Sophia 05

“Y-you… you did what?” I wanted to be sure I heard everything correctly. And that I wasn’t hallucinating her words. A frown entered mother’s face and she got even closer to me. “Why are you acting like you weren’t aware about it, Kayla? In fact, you suggested it to me. Sooner or later, Sophia would talk. You saw how close she instantly got with him in your absence.” She scoffed. “Even if she doesn’t talk, Alpha Lucien is a smart man. He’d figure it out as long as she is around. And you don’t want that happening. He would kill us for lying to him.” She patted my head, whispering softly next to my ear. “I know you’re scared but sweetheart, I’m doing all of this for you. Sophia will be forgotten and soon no one will ever know that the person who saved the Alpha eight months ago was not you, but her.” She finally drew out of my space while my whole body was still frozen and my heart was shattering into a million pieces. “Now clean those eyes and look pretty again for your future husband, will you?” she smiled widely and when I looked at her, I couldn’t stop myself from bursting into a fit of painful laughter. It felt as though a million nails were piercing right into my chest. “Is Sophia really your daughter?” I found myself asking even before I could stop the words and before I could retract them back, mother had answered. “She is a worthless daughter to me.” … a worthless daughter. The words replayed in my mind again and again. I’d always known I was worthless to her but hearing it come from her mouth like this felt… very hurtful. I couldn’t describe the feeling in my chest. It was a mixture of hurt, rage, anger and hate. “Good.” I whispered. “It’s good you no longer have a worthless daughter.” I could feel the hate rolling off of me as I slowly stood to my feet, images of the details of that accident flipping through my mind like a movie. I could still hear the loud deafening honk of that truck. I could still see my shattered front glass and my blood pooling around me. I could still feel the fear I felt at the moment of that accident before I lost my consciousness. And all of that... all of that was planned by my own mother and sister? My makeup was ruined and something inside of me had been broken forever. I felt so pathetic and so worthless like she said. “That’s my good girl.” Mother touched my face, a tender look in her eyes. “I’ll call in the makeup artist to touch up your makeup a bit before you’ll be called out to begin the marriage rites. Okay?” I nodded my head, releasing a breath before I turned my face away from her, towards the mirror, staring at the reflection of my sister whom I now hated so much. Wherever she is, wherever her soul had gone. I wished she’d never return. As the make up artist filled the room and they began to touch up my make up, I couldn’t help wondering about what had happened eight months ago. I was coming back from meeting my human friend, Isla, when I bumped into a set of thugs. And no, they weren’t your regular thugs. They were werewolves and with the scent they had on them, I could instantly tell they belonged to the night walker’s pack. A notorious and rebellious pack none of both races would ever want to trifle with. They do not follow the wolf laws, they kill humans as they see fit despite the law forbidding us from doing that. And the werewolf council seemed to be unable to do anything about them. Usually, I would be on my way and not involve myself in matters like that but not when a dying woman crawled her way around and grabbed my leg with her bloodied hands. Her gaze was desperately pleading with me to help not her, but someone else who was unconscious and she had hidden under a huge truck, away from the night walker’s men. “P-please help him… I beg you… t-take him somewhere safe.” These were the last words she said before I saw her life leave her eyes and she collapsed, dead. At that time, I panicked and almost chickened out. Involving myself in the business of the night walker pack was like walking into death with your own legs. But at the end, seeing the already dead woman caused my heart to ache. I quickly helped move the man whom I assumed was her son from under the truck. He was a big man, quite heavy and bloody. He had a deep cut on his chest that was bleeding out. It was too huge for his wolf to heal so he kept losing blood. I had picked a medical store’s lock, treated his injury and left him there, knowing he’d be safe and awake in a moment. Four months later, I heard the news of the night walker’s pack being completely massacred and wiped out from the face of the earth, causing me to think about that incident again. And two months after, who would have expected the man I had saved to show up at my door? Not just that, but I found out he was Alpha Lucien. One of the most powerful and respected Alpha in crescent city. He was looking for the person who had saved him and traced it to my home. I recognized him instantly and made the mistake of telling mother everything. Mother used the opportunity to replace me with Kayla. And ever since then, I’d never known peace. Mother threatened to disown me if I do not cooperate with her and so I did. Wasn’t that enough? She still had to go as far as planning my death. As fate would have it, I met the strange girl on my way last night. Now thinking about it, she didn’t seem that ordinary. It felt as though, she knew what was going to happen when she bugged me to buy her item and when I picked the wish goddess’s statue, she looked at me strangely and said it was a good choice. I needed to find her as soon as I could. She was the only one who could explain how I ended up in my sister’s body. “Kayla,” the door opened again and Iris walked in, along with all of Kayla’s friends whom I had driven away earlier. “Let’s go. Your mother has sent us to get you.” I simply nodded as the makeup artists finished working on my face. My skin was flawless as I stared into the mirror before Iris started to lead me out, along with the rest of Kayla’s friends. Flower petals lined the path I walked, the Christmas trees were blinking at every corners and the chattering hall became quiet the moment I entered. I didn’t expect this much people. Half of them were people I didn’t recognize. My eyes found Alpha Lucien’s very quickly. He was standing next to the elders who would join us. He looked so handsome yet formidable. His gaze was lethal yet they had softened instantly the moment they met mine. No, Kayla’s. I needed to remind myself that it wasn’t me he felt this way towards but my sister. And yet, I still couldn’t help getting lost in his emerald eyes, lost in my own world. My heart was beating crazily once again as I kept wondering if I was doing the right thing with everything that had happened to me but I knew even if I decide to not marry him today, I’d still be forced to. Mother would make sure. I could only save myself the trouble. I didn’t hear whatever the elder said. I was only back to reality again when Alpha Lucien carried my hands in his. The elder handed him a small dagger which he used to gently cut my thumb. Blood flowed out quickly as he also cut his and we joined our thumbs swearing the oath that joined us in matrimony. “I, Alpha Lucien of the Summer pack accept Kayla Hudson as my chosen mate, wife and Luna to the Summer pack. Until death do us part.” I repeated the oath with my name, completing the ceremony but forgetting the most important thing that would come next. The elder smiled at us, before he looked at Lucien and nodded to him. “Now, you may place your marks on each other.” My eyes widened instantly and shock filled my whole body when Alpha Lucien pulled me into his arms without thinking twice. I saw how his canines elongated before they dug into my skin, causing my toes to curl under my gown as I tried hard not to protest. This… me and my sister’s fiancé whom I had been in love with. I never thought he’d be marking me in my sister’s body someday. But here we are.
