The Sultan and the Duke were now alone. Then the older man led the way to two chairs standing in the very centre of the room. For a moment the Duke was surprised and then he realised that that was a precaution so that, if they spoke in low voice, it would be impossible for anyone to overhear what was said. He thought that it was something that would amuse Lord Curzon and his eyes were twinkling when the Sultan indicated by a gesture of his hand that he should sit down. He bowed, as was expected, to show his appreciation of the concession and sat opposite the Sultan. They were near enough to one another so that not only could they not be overheard, but there was no possibility of their conversation being lip-read.
