Chapter Eight
I was losing him, running through the thickest parts of the woods, pushing through small narrow passages. A large and very loud howl echoed through the night with many answering his call. It was Ronan, he was getting back up. Something in that thought brought more motivation to go fourth. I felt like I had run at full throttle for hours.
Slowing down, I noticed the smell here was different. I knew I had passed the barrier of our boarder. That's not what I wanted, I just wanted to get away. Turning back, I quickly found the boarder lines and sat on our side.
I felt the pack trying to mind link, I felt them asking for answers that I just wasn’t ready to give. Do I just keep going? Do I just run and never come back? Part of me wanted to, to be free from this responsibility and just live freely in my van again without a care in the world. A lonely life it was, but it was the best life I have lived so far. I could always go back to the Crescent Pack, but I would still be met with the same situation.
Growling, I laid down in frustration. I had to stay. I didn’t have a choice. Resting my head on my paws, I waited. I knew they would follow my scent and find me, and until then I would sit here and try to figure out my life.
I will not be mating Ronan, not after tonight. I don’t care what Norma told me its not happening. Tonight made that very clear. Would someone else be able to take his place as Alpha? Would they be willing to step on his toes?
A twig snapped across the boarder. Probing my head up, I saw two massive glowing eyes looking my way. This creature was dog-like, but it was contorted into half man and half dog. It stood high on its back legs, while its back curved towards the ground where its head hovered staring. Its body is covered in a fine black fur.
A screech-like growl sounded as it bared its teeth and ran its claws along the ground. A warning.
I jumped up in an instant, slowly backing away, baring my teeth as a response. If this creature lunged at me I don’t even know what I would do. It was huge compared to me, and terrifying. I tried to keep my fear down, as it most likely could sense that, as would I. My only option was to turn tale and run, which I did quickly. But I wasn’t fast enough.
The creature ran foreword with incredible speeds. Throwing me into a tree. I howled out in pain as I forced myself to my feet, dodging another attack. I let out a growl as the creature lunged at me again, narrowly missing me once more. Quickly, I took this chance to run forward into the woods, and ran as fast as I could. I could hear the creature behind me crashing through the trees, taunting me with howls and growls. Almost playing with me, rather than attacking.
I made it to a clearing that I had run around before. This time I ran through it, not wanting to waste any time trying to get back to the pack. Bolting out of the woods behind me in a matter of seconds, I was swooped up into the air so fast that it took the breath right out of me. Crashing down onto the ground, I watched as the creature was quickly making its way closer to me, to finish me off. Forcing myself back onto my feet, a metallic taste filled my mouth. Slowly backing up as the creature came forward, I was backed into a corner. I was going to die here. The creature howled in victory as it knew I was finished, staring at me with a deep hunger for his kill.
At the edge of the clearing just out of the corner of my eye, Ronan came running, his fur bounced with each step, his muscles rippled with each bound. He let out a growl that struck fear into the creature. It turned around to look at him and I made a quick dash towards the woods. I was not going to let this chance to escape slip by.
Growling and snapping filled the once peaceful night's air. In the cover of the bush, I turned to see Ronan, taking the creature down by the throat. More of our pack joined in as they came into the clearing. A few stood back scenting the air. Once they picked up my scent, they joined me from where I was taking cover.
The fight didn’t last long. Ronan could have killed the creature but, didn’t. He held it down for awhile, growling and snapping before he released it and it ran back the way it came followed by other members of the pack. He truly was an incredible fighter. However, he didn’t look the least bit impressed with me. I refused to give in and apologize this time. He was a jerk!
I refused to mind-link anyone on the way back to the pack village. I also refused to shift back to speak to anyone as well. I wasn’t ready to talk, nor did I want to. It was already bad enough that I ran off. Let alone almost got myself killed by something I didn’t even know was a threat out here.
Norma had greeted us at the entrance of the village looking very worried. Amelia, being one of the wolves who came to find me, shared glances with Norma. They forced me to stop to check over my wounds which, due to our ability, were healing rather quickly. I knew my front leg was hurt pretty badly, and my ribs were not only bruised, but they still have the claw marks from the monster, which would take more time to heal. The pain didn’t bother me, it was as if I was numb to it. Most likely from the anxiety, I figured.
I felt Norma trying to mind link me, and I allowed the message to come through. “What happen?” She asked as she walked with me back to my den. I glanced at her, still being in my wolf form, and sighed.
