Chapter Seven

Chapter Seven Knocking lightly, while opening the door I took in my surroundings. Chairs scattered the room, with sofas and arm chairs. Along the wall to the left was what looked to be a kitchen with a wood stove, as well as dining room seating. A elder lady with long wild silver hair greeted me with a smile. She gestured to one of the many couches in the room. “Take a seat and we will get started!” She smiled while turning back to what she was doing. I took a seat on a fur couch much like the one in the den I was staying in. In front of the couch was a wooden coffee table shaped like a tree. The base was big, but small branches reached up and held the flat wooden top together. “It will just be me today,” She called over her shoulder. “Harold is out, doing goddess knows what.” She laughed as she made her way over to where I was sitting with a tray filled with cookies and a tea set. I couldn’t help but smile as it seemed not much was different from here to where I grew up. “I am Norma,” She greeted me, smiling as she sat down. “The Luna among the elders.” She added while handing me a small tea cup filled with a clear pink liquid. “N-nice to meet you, I’m Melody!” I took a sip of the tea. It was still super hot, but the small sip tasted like a raspberry rose tea from home. “Amelia stopped by yesterday and informed me that you may need to ask some questions.” She sat back, crossing her legs looking at me very intently. “Oh, uh.. Yes. I’m not sure where to begin.” I nervously laughed while taking another sip. Norma reminded me of a natural path that I met once in the modern world. She carried a very freeing aura about her that hung in the air. “Why don’t we start with Ronan.” The smile she carried completely disappeared at the mention of his name. I felt myself getting nervous. I lowered my cup of tea and cradled it in my hands. Hoping not to show how terrified I was of this topic. “Why have you not marked him? Are you looking for a better leader?” She asked very straight forward. “N-no.” I stuttered, “I am just not ready.” I felt like I was whispering. It was hard to pinpoint Norma’s reaction. She sat silently for a few minutes before speaking. “A Luna who will not mate.” Norma considered her thoughts out loud for a moment. It appeared that maybe this wasn’t normal here. “Under these circumstances, things are difficult.” She spoke slowly, considering her wording very carefully. “Your mother, for instance, married right away on her eighteenth year. Your father was the chosen champion. Perhaps you need to see Ronan in battle to make your choice?” She c**ked her head to look at me. “Oh, no way!” I waved my hand in front of me, shaking my head left and right. I didn’t need to see him fight. I’m sure he was fully capable. “I want to choose Ronan for Alpha, I just do not want to mark and mate right now.” “What are you worried about, child?” She asked. Not understanding why I was hesitant on the situation. “I just… I’m not ready. I don’t really know anything about this place, or where I fit in.” I don’t even know anything about him. I added to myself. I stared down at my tea, feeling the heat rise to my cheeks as I thought about him sleeping on the couch this morning. “I see.” She lifted her tea to her lips and took a sip, thinking about what I just said. “We can get you started on your Luna duties at least. But it is best to mark Ronan as soon as possible. You should strongly consider this as it puts the whole pack in a dire situation.” I felt her eyes dig into me as she watched my every move. Judging what to say next, or how to proceed. “Why is it important that he’s marked? Can’t I just choose him to be Alpha?” I asked. “Wh-why is it important!” She almost yelled, stumbling over her words, a nervous laugh escaped her as she put her hand over her chest. “Without an Alpha, we are all going to die.” She looked at me like I was insane before continuing. “There are a lot of things in this world that can harm us. Any rogue wolf could just come in here, force their mark on you and that's it.” She waved her hands in the air, spilling her tea. Jumping to her feet, she hovered over me. “We have already lost so much, we need not to lose more.” With that she practically ran into the kitchen area, pulling down a basket while rifling through it. Taking this information, I sat staring at my cooling tea. I placed it on the table and considered my options. If it was that serious that we mate, why has he been alpha this whole time? If I left and went back, would they be able to continue forth? Is it just because I am here that has put the pack on the line like this? “If I leave, would Ronan still be Alpha?” I asked as I sat back, leaning against the white fur couch. Taking in the light musky smell. Norma gasped at my question. “Leave and go where?” She spat at me. I couldn’t help but flinch at her words. “You are our Luna, and it's time for you to start acting like one!” She huffed while walking back to me. “At least you're in