Chapter 8 At the stroke of midnight, Valentine materialized at the foot of the spiral staircase. Absently he rubbed at his bare arms. He’d chosen a black leather corset, its shoulder straps decorated with bejeweled buckles, and the front a crisscross of laces which offered a tantalizing glimpse of his pale skin. Then he looked down at himself and shook his head. I still don’t know what possessed me to wear the taffeta skirt. “Cinder? Are you there?” Cole’s voice came from down the dimly lit hallway and Valentine whirled around at the sound. He’d expected Cole to be somewhere on the stairs. “Yes. I’m here.” Valentine stared down the hallway and picked out the broad figure of Cole at the end. “This way. Hurry. There are guards patrolling. I don’t want anyone seeing or questioning us.”