“It’s nothing.” I said as I took off a head of her, not wanting to talk about what had just transpired.
The den felt cold and dark when I arrived at the front door. I wished so much that this could have just been mine, the growing fear that I was going to be stuck here with Ronan ate at me.
Pulling a twig out of my hair, I knew I needed a bath. Shifting back into my human form, I made my way into the small pool. I let the water wash away the blood and dirt that now layered my skin.
“MELODY!” I heard Ronan yell into the den. I wrapped my arms around my chest as he followed my scent all the way here. “What were you thinking? Running off like that! Do you even know what you have done!” His voice was harsh and direct. The Alpha aura once again suffocating me. I sank further into the water, suppressing tears.
“Melody answer me!” He demanded as he came closer.
“What do you want me to say?” I asked as I watched the water flow from the wooded pipe into the pool. Refusing to look at him. “Yes I messed up. Yes I shouldn’t have ran off.”
He growled in response, and stood just behind me. “Your lucky to be alive! If I didn’t get there in time-“
I cut him off, “Yes I know! I would have died. I get it, now leave, I wish to be alone!” I demanded, without a single stutter. I felt proud of myself with the firmness in my voice for once. I didn’t need him here rubbing everything in my face.
He hesitated for a moment, sighing. “That was a Lycan, they are like us but-“
“Uglier.” I spat, still refusing to look at him. I heard him stifle a laugh before he continued, lowering himself to the ground to sit close by.
“Well yes, but you managed to go onto their land, he claimed he was protecting it.”
“I did go pass the scent border, but the second I realized I turned back, I was on our side when he attacked me.” I stated clearly.
“That’s a problem then.” Ronan sighed. “Are you hurt anywhere? Should I get a healer?” He asked with a little more worry in his voice. I sunk a little deeper into the pool. Why couldn’t he show that he cared before? I shook my head as I fully submerged myself under the water, rubbing my face with my hands to get that disgusting beast's smell off me.
That night felt hard to sleep, the ugly distorted face of the Lycan haunted my every dream. The window I once loved in this room became a point of fear, it was like he was outside watching me, when I knew he wasn’t. Ronan coming and going from the den didn’t help. Every time he left or came back, I would sit up instantly in my bed, full wolf alert and ready to run. So, when I watched the world outside get brighter, I knew today was not going to be fun. My wounds were mostly healed but I was still bruised and sore with each movement.
“He didn’t cross our scent border.” I heard Kai say outside. I could sense Ronan was at the door speaking with him.
“Extra patrols until he's found or chased off. And round the clock guards for the Luna. The last thing we need is a rogue attack.” Ronan’s voice carried to me. I could tell he was trying to be quiet but the annoyance in his voice failed.
“Tarlo should stay here for now, he’s one of the best warriors while we hunt this dumb-ass down.” Kai added. Ronan made a grunt and agreed. The door closed soon after and I felt Ronan coming this way.
“Luna? Are you awake?” He asked as he knocked on the small wooden door. I knew he could sense that I was up, annoyance protruded off me as I rolled over in bed facing the window.
“Y-yes.” I managed out, cursing myself for the stutter.
Ronan opened the door and came into the room, “For your protection, Tarlo will accompany you today. as well as my sister Amelia.” I felt like a child needing babysitting. I hated feeling like this, but after just taking off yesterday and the whole mark thing. I understood.
I still had to make a remark to him, he deserved it after all. “F-for my p-protection, or for yours?” I asked, clearly hinting to the fact that his title was on the line too. He let out a growl but quickly contained it, leaving without saying a word.
I let out my own huff as I slowly sat up in bed. I wasn’t going to be moving much today. My whole body felt stiff and sore, but any open wounds were closed, but small tender pink lines where the claws raked over my body still lingered.
I decided to stay in bed, and read over my mother's old diary. Each page she filled with thoughts of her day. She hated learning to be Luna, but it was her duty. She expressed this through her words many times, but when it came down to her people, she would do anything for them. She talked about the upcoming festival of warmth. It concluded the winter, into spring, and it was always a happy day, she wrote.
Her words guided me throughout her day, lost in her world. It felt like I was right there with her. I had to close the book. Tears filled my eyes at the thought of her. I had no idea what she looked like, who she really was. Why were they in the other world? What caused them to get into a vehicle and crash? It just didn’t make sense. I knew I had to find out. What took my parents away from me?