luck, because I just so happen to be the best teacher around here.” She spoke as she passed me a basket full of books. “It’s time we got started,” She huffed as she sat next to me. “It seems we will need to go back to the beginning, the very beginning.” I nodded and followed along as she showed me hand-drawn pictures and old scrolls recounting the history of the Luna Goddess and her chosen mate, Marcus the Wolf God of Mars. How they created this world to escape too and be together, how the other gods envied their love and came for them. She explained the roles of being Alpha, the protector, which is needed at all costs. And the role of Luna, the care taker. She explained my roles, were to address the needs of those in the pack and care for them as needed. Allocate funds, make sure we have enough food for harsher months. And much more. A few more elders had come to greet us throughout the day as they came and went, some adding in their knowledge on the topics at hand as well. Time slipped by and before we knew it, it was already night. Amelia knocked quietly before she entered the room. “Amelia dear hello!” Norma smiled as she stood to hug the red-headed girl. Amelia looked delighted as she approached us, returning Norma’s hug. “I see you two have been pretty busy.” She smirked as her eyes laid on the table before us, covered in books and scrolls. “Oh yes!” Norma reached for a few things, cleaning up. “It was good you brought her here, she desperately needs assistance.” Quickly grabbing my hand and squeezing it, she added “Not that its your fault.” I smiled shyly at her. I just hoped I would remember everything. We started off on bad terms, but as the day progressed it worked out well. She began to understand my ignorance, and I began to understand the importance of her words. “Amelia, you won’t believe this, she thought that the goddess chooses mates for everyone of us.” She laughed, “Called it fated mates, right?” She raised an eyebrow as she continued to howl with laughter. I sunk in my chair in embarrassment as Amelia joined in. It was a mistake to bring up lore from books I read online, but what else was an eleven-year-old to do when they are changing into a beast? “Here,” Norma said as she passed me a small leather book with a butterfly engraved on its cover. “This is an old diary of your mother. She was a dear friend of mine. We found this among her things and I’ve saved it for you. Maybe it will help you understand more.” Excitedly, I took the book from her, “Thank you!” I exclaimed, as I wanted nothing more than to sit down and study every last word, smudge, and doodle. “I think its time for you to go back to your den, but I would like you to come see me everyday from here on out so we can go over more things. I think it's very important that you have a full understanding of this world, and how we as shifters work.” Norma explained as she put her hands on her hips, looking exhaustedly down at the table and its contents. “Yes, I agree. Thank you Norma, you have been a huge help!” I beamed as I held my mother's diary close to my chest. “Ronan is expecting us swiftly,” Amelia said as she drew my attention back to her. “We best get you changed and ready for that, uh - thing.” She said, already forgetting the term date. I practically bounced back to the den, smiling and greeting those in the pack on the way. Making sure that I wasn’t giving anyone more attention than needed, and keeping in mind all the rules and customs Norma told me today. Something I would for sure need more assistance with, as I didn’t know who was a Beta or a Gamma, and who to greet first in a chance meeting. But Amelia assisted when needed and everything went smoothly. Amelia and I picked out an outfit, a pair of dark brown leggings and a black blouse with a deep V-neck, showing off a nice amount of cleavage. We styled this look with a thin tan belt, and a pair of black flats. “It always surprises me how much clothing you have from the other world.” I told her. “We trade a lot with other packs and visa versa. Anything you want or need we can get it!” We left quickly as Ronan was waiting for us at the bottom of the hill, by the entrance to our little pack. As we approached, Norma’s words replayed in my mind. “Any rogue can claim you and take alpha.” She had explained that my mother's bloodline is very sacred and the pack would follow anyone she marked without question. The only reason they followed Ronan, was because he stepped up and fought for them. But they always knew I would come back and reclaim the pack. Which, apparently, by showing up here. That's what I did. It didn’t make much sense to me, so we moved on to other topics. Always seeming to circle back to mating Ronan. As we were on our way to meet him, I had built up the courage to let this happen. Even if it's just the one time, we can both then do our jobs, and build this pack up higher! With his knowledge of this world and mine of the other, there would be no stopping us! I already had a million