#musicvibe - Sober, Laurell
*
Evelyn POV
Queen Valeria grinned widely and squeezed my hand.
“Thank you.” She whispered. “Come on, let me show you around and where you’ll be working.”
I followed her out of the car, and looked up in awe at the magnificent building towering over my head.
We walked inside, and I strained my neck trying to look at everything as we walked. Queen Valeria seemed to notice it, and she slowed down so that I could take a look around.
She walked me through a labyrinth of hallways and stairs until we reached an office with a desk by the window, a comfortable looking sofa and a small conference table.
“This is my office.” She explained. “I both work and study here, so we’ll be spending a lot of time in this room. My mother in law, Fiona, was queen before me and she gives me lessons on everything I need to know. I would like for you to attend these lessons with me and help me study.”
I nodded and she showed me the rest of the Alpha wing, their bedroom and King Tyson’s office. Then she took me outside and showed me the training facility and a huge garden at the back of the castle. I looked at everything in awe and it felt like my mind was going to explode with everything that it needed to process.
The sun was setting when we came back inside and a woman in her fifties with light brown hair greeted us. She was dressed in a black dress and a white apron, so I guessed that she was a servant here.
“Claire, this is Evelyn, my new assistant.” Queen Valeria said. “Evelyn, this is Claire, the head Omega of this pack.”
Claire smiled warmly and I instantly liked her. She seemed so kind and gentle compared to the stern head Omega at Grey Moon that hit me with a carpet beater to wake me up that very same morning.
“Welcome to the Caniluna pack.” Claire said. “I have prepared a room for you.”
Queen Valeria nodded and turned to me.
“I’m going to leave you to it.” She grinned. “Make sure to get some rest, we have a lot of work to do in the morning.”
Claire bowed to her and I did the same. To my surprise, Queen Valeria snorted.
“You know, there’s no one around.” She laughed. “You don’t have to do that.”
“Luna, it’s the respect you deserve.” Claire chuckled and took her hands in hers.
I saw queen Valeria’s cheeks starting to turn red before she turned her head away.
“I’m just not used to it.” She mumbled.
“You’ll get there, Luna.” Claire whispered and squeezed her hands reassuringly.
Queen Valeria cleared her throat, gave me a small smile before turning and leaving me alone with Claire.
“This way, dear.” Claire chirped and started walking in the other direction.
I trailed after her quietly while Claire started talking.
“Alpha and Luna usually get up at six thirty.” She said. “I’d suggest that you bring them their breakfast tomorrow morning. That way you can go over the schedule and your assignments for the day.”
I had to remind myself that the king and queen were Alpha and Luna of their own pack. In the werewolf packs, they were always addressed as king and queen, so I was momentarily confused by the title change.
From what I knew, there were thirteen packs in the UK, and the royal pack was the fourteenth. Most of the people living here were lycans, and the king’s bloodline was special. According to legend, all werewolves and lycans stemmed from his bloodline. They were able to turn humans into lycans with the venom from the extended canines in their lycan form. I guessed that was why Valeria was turned into a lycan when she accepted Tyson as a mate and he marked her. Werewolves were a bit different. Werewolves were a result of lycans mating with humans, making the offspring’s wolf smaller and losing some of the abilities that a lycan had, like the ability to mindlink. The wolf was more the size of a normal wolf while a lycan was a huge beast with incredible speed and strength.
The werewolves also had the ability to reject their mate if they weren’t compatible. If a lycan rejects their mate, it could result in death for them both.
Claire led me through a hallway with doors on both sides. She opened one of them and showed me inside. I gasped in surprise when I saw what was inside.
“This is my room?” I asked.
Claire smiled and nodded.
The room was white with a dark wooden floor, a queen size bed was standing in the middle of the room. There was a desk by the window and a closet in the corner. To my right was a bathroom with a shower.
“Am I sharing this room with someone?“ I asked.
Surely there was no way this was all for me?
“This is your room, Evelyn.” Claire repeated. “Yours, and only yours.”
Tears lined my eyes as I remembered the dirty old cot in my old room at the orphanage. This was the nicest room I ever had.
“Get some rest.” Claire said and patted my shoulder. “And set that alarm clock for 6 AM tomorrow morning. There are uniforms in the closet for you. Let me know if something doesn’t fit. I roughly estimated your size so they might not be perfect.”
“Thank you.” I croaked out, struggling not to burst into tears in front of Claire.
She seemed to understand, because she smiled and left me alone.
I was exhausted, but I forced myself to take a hot shower rinsing the dirt of my old pack away. After the shower, I felt a thousand times lighter, and I sighed in content when I laid down on the bed and pulled the covers to my chin. I almost forgot to set the timer, and I sat up to get it sorted before snuggling back underneath the covers.
I was asleep within seconds, and was jolted awake by the alarm the next morning. After rummaging through the closet, I slipped on a uniform and headed for the kitchen, praying that I wasn’t going to get lost on my way there.
When I got to the kitchen, Claire handed me a plate.
“Eat this before you go.” She said and pointed to a tray on the counter. “The food is almost ready.”
I scarfed down the sandwich and put the small plastic bottle of orange juice in my pocket for later. Then I picked up the tray and headed for the giant staircase, careful not to spill the orange and apple juice from the filled glasses on my tray.
I was so focused on my task that I almost bumped into someone. Startled, I looked up at the blonde Omega glaring back at me.
“Excuse me.” I said and tried to go around her, but she stepped in my way again.
“Who are you and why are you here?”
