His deep laugher followed closely behind.
Huffing, I folded my arms over my chest and sat on the bed. He did catch me in the act of staring at him, but did he have to be so.. So… So forward!
I felt his gaze idle on my back as he entered the bedroom but kept his distance, lingering by the door. “Hey, you don’t have to be so angry with me.” He laughed. I chose not to respond, feeling too flustered.
Sighing, he took another approach. “Those clothes you had on yesterday, if you follow me I can get something clean for you.”
Yes, that would be great, is what I wanted to say, but I still couldn’t make my tongue move to form words. I stood, still folding my arms over my chest and looked towards him. Smiling, he put his hands up in defense. “I won’t try anything, promise.” His too innocent of a smirk made me feel like he was lying, but the need to get new clothes persuaded me to believe him.
“F-Fine.” I stumbled out, unfolding my arms, following him out of the room into another one close by. This room felt bigger then the last, with wall to wall shelves and hangers just like in the world I was from. A massive walk-in closet filled to the brim with clothes of all shapes and sizes.
“Tarlo arrived early to prepare these for you.” Ronan gestured to the left of the room. I gawked at all the clothes that lined my side. A mixture between primitive clothing, like tunics and robes, as well as modern stuff and even a few luxury dresses.
“Is-is this all for me?” I asked as I took in my side.
Ronan let out a chuckle as he replied, “Yes, this is your side, this is mine.” He gestured to his. Wait? His side?
Turning to face him now, I couldn’t help but question him. “Your side? We haven’t mar-….” I let the words trail off as his smile disappeared instantly. He didn’t like to be reminded.
“This is my den, of course my things will be here.” He snapped at me. I paused a brief moment to take in his words. I was in his home… which means I have been… It hits me like a ton of bricks.
“Th-then, that’s.” I pointed towards the bedroom where his grin appeared once more. “My bed.” He finished my sentence. Shock clearly plastered over my face at this realization. Ronan’s smirk grew as he moved back out of the space.
“This way to the baths.” He directed my way. A bath or even a shower would feel fantastic right about now! Pushing the current conversation we just had, to the back of my mind for later, I excitedly followed him into the next room.
The sound of running water echoed off the walls of the hall as Ronan held the door open for me. Swiftly walking inside, I took in my surroundings. We stood on a wooden platform, higher than the stone floor. Stairs led down all three sides.
“Sometimes in the spring this room floods, so this is to protect the rest of our den.” Ronan said as he stepped onto the wooden platform from the door. “Over there is where the warm water comes from,” He pointed to the right where a small wooden pipe ran water into a small pool. “And over there is the cold water. Both from natural springs. And drinkable.”
I watched as he walked down the steps, moving towards the hot water. The pool below was big enough to fit about three people comfortably. The cold water spring also ran into the pool, most likely making the temperature perfect.
“You can also exchange these”, he pointed at the wooded piping and one that was shorter on the ground, “And fill up buckets to fill this big barrel, if you find this temperature too hot still.” He pointed to my right, where a huge half barrel tub sat. The rest of the room was made out of a harder, darker rock than the rest of the den. It was as if this room was carved by hand.
“The rest of the pack has the bathhouse which you can also use. This is just a newly added addition that I have been working on for awhile.” He smiled, seemingly a little proud of his work. It for sure could use some sprucing up, and maybe a candle or two for relaxation, but it wasn’t half bad.
“Wow! You did this all yourself?” I asked as I made my way down the steps and over to the pool of water where he stood.
“Well, Kai and Tarlo chipped in a bit. But yea, mostly me.” A bright smile now graced his perfect face. “Come feel the water, is it to your liking?” He asked, bending down, feeling the water himself. I followed his lead and slipped my hand in. It was a little on the hot side, but overall it felt great already. I couldn’t wait to get in!
“It's great!” I smiled towards him, letting the excitement show in my voice.
“Okay! I’ll leave you to it. There should be fresh towels where your clothes are too. Pick out something nice. You will be meeting the Elders today.” He said as he stood, shaking the access water off his hand, moving towards the door.
Stripping down to nothing, I made quick work of the bath and slipped right in without any hesitation. The bath melted all the stress away and was exactly what I needed. If I wasn’t so determined to fit the Luna role and figure out what I needed to do, I would never have came out.
What really slowed me down was the clothes. It was hard to decide what to wear to meet the elders. I stood there looking at all the potential outfits for what felt like hours. I finally settled on a robe that looked like a Greek Goddess herself wore. The bottom dyed a light blue and slowly faded to white, the top fit around my waste and bust nicely, giving me shape and showing off a very mild amount of cleavage. A golden rope was strung around my waste a few times before I tied it into a loose bow and called it a day. Overall, I think I looked the Luna part, or at least I hopped so.
I quickly brushed my hair and left it down, not overly sure how to style it without a mirror. I quickly walked out into the kitchen where Ronan had been waiting for me.
I watched as he looked up from where he sat, not saying anything. He didn’t seem pleased with what I had picked out. I thought it was rather tame compared to some of the other things hung in that room. I gave him a little twirl and a smile. “What do you think?”
His eyes lingered on me for awhile without saying anything.
“Is it too much?” I asked, looking down, fanning the skirt out to fully inspect it.
“No it’s fine.” He grumbled as he got to his feet, clearing his throat. “We should get going.”
“Right.” I felt a renewed wave of determination hit me as I was ready to face the pack as their Luna, and figure this all out. I hoped I could be as good as my mother. I wonder what type of Luna she had been.
