Chapter 7 They were walking in silence, their minds occupied with horrendous thoughts. They were on their own after they left the territory of the pack that belonged to them. Hilmand and the Delta guided them on a safe path through which they could enter the human world. Delta was supposed to be with them but the pack's emergency required his presence. The plan was simple: send Xavier and Scarlet among the humans where they are safe and return when the pack becomes stable. In a few hours, their whole world drastically changed. With every second passing by, the silence between them was getting eerie—Xavier’s steps following Scarlet’s as they passed through the forest. Scarlet’s thoughts were haunting her, she needed some distraction, her eyes followed Xavier’s figure who was walking in dead silence, his hands clenched tightly till his knuckles turned white. She stopped mid-track— “Xavier?” She called out his name. Her ocean blue eyes looked for his green ones. He looked at her, a look of disturbance displayed on his face. He looked annoyed, agitated, helpless, and . . . miserable. For the first time in hours, he opened his mouth to speak to her, “We need to be in the human world before midnight,” He said and walked away from her. “We don’t have much time,” Scarlet sensed a little tremble in his voice. No matter how strong or well-trained they were— in the end, they were just teenagers— who were not ready for this sudden turbulence in their lives. Scarlet sighed loudly and followed him quickly— she wanted to talk to him but he was too disturbed, too scared to talk to her, so she did what felt right. She walked close beside him, calming him with her pack’s scent that resided in her. . . . “726-E,” Scarlet whispered as she located the place where they were going to stay. She opened the door of their new place— an apartment that was big enough for the two of them. Delta guided them thoroughly about this new city, the new place they were going to live in, and how to survive among humans. They were short on time, so the Delta couldn’t explain the whole dynamics of the human world, but Scarlet reads— she knew enough information about the human world. Her eyes scanned the new place— dropping the baggage on the floor, she began to make a plan, “We need to go and get the supplies for the house. I assume we might have to live with new identities and make a story about our identities just in case. She began to unpack immediately— she wasn't expecting a reply from him, but she also wasn't expecting a vase to fly just a few inches away from her head— smashing it into a thousand pieces. Scarlet could not process what just happened— she was too stunned to utter a word— her eyes looked at him with a look of disbelief. Xavier was breathing heavily, his veins popping out of his arms. He went for another one, but Scarlet stopped him instantly. Her voice boomed in the hall, “Have you lost your mind?!” She snatched the vase from his hand and put it away. He yelled back, “I certainly have! Too bad I’m not as perfect as Miss Scarlet is!” “What is your problem, Xavier?” She yelled at him. He was breathing heavily— closed his eyes for a moment. “How can you be so f*****g calm?” His voice broke down as he dropped himself to the couch. The wave of anger was finally suppressed. She walked and stood in front of him. “I’m not calm, Xavier. I’m just as scared as you are, but us getting scared is no help. You need to understand why we are here. Making all these efforts to protect ourselves, we must live here well and shield ourselves before returning to the pack. Do you understand? We can't just change overnight, but we have to try— there is no other choice.” Scarlet tried to be reasonable. There was a moment of silence between them before he got up— his height towering over hers. “Can you do it again?” He asked. His eyes held a beam of hope. “What?” She asked in a confused tone. “Can you sense the pack? You could hear their cries from so far away. Can you sense anything? Anything?” He asked in a desperate tone. Scarlet brows frowned. “Don’t be absurd, Xavier. We are in the human world— I can barely get your scent and you’re telling me to sense anything from the pack? Who do you think I am?” She retorted and the hope in his eyes drained away. She sighed loudly, “Gamma and Delta will inform us about the pack from time to time. Have some faith in elders. I believe that, like always, they will be able to overcome this obstacle and we will be home soon.” She told him some reassuring words, to which he nodded. “Now, clean up the mess you created.” She told him and pointed towards the broken pieces on the floor. Usually, Xavier claps back with a witty reply but this time he was too gloomy to even answer back, so he did what he was told to do. Scarlet sighed loudly once again—her head throbbing with intense pain. She turned to look at his figure— bent down to pick up the pieces of the vase. “Xavier?” She called out his name and he turned slowly to look at her. “I’ll tell you,” Her vision began to get a little hazy, “ I’ll tell you if I sense anything from the pack.” She told him and they stared into each other’s eyes. A small smile spread on his lips— he nodded before turning back to pick up the remaining pieces.