ideas I wanted to play with, it was just a matter of where to start. Ronan stood waiting, he seemed to be very impatient as we approached. “Here she is!” Amelia stepped aside so he could get a full view of my outfit. It didn’t seem to impress him much. He wore a simple plain black T-shirt that just fit, showing off the shape of his body, and a pair of fitted jeans. Next to him on the ground that looked to be a potato sack filled with something, he threw it over his shoulder as he led the way. “Have fun you two!” Amelia called after us as we ascended the hill out of the village in silence. “How was your day?” I asked, breaking the silence. Maybe some small talk could break the ice. “Busy.” He stated flatly as he ventured off the path and into the woods. I unwillingly followed, wondering where we were going and why he was being so cold, when just this morning he was completely different. We walked through the woods briefly until we came upon a small lake. Carved out fishing boats and nets littered the shoreline, but we kept moving past them, along the water's edge. Among the trees a small opening formed, with a few wooden make-shift benches as well as a pit already built with wood, lay before us. The sun had already gone down long ago, but the moon was high in the sky, almost bigger than the one I was used to, which lit most of the night. Without saying anything, Ronan gestured for me to sit while he lit the fire. It only took him a few moments until the blaze was going. I smiled as the warmth touched my sink. Even though it was summer time, or it appeared to be, the night air still hung a chill to the skin. Ronan drew my attention by passing me a small loaf of bread and some dried meat. He then stood up the small bench across from me and sat, eating his food. Staring intently at me. The set up was romantic, but the execution on Ronan’s part was terrible. Was he even trying? “What do you want to know?” His voice rang through the silence and carried over the fire to me. He sounded cold and bored. Not what I was expecting from this outing. I sighed and looked out towards the lake. What did I want to know about Ronan? Everyone I’ve talked to has praised him to no end. They all seem very smitten with him. But he seemed very hot and cold to me. My silence seemed to annoy him further as he took another bite and let out a huff, attempting to draw my attention back. The lake carried a small fog just on the top of the water, mountains enclosed the other side of the valley. Everything was calm, the water gently rippled, reflecting the open sky above filled to the brim with stars of all colours, and the moon lit the valley, covering everything in a slight glow. Taking my eyes off the lake, I turned to the food before me. All I ate for most of the day were cookies, biscuits and tea. I started off with the dried meat. I did love myself some jerky! This tasted very much the same but a little sweeter. Ronan let out a soft growl, reminding me that he was there. He seem to not like being ignored. “What's with the mood?” I asked him, ignoring his question entirely. He stopped eating and straightened his back. “You're the one who dragged me out here, so you could ask me questions.” He stated, his alpha aura filling the space between us once again. “I-I, didn’t. I told Amelia, I-I j-just wanted to get to know y-you m-more, before we m-mark.” I stumbled over my words. Feeling his aura seep into everything around me, it almost felt like everything it touched was dying, it was too strong and for whatever reason I feared it, I could feel my internal wolf stir and want to force its own aura out, if not fully challenge Ronan. I knew I couldn’t take him in a fight but I felt threatened. Ronan glared down at me, as we sat in silence. “And this is my Luna,” He huffed more to himself than to me. I knew I was most likely not what he expected, a girl who stutters when nervous, who can’t speak up for herself. What kind of Luna could I be if this was all it took to break me? Memories of foster homes came back to me. Some were good but I just always seemed to be in a position's under someone else, looked down on, and just mistreated entirely. I couldn’t take this anymore, it was obvious that this was going nowhere. I stood, forcing tears that were already threatening to show back down. I gulped my pride and spat back at him, “And this is what they chose for me.” Feeling the bones in my body snap and crack, the fabric from my clothes stretch and tear, my wolf came out and I took off. I felt him chase after me in an instant, but I was faster. I was much smaller than him and I could make it through the narrow trees and undergrowth better than he could. I traced the way we came, past the boats and fishing gear, to the gravel road. I took a moment to breathe before I dashed across the road and through the woods on the other side. I didn’t want to go back to the den, I didn’t want to go back to the pack. This wasn't what I wanted when I thought I would go home.