Practically light jogging to keep up with Ronan, who seemed to be walking as fast as he could without himself breaking into a jog, made quick work getting to the center of the village.
Laid out in front of us were tables scattered around with no real layout, and what looked to be everyone's eyes on us. A small stage platform held one long table. Amelia, Kai and Tarlo all sitting there with a few empty seats. Amelia saw me and quickly smiled, waving me over and patting one of the empty seats beside her.
Before I could greet Amelia and begin walking in her direction, Ronan quickly laced his fingers with mine, walking much slower over to his sister and his beta’s. I felt the eyes of the entire pack follow us as we made our way through the sea of tables, and people to our seats. It was so quiet that you could hear the water boiling, and the fire crackling from the nearby outdoor kitchen.
Finally making it to the stage platform where one long table sat before us, Ronan pulled out the chair seated next to Amelia and gestured for me to sit, which I did quickly. I wanted nothing more than to shrink into the chair and escape the stares the pack threw my way. I knew that I shouldn’t look weak. Most of the stories I read before, the Luna was their source of pride, their anchor for holding down the runaway ship. I held my head high, put on the bravest face I could muster and stared ahead at a stone in the back. I did nothing but focus on this stone with everything I had. This way, at least, it looked like I had some type of purpose. Maybe I looked dignified to them? Maybe just maybe I looked like a worthy Luna.
Ronan sat next to me, letting out a soft growl. Everyone quickly went back to their business but some still lingered on me.
“Normally, if the weather is nice, we all like to gather here and eat our meals,” Amelia explained as she waved some girls over. They excitedly hurried over with plates of food, and offered each of us one. It looked to be like porridge but the colour was a soft pink.
Once we had been served, others stood and formed a line to get theirs next, while some of the girls seemed to be serving some of the other bigger men and their families that sat closest to us.
“After the Alpha’s and Beta’s are served, the Gamma’s wait in line. Then once they have theirs, it's the Omega’s.” She explained once more. I was beginning to really like Amelia, she really took it upon herself to help me, and I really appreciated it. I returned her kindness with a small smile and I mouthed 'thank you'. I really didn’t know all this and I knew her information would be needed in the future.
Ronan didn’t pay much attention to Amelia and I as we chatted and ate our morning meal. The porridge was amazing, it was just like back home but with a little more of a fruity cream taste to it. It seemed to be a group favorite and most cleaned their plates.
“I like doing this.” I told Amelia, “Its nice to be apart of something so refreshing.” I smiled at her as I spoke about eating as a group outside. The summer air was still cool, and the sun lifted everyone's moods. It seemed those in earshot approved of this as smiles spread across the pack.
“Is this everyone in the pack?” I asked, looking at the numbers. It seemed pretty small if I was honest. Amelia nodded, “There are a few exceptions, like those in the medical den, some elders, and, of course, those out on patrol. But this is us.” She smiled proudly.
“We may be a smaller pack, but we do have the best warriors!” One of the men sitting close to the stage voiced as he stood up and flexed, causing laughter to erupt within the crowd. I looked his way and was about to smile and laugh along with them when Amelia grabbed my knee from under the table and shook her head.
“You can’t give them any attention. Or they may think they have a right to you.” Amelia’s voice rang in my mind. I quickly wiped my face of all emotion and looked down at my empty bowl.
“Oh, I didn’t realize.” I mind-link back, feeling off about the situation.
“Until you have mated and marked Ronan, you can’t entertain any male. You have to ignore them, they will try to bid for your attention.” She explained.
“What if I make a mistake?” I asked, looking towards her, still in our mind-link.
“Ronan will have to fight them as they are challenging his authority as Alpha.” She looked to me to make sure I understood the seriousness of the situation. I nodded as Ronan stood. Glaring at the beta, he let a warning growl out and the man laughed again. Refusing to look in his direction, I stared at my bowl. Was Ronan about to fight this man already?
Ronan let out one final growl and the man quickly gave up. “I’m not looking for a fight Ronan, Sorry.” He submitted as he sat back in his chair. Turning away to chat with his table-mates.
Ronan sat back down, however his Alpha Aura still surged from him, making the closest beta’s straighten in their chairs.
“You did great. Its over.” Amelia squeezed my hand. I hadn’t realized I was holding my breath that whole time. I let out a big sigh of relief, catching Ronan’s attention for the first time that morning. He looked at me out of the corner of his eye, still seething.
I sat quietly for the rest of the meal, day one and I had already messed up. All the morning's determination seemed to have been lost. I felt more lousier then ever.
“Time to go.” Ronan’s deep voice brought me back out of my misery for a moment. His Alpha Aura still drowning me in every way. It felt suffocating to say the least.
“I’ll catch up later! I have that thing to plan!” Amelia smiled as she pushed her chair in, leaving me alone with Ronan.
“It’s time to see the Elders, I’m sure they have a lot to teach you today.” He almost snapped towards me. I could tell he was holding back.
I quickly followed after him as he led me through the village once more to the edge of the wall where there was another den like home, this one had a much bigger door, carved with wolves and trees. It was stunning, to say the least.
“This is where the elders live, they are expecting you.” He said as he stood awkwardly by the door.
“Okay thank you… Sor-“ I was about to apologize to him again but he stopped me.
“Just go in.” He huffed, rubbing his forehead. “Someone will escort you back to the den later,” And with that he walked off the way we had come. I felt like a burden. Was I really messing things up this badly? Sighing, I tried to clear my mind. I turned back to the door in front of me, building up the courage to enter. If anyone could help me, I’m sure it would be the Elders.
