Evelyn POV
I froze, not sure how to tell her that I had my life turned upside down within the last 24 hours, and that I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing here either.
So I stared at her dumbfounded while she glared back at me.
“So you think that you’re good enough for the Luna?” She spat. “A loser werewolf like yourself can’t handle the responsibilities that come with being the queen’s assistant. You won’t last long here.”
She stepped closer to me and I almost tripped taking a step back.
I gulped when she leaned closer and spat into the glass of orange juice.
“Let’s see how the queen likes that.” She sneered.
With that, she walked past me and continued down the stairs.
Feeling anxiety rising inside me, I set the tray down before my trembling hands dropped it and I forced myself to take deep breaths.
I hadn’t even been here for a day, and I had already gotten myself a bully. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that she wanted to be queen Valeria’s assistant. And there was still a chance for her to be, because I wasn’t really off to a good start.
I frantically looked around, looking for a way to fix the orange juice that the girl spat in, and I realized that I still had my own orange juice in a bottle in my uniform.
I couldn’t use the glass either, so I took it off the tray and hid it behind a vase in the window. I replaced it with my bottle of orange juice and picked up the tray again, hoping that they wouldn’t think that it was weird.
When I reached their bedroom door, I knocked and waited.
“Come in.”
I opened the door, walked inside and set the tray down on the coffee table.
“Good morning, Evelyn.” Queen Valeria smiled and sat up in bed with the covers still wrapped around her.
“Good morning, my queen.” I replied just as king Tyson walked out of the bathroom wearing black trousers and a button down shirt.
“About that.” Queen Valeria frowned. “I know there’s all these rules about addressing a queen by her title, but when we’re alone I’d appreciate it if you just called me Valeria.”
I smiled.
“Alright.” I replied. “Did you sleep well?”
“I did.” Valeria replied. “You?”
“The best sleep I’ve had in a long time.” I admitted.
“I’m glad to hear that.” Valeria grinned and got up from the bed.
She was only wearing a bra and panties, and I was surprised at how muscular she was. It didn’t show clearly in the dress she was wearing yesterday. But my eyes widened when I saw the scars on her torso.
I quickly diverted my gaze, but the questions swirled in my mind. When the Caniluna pack announced that the king had found his mate, they didn’t really say much about her other than that she was human, but had some mysterious powers. Rumors had it that she was some witch hybrid, but I didn’t know if it was true.
“My tablet is over there, the passcode is 112136 and go to the calendar.” She said while she walked over to the closet.
I picked up the tablet and opened the calendar.
“You have studies with Fiona between eight and eleven.” I read. “Then a lunch meeting with the Alpha and some board members from the Maxwell building between 11.30 and 12.30. After that, it’s training for the entire afternoon.”
While I talked, Valeria pulled on a navy blue maxi skirt and paired it with a white shirt and white sandals. Then she strolled over to the breakfast tray and picked up the bottle of orange juice.
She looked at me questioningly and my heart felt like it stopped.
“It’s going to be hot today.” I blurted. “So… maybe you’d like to keep the juice you don’t finish for breakfast. That’s why it’s a bottle instead.”
I mentally kicked myself when I realized that it was the most stupid excuse I had ever heard. If the kitchen would want Valeria to drink more, why not just bring an extra bottle instead of switching? After all, it wasn’t that big of a bottle and Valeria would probably finish it easily.
“Right.” Valeria said hesitantly, but dropped the subject and I relaxed slightly.
King Tyson and Valeria sat together on the couch while they ate their breakfast, and I looked through the rest of Valeria’s calendar to try to figure out how she worked. I had to admit that I had no idea what I was doing, but I wanted to do my best to be worthy of the job she gave me.
When they were finished, two Omegas came in to clean up the bedroom, and I left the dishes with them before joining Valeria in her office where a woman in her fifties with her graying black hair in an elegant bun and a beautiful red gown was waiting for us. She radiated poise and perfection, and I realized that I was standing face to face with the former queen.
I bowed to her while Valeria smiled and walked over to a bookshelf.
“Good morning Fiona.” She said and pulled out a series of books.
“Good morning Valeria.” Fiona replied and sat down by the conference table. “Who’s your friend?”
Valeria set the books down on the table and pointed at me.
“This is my new assistant, Evelyn.” She replied.
Fiona frowned in confusion.
“I didn’t realize that the responsibilities were weighing so much on you.” She said softly.
Valeria shrugged and sat down by the table too.
“Not really.” She replied. “But my powers are acting up, and Tyson suggested that it would probably help me figure it out if I had someone to help me coordinate everything.”
Fiona smiled and took Valeria’s hand.
“We can slow down the pace if you need it.” She said. “You’ve been improving so much since we started.”
She gestured to Valeria’s outfit.
“At least it’s not jeans.” She smirked.
Valeria laughed.
“Baby steps.” She chuckled. “Where were we? I think we covered the vampire war in 1560.”
“Yes.” Fiona said and opened a book.
The rest of the morning, Fiona lectured about the lycan history, while Valeria was taking notes and I just listened quietly, completely engrossed in the story.
I barely registered that three hours had passed, and soon it was time for the lunch meeting with the board of directors at the Maxwell Building.
The Maxwell Building was a large science facility in London where only werewolves and lycans worked. King Tyson was the CEO and it was the largest income for the Caniluna pack.
The board members were all on video call, and I sat on a chair in the corner, away from the view of the camera. I didn’t understand most of what they talked about, but Tyson and Valeria seemed to have it covered.
Their lunch was served during the meeting, and when the meeting concluded, Valeria asked me to take the dishes to the kitchen while she went to change into some workout gear.
I was worried that I wouldn’t remember the way from the office to the kitchen, and I walked the halls trying to figure out the large labyrinth that was the castle.
I started to get more and more frantic when I started to realize that I had lost my way, and I glanced at the time, fearing that I was going to be running late for Valeria’s training.
I picked up the pace and rounded a corner just as someone collided with me, knocking the tray over and it fell to the floor with a clattering sound. I stumbled back from the force of the stranger slamming into me and landed on my ass.
How many more things could go wrong today?
