CHAPTER FOURTHE Duke was too surprised to reply and the girl asked,
“Why are you – here?”
There was a look of fear in her large eyes and the Duke said cautiously,
“I think I should ask you that question.”
Now she looked at him in surprise and he said,
“Are you a tourist like myself?”
She did not answer, but reached out her hand and pulled some vines over the wall beside her.
It was then that the Duke had an idea and he asked her,
“Do you perhaps live in that cottage which I saw a short distance away?”
There was a definite expression of what was almost terror now in her eyes as she answered,
“I don’t – think that has – anything to do with – you!”
“I just wondered if the man who guided me here and has now gone to the cottage wanted perhaps to see you,” the Duke remarked.
