Chapter 8
Two days passed by. Xavier and Scarlet settled themselves in their new home. The aura was tense between them. There was no news from the pack. Both of them didn’t leave the house in these two days. There was just silence— an eerie silence.
Scarlet was reading a book when the doorbell rang, followed by heavy knocks that grabbed her attention. Scarlet's head turned towards Xavier, who was doing push-ups on the floor.
“Who could this be?” She whispered to him. The knocking began once again.
Xavier got up from the floor, his expression matching Scarlet’s. “Can it be the Delta? Gamma? Is the war over?” Xavier asked and walked towards the door in a hurry.
He opened the door swiftly— his smile dropped when he saw a familiar face, “Mr. Patel?” He uttered. Scarlet pushed Xavier aside to see if she heard right.
It was a dusky man in his late forties wearing a long tail coat– his face half-covered with a hat. He removed the hat from his head, a kind smile playing on his lips when his gaze met Scarlet's. “Good to see you, darling.”
Scarlet engulfed him in a big tight hug, “It’s so good to see you,” She whispered in his chest. Mr. Patel patted her head and they parted.
His gaze shifted to Xavier, who was standing with his arms folded around his chest, “It’s good to see you too, young man.” Xavier nodded and welcomed him in.
The moment he entered, Xavier asked him if he knew anything about the pack, “Delta informed me that they have sent you both to the human world and, as I’ve been living here for quite a few years, they have sent me to look after you,” he answered in a calm tone.
Xavier snapped, listening to him, “We don’t need your surveillance. Just tell us if you have any news from the pack,” Scarlet passed Xavier a sharp look, “Watch your tone, Xavier.” Xavier's jaw clenched listening to her, but he chose to ignore her.
Mr.Patel cleared his throat, “It’s fine and, indeed, I do have some news regarding the pack.” Xavier's eyes widened listening to this.
He asked in an eager tone, “What is it? The pack is fine, right? What about the Alphas and Lunas? We can go back, right?” Scarlet passed him a pitying look. She had never seen him so devastated before.
“Both of you should sit down and listen to me patiently,” Mr. Patel pointed towards the chair. Xavier broke out in a cold sweat listening to this. Mr. Patel sensed the tension and smiled gently, “Calm down for a minute and listen to me,”
Xavier took a few deep breaths to calm himself down. Scarlet wrapped her arms around herself, her mouth stretched and drawn back.
“Both of your parents are safe,” he said and they took a sigh of relief, “ —but the pack is not,” he continued.
“What happened this time? This is not the first time that rogues or the neighboring packs have attacked us. The Crimson Stone pack has never been so vulnerable. We’re one of the most robust packs, then how did this happen?” Xavier's voice got louder every second.
“They were not alone,” Mr. Patel said,
“Was it the Night Walkers or the rogues this time? Scarlet asked.
Mr. Patel answered in a blue tone, “They have allied with the wizards,” he answered. Xavier's brows frowned listening to this.
“Wizards?” He questioned,
“Yes. Wizards and wolves have never been on the best terms, but we have never meddled in each other's world. We don’t know why they have allied against the Crimson Moon pack.” Mr. Patel answered and Xavier’s jaw clenched. “The pack fought firmly and were able to save themselves.” Listening to this, Xavier and Scarlet beamed, “ —but the pack had been completely demolished. It will take up to a few months for the pack to recover. The wizards left the Night Walkers in between the war — without the wizards, they were nothing in front of the Crimson Stone. The war ended yesterday and Hilmand told me to inform you both,” he said,
“We should leave immediately,” Xavier ran towards the stairs, but Mr. Patel’s booming voice stopped him in his track.
“Both of you need to stay here for the time being,” he said,
Xavier took long strides towards him— Mr. Patel got up calmly, “The wizards left but the pack is still in danger. Some members heard that the wizards were here to harm the pack's heir. If you go back now— the Alphas are afraid that you’ll be their main target and they can’t protect you in this hazardous condition of the pack. They asked you to stay until you are both able to shift. In the meantime, the Crimson Moon pack will rise once again and they have sworn to kill the wizards who are hell bound to overpower us,”
“How long do we need to stay here?” Scarlet asked in a low tone.
“A few weeks— can take a couple of months or a year,” he replied.
