Chapter Nine
The next few days carried on as normal. I ate my meals in the village center with the rest of the pack, and studied with Norma in the elders' den. Amelia and Tarlo are always close by. The babysitting was getting annoying, but I did really enjoy Amelia’s company at least.
She was hot-headed like her brother, but she did also have a very sweet side to her. She felt guilty that the night she planned took a terrible turn. She cursed her brother for being an i***t but tried to explain he'd never been one to be a ladies' man. Since he was fifteen, he’s been focused on the pack as the Alpha, taking care of the boarders, slowly expanding, as they recovered from their losses.
Ronan had been gone for days, our territory wasn’t that big, so I didn’t understand why it took him so long to get this guy, but maybe something else had happened. I buried myself in studying so that I didn’t have to think about it.
Norma was in the middle and explained that when Theo disappeared, the Lycan’s and the pack to the north attacked together, massacring almost everyone. Only a small few were able to survive and make it out. It was chaos, she recounted.
“Ronan stepped up, and got us all out safely, every last person in the pack today owes him their life.” Norma said as she folded her arms over her chest, sighing at the current state of our relationship.
“He’s never been interested in anything else but the pack. He has no idea how to be romantic or take the time for something else.” Amelia defended him, pleading with me to give him another chance. “Here it’s mostly just us picking the strongest male we can attract to mate.” She added.
“I don’t know. I get where you guys are coming from, but it's difficult. I’m just not used to this” I mumbled as I recounted that night. “Maybe if I can focus on being a good Luna, and taking some of that responsibility, it might help.” I suggested.
“Thats a great idea!” Norma beamed! “Tomorrow we will go around and speak with the heads of each unit and see what the people need. It’s something to start with, at least,” she suggested.
“Great idea!” Amelia sat back in her chair, the anxiety of the relationship between her brother and I, clearly gone from her mind.
“I’ll speak with Ronan tonight as well and see if there is something he wants me to try and do as well.” I smiled thinking maybe there could be more, also slightly hoping he would be back.
“Ronan won't be back tonight.” Tarlo chipped in from across the room, crushing my hopes. He had been lying on one of the couches, a book over his eyes. We all assumed he was sleeping on the job, but we didn’t mind. “He’s out hunting that Rogue, since its been advancing in our territory, checking for weak spots, its best to just kill it sooner rather then later.” Tarlo explained, filled with longing for the hunt.
I nodded in response, knowing he couldn’t see. It was hard with Tarlo. I wanted to speak with him more, but I’m terrified I would mess up and somehow, and give him the wrong idea. He clued into this right-away and has always kept his distance. Only piping up when he had something important to say or came around when we needed him.
“Once the rogue is dealt with, we can go out with Harold and he can teach you some defense moves. Every Luna should know how to defend herself. As fast as you are, it may come in handy.” She smiled as she cleared the table, putting today's books away.
“Harold is one of the older elders, but don’t let that fool you! He trained everyone in the village at one point, even your father.” Amelia pipped up. I smiled at the thought, maybe I could ask him more about my father and what type of person he was?
“I think we are finished for today anyway. We should get some grub.” Norma mentioned as she piled the last of the books on the table.
Amelia and I nodded, both excited about a much needed break. Most of the lessons so far have just comprised of history and what to do and not to do and how Alpha’s, Gamma’s and Omega’s work. Our pack, being so small, had fewer Omega’s over all, and treated them mostly the same due to our size. But we were ever growing as children were about to, out number adults in the pack very soon. It was weird to think about, but the nursery which I had yet to visit was overflowing, Norma had told me. Most of the elders these days were over there helping tend to them all.
“Have you learned anything in your mom's diary yet?” Amelia asked as we walked out of the elders' den towards the center of the village where dinner was being prepared. I shook my head no, as I smelled something sweet being roasted over the fire, almost like a slow roasted honey ham.
“It’s mostly just learning about her, I guess, not so much Luna tasks yet besides the fact that she hated a lot of the studying, she talks a lot about the forest, and some of her favorite spots. I’ll have to go find them one day.” I laughed, thinking about how similar we both were.
“We’ll, I wouldn’t say she hated being Luna, but she did love to run, you definitely inherited her speed. That's for sure.” Norma pitched in, recounting the night before.
“What was she like?” I asked. Norma thought for a moment, her soft silver hair blowing in the breeze. The scent of rain blew on the wind, but the sky was clear. Our wolf senses knew it wouldn’t stay that way for long.
