Chapter 9
“Hi,” Sal uttered when he noticed Xavier’s presence in the living room. Xavier curved his lips in a fake smile and nodded lightly. Sal's attention diverted towards Scarlet, “These are for you,” He handed the bouquet to Scarlet.
Scarlet beamed in delight, she smelled the flowers and thanked Sal, “I’ll go and put them in a vase. Make yourself comfortable,” She said and went into the kitchen.
There was silence, an awkward one between Sal and Xavier. Sal made himself comfortable on the couch, none of them exchanged any words and looked around. “So. . .” Sal tried to make a conversation. “How have you been?” He asked.
Xavier's face scrunched in annoyance, “You don’t need to make small talk. Let’s sit in silence till she’s back,”
Sal rolled his eyes and sighed loudly, “Still a douchebag,” he whispered, but Xavier heard him.
“What did you say?” He asked him, his tone a bit threatening.
Sal gave him a bored look. Xavier’s tone failed to intimidate him, “Nothing,” he said and sat straight.
The doorbell rang again and Scarlet dashed to open the door, “I got it. Must be the food delivery guy,”
Xavier mimicked her high-pitched tone, stood up, and walked to the door, “I got it. Why don’t you give your attention to your beloved friend?” He remarked and opened the door.
“Then serve it on the table too. Sal and I will be joining you in a minute. Thanks.” Scarlet took advantage. “Come Sal. Let’s go talk in my room. We need to catch up on a lot of things.” She said, Xavier's eyes widened when he saw Scarlet’s outstretched hand for Sal to hold. The doorbell ringing got tuned out for Xavier until he saw Scarlet’s lips moving.
“Xavier. What are you doing? Get the door.” She snapped and Xavier got back to his senses.
He opened the door, got the package, and shut it. When he turned around, Sal and Scarlet were already gone, leaving him to set the table for them.
“That guy always gets on my nerves,” He snapped and opened the boxes of food one by one. “Oh, look, she ordered sushi— because Sal loves sushi!” He mimicked Scarlet’s high-pitched tone once again.
He turned around and found Sal and an amused Scarlet in front of him, “I do love sushi. Thanks for remembering it, my man,” Sal commented with a poker face, and Scarlet couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Xavier felt the heat rushing to his cheeks, “Don’t forget I am your future Alpha, so keep your tone in check with me,” Xavier's voice boomed in the kitchen with authority. The once playful aura died down.
“Xavier!” Scarlet snapped.
“You keep your mouth shut,” he snapped back.
Sal stood in front of Scarlet. His body shields Scarlet from Xavier, “Dude, calm down.”
“He is here to help us get adjusted to this life. Instead of being thankful to him, you’re insulting him,” Scarlet stood up for Sal.
“I can’t believe I am stuck with you both here.” He whispered, his eyes meeting Scarlet’s gaze. Both of them shot daggers at each other with their eyes. “Don’t forget the title I hold,” he warned both of them.
Sal came in between Xavier and Scarlet, “I got it. I’ll respect the title you hold. Let’s just end this argument, alright?” He asked, but Scarlet and Xavier were still glaring at each other. If looks could kill both, they would be six feet under, rolling in their graves.

After finishing their dinner in silence, the three of them gathered in a room to discuss their living conditions.
Sal clapped his hands, “So, both of you will keep your real names because the documents have been submitted with your real identity. Both of you will be going to Wild West High school where I am currently studying. We will be in our senior year. Living in a human world is no different than living in our world. The only difference is that humans are ordinary. Also, try to keep a low profile and hide your abilities,”
“Got it, but what about our living arrangements?” Scarlet asked.
“What about them?” Xavier inquired.
Scarlet didn’t bother to look at him and continued, “He and I are living together. Even if we want, we can not pretend that we don’t know each other. What if someone from school gets to know that he and I live together? Surely, I don't want to be associated as his girlfriend or lover,” Scarlet asked. Xavier couldn't help but notice the venom in her tone.
Sal made a thinking face, “I have talked about this with Dad. He suggested that you live with us and Xavier can stay here,” He smiled and Xavier's brows frowned.
“Can’t happen. The Alphas gave her responsibility to me even if I didn’t want to take it. She’ll stay here,” Xavier said in an authoritative tone. “If someone questions our relationship, we’ll tell them that we’re siblings,” Xavier suggested.
“I don’t see any problem in that,” Scarlet agreed with him for the first time in forever. Their gaze met for a nanosecond — it shifted back to Sal the next moment.
“Can’t do that. Your documents have been submitted. Different surnames and different parents,” Sal shrugged his shoulders, “The best solution is that Scarlet stays with us,” He smiled. Suddenly Xavier felt unsettled by this suggestion.
"We can tell them we're cousins," Scarlet chimed in. “But I don’t see a problem in staying with you too,” Scarlet clapped her hands once and got off the floor.
"Then it's settled," Sal announced.
“Also, dad told me to tell you both that the pack is fine and is on a speedy recovery. The threat is still out there but the pack is doing better than before,” he said.
“That’s a relief,” Scarlet uttered. Xavier got up silently and ascended the stairs, he went into his room with a loud bang on his door.
“He hasn’t changed a bit,” Sal commented, his eyes glued to the second story.
“ Worst than ever.” Scarlet waved her hand in the air.
Sal's chocolate eyes met Scarlet’s. She smiles and he returns it by standing, hugging her, “I missed you, Scar.” He uttered.
“I have missed you more,” She hugged him back tightly.
Sal’s arms were wrapped around her waist, “You smell nice,” he whispered in her ear, and the moment became intimidating for Scarlet suddenly. She parted away from him immediately.
She got a bit awkward and laughed nervously, “Thanks. By the way, don’t forget to give me your number.” She said,
Sal ran his hand through his hair, bit his lips, and passed her a cheeky smile, “Tomorrow we will go shopping to get all the things you need. Be ready by 12. I’ll come to pick you up,” he said, and she nodded lightly.
“I’ll be leaving now. Once we begin to live together, we’ll catch up on everything,” He rubbed his thumb in a circling manner on the back of Scarlet’s hands. He said goodbye, kissed her cheek and left.
She crossed her arms, hugged herself --- sighed loudly, and looked upstairs towards Xavier's room. She climbed the stairs and stopped in front of his room. Why am I standing here?
The door opened and Xavier almost bumped into her, which made Scarlet almost lose her balance from the force, but before she could, Xavier caught her small waist and she clenched his t-shirt tightly for support.
“Why were you standing like a creep outside my room?” He inquired, “Your new roommate and best friend left?”
Scarlet sighed and left the grip on his t-shirt. Xavier loosened his grip on her, their gaze still connected. “He left and I wanted to ask if you needed anything. I’m going to my room to get some sleep,” She asked in a low tone.
“Why are you asking? You’re not here to take care of me. Why don’t you pack your bags and get out of here as soon as possible so that I don’t need to look at your stupid face every time I leave the room.” He snapped and Scarlet was offended.
“Do you think I fancy living with you? You have no idea how grateful I am to finally get out of here. Finally, a couple of days when I do not have to see your stupid, ugly face,” She poked her index finger into his chest.
“Are you sure you have done your Lasik surgery because undoubtedly you are still blind if you call this,” He pointed at his face, “ — ugly.”
She forced a smile on her face, “Glad, you admitted that you are stupid indeed,” She snapped— went into her room and slammed the door in his face.