Xavier's fist clenched in rage, his knuckles turning white before he loosened his grip and nodded in defeat, “I can do nothing for the pack, can I?” He asked.
Mr. Patel put his hand on his shoulder, “Protect yourself. That will be enough,” He patted him twice before placing his hat on his head. “The Alphas ordered me to look after you both till you’re in the human world. Both of you will stay here and continue your studies.” He said,
“How?” Scarlet asked,
“I will submit your admission forms to the school Sal goes to as per his orders— both of you need to pass a test to get admission,” he said. “Both of you need to adjust to this new lifestyle as soon as possible. If you have any questions and need any help— we’re just a few blocks away,” he said and walked towards the floor.
Scarlet followed him while Xavier was rooted to his spot, “I will be visiting you both a lot, and Xavier—” Xavier's attention turned towards him, “Stormy days come and go, this is a part of life. Do not be so hard on yourself kid,” he told him. Xavier stayed quiet watching Mr. Patel leaves through the door.
He stopped in the foyer and turned to look at Scarlet who was watching him leave, “Sal will be here to visit you.” He patted her head and uttered, “Take care of yourself and Xavier, he is being too hard on himself. Help him adjust here. Everything will be fine.” He told her and she nodded. “I have great expectations from you, kid.” He patted her head one last time before leaving.
Scarlet entered the living room and found Xavier in a daze. She got startled when he suddenly began to run upstairs, “Where are you going?” She yelled and he stopped in the middle of the stairs.
He turned to look back at her, “To take a shower, wanna join?” He asked and Scarlet was too dumbfounded to answer. She thought he would be upset or something, but he looked fine.
Xavier rolled his eyes at her and continued ascending the stairs.

At night, Scarlet was arranging the dishes for dinner when she heard Xavier's heavy footsteps descending the stairs. He was looking alive and more energetic than the previous days they had spent together in this house.
Scarlet couldn’t help but ask him, “Are you alright?”
His gaze met hers, “Better than ever,” He shrugged lightly and asked, “What’s for dinner?” He asked.
“Take out and Sal is coming over to guide us about the terms and conditions of the human world.” She explained to him.
Xavier rolled his eyes at Sal’s mention, “What’s new to know? You’re just making an excuse to let him come over.”
Scarlet bites her lower lip in annoyance, “He’s my friend and a pack member. I don’t need an excuse to call him, he has the right to come over whenever he wants. Furthermore, we’ll be in the same school in just a couple of days, so you had better be nice to him.”
Xavier raised his brows at her, “Don’t try to be my mom,” he retorted.
Xavier got annoyed when he saw her putting her hand on her hip, passing him a bored look, just like his mother used to, “Trust me, I am not. By the way, I tried to resist but I have to ask: What is this total new energy you are radiating? What’s gotten into you suddenly?” She inquired.
He sneered and walked to her slowly. “We won the war. Sure, there is a threat, but once the pack recovers, I can finally go back and shred the enemies into pieces. I’ll be able to shift and lead the pack. Unlike our fathers, I will demolish the Night Walkers once and for all and then we will be considered the strongest pack,” He bends to Scarlet’s eye, leaning closer and closer to her face.
Scarlet poked her finger on his cheek to push his face in the opposite direction, “You still sound like a five-year-old Xavier, grow up.” She said,
Xavier stood to his full height, his lips pressed together firmly before he spoke, “Aren't you being too friendly with me suddenly? Nothing has changed between us. Just because we’re living in the same space doesn’t mean that we’re friends, so you had better stay within your limits.”
Scarlet was speechless hearing this, “Are you bipolar or psycho?” She asked. She could never understand this drastic change of behavior towards her. One minute he is all fun and talkative, and the next second, the most obnoxious guy she has ever encountered. She loathed him for his existence.
The bell rang indicating that someone was at the door, “Your long lost pal is here,” Xavier commented and lay on the couch lazily. She closed her eyes to turn his voice out and went to open the door with a big smile on her face.
She opened the door swiftly. A dusky-toned guy was standing in front of her with a bouquet in his hand. A smile that can blind a person was expressed on his face. He was awestruck the moment his eyes laid on the redheaded beauty, “Hi, Scarlet.” He uttered and Scarlet couldn’t help but squeal as she welcomed her best friend in.