“She was really just the Perfect Luna, loved her people. Cared for them deeply. When you were born she was over the moon with you.” She smiled as she recounted the memory. “She sang songs to you all the time, and you would coo back to her and try to sing with her too, which was why she called you Melody.”
I loved hearing about my mother. I don’t remember her at all. I was so young when we ended up in a car accident in the other world. “Why were they in the other world with me?” I asked, thinking about what could have caused them to go. Norma became quiet for a moment, the smile wiped from her face.
“Back then, you had gotten terribly sick, your mother was beside herself with worry. You were her only pup after all. Your father had talked to a few pack leaders in the other realm and agreed to take you there to be healed. It was when you were on your way back that it happened. Theo swore up and down that the other pack was behind it. Trying to take out our line of succession to weaken us.” She explained as we entered the center of the village and stopped walking so we could finish the conversation.
“Obviously, Theo tried to act on attacking the other pack, but that didn’t go well for him either, so he gave up and just searched for you since you were still alive until he went mad.” She finished explaining.
“Oh okay, I guess that would make sense why they were there then.” It still seemed weird to me that they were there together with me, and died the way they did. I wanted to find out more, but for now this would have to do.
“Yes, but enough of this talk, let's enjoy some warm food!” She said as she placed her hand on my shoulder and squeezed, trying to lighten the mood.
Amelia and I went our separate ways as she made her way to the elder table, where Gamma’s and some Omegas would serve her as well.
I didn’t know they were going there because of me. I felt even worse now, knowing that if I didn’t get sick they would most likely still be alive. Amelia picked up on my sudden mood change and changed the topic once we sat down.
“So what's our next plan of action?” She smiled at me. I knew full well she was talking about Ronan.
“I’m not sure you know him best, right?” I inquired, trying not to encourage too many people around us to listen in.
“Hey Luna, I wanted to express my loyalty to you.” A male voice said as he approached us from the beta table, where there were more empty seats then full the last few days. Most of the betas were out on the hunt for the rogue, Tarlo had explained earlier. But a selected few stayed behind as a form of protection in case anything attacks us.
“Thanks.” I tried to say as flatly as possible. I knew what he was trying to do. Amelia said this would happen with Ronan gone. Some males brave enough would try to attract my eye any way they could. If they got marked by me, Ronan would have no choice but to step down as Alpha. Something I was tempted to do most days when he was around, considering his hot and cold attitude. But I knew better, the people here really looked up to Ronan, and would be devastated if he stepped down.
Looking back at Amelia, ignoring the man in front of me, he laughed. “Your good Luna!” he smirked, “But will you be tempted?” He asked, jumping up onto the platform. Startling both Amelia and I.
“REGAN!” Tarlo growled as he too jumped up on the platform from somewhere behind us. “Step down.” He almost hissed in response. It looked like Regan considered fighting him for a second, be chose against it. He jumped back down, smirking all the while.
“I was only playing around.” He mocked, “No need to loose your temper.” He waved his hand behind him as he sat down at his table, staring intently at me. I refused to make eye contact, purposely looking everywhere but in his direction.
“What a rodent,” Amelia spat in his direction, also not making eye contact with him.
Dinner didn’t have any more hiccups. No one else tried to bid for my attention, which was good. I wasn’t really in the mood to deal with more needy men. I already had Ronan to deal with and his right-hand men. I knew deep down though that I would have to be careful. Regan was only testing his ground. He hadn’t really taken his shot yet.
Once back at the den, I decided to skip the bath tonight, due to the rain starting to fall. I knew Ronan said that sometimes the room floods and I didn’t want to be enjoying myself and then dealing with heavy rainfall all of a sudden.
Opening the window to let the pitter-patter of the rain fill the silence. I took my mother's diary out and began reading. The storm picked up, and lightning cracked over head sending a loud boom echoing throughout the valley, flowing into the den, stifling Tarlo’s snoring from the living space. Among the amazing smell of rain, a faint burning smell drifted in on the breeze.
Concerned, I put my book down, and got out of bed. I stood at the window looking out to see if perhaps the lightening lit something on fire. The rain was heavy, coming down quickly. I looked out, only to see two yellow eyes staring back at me. A massive brown wolf, the size of Ronan stood in the center of the clearing. Clearly not one that I’ve seen before.
I took in this wolf as I watched it closely. Was this Regan taking his shot? Would he be so bold as to sneak into my room at night? Or was this someone else? A flicker of recognition came across its face, as its eyes turned to lust. The beast took no time in sprinting right for me. I let out a scream as realization set in. Whoever this was, they were set on marking me.
