My heart shook as I stared at the lavishly decorated hall meant for my sister’s wedding. I had just stepped out of the Maybach, arriving at the wedding venue. Mother was barking orders to the omega maids as they scrambled to hold the tail of my dress behind me. I’d never felt so beautiful even if it wasn’t my face. I have never felt so important either and being treated with so much care like a fragile doll whom everyone was afraid to break.
It felt… strange and nice. I felt like a princess for once in my life. Mother—mother was looking at me with so much pride and love, her eyes even glistened with tears and she nodded for me to walk inside.
My heart shook as I stared into the hall. Could I really go through with this? No matter how good this felt, I was still an imposter in my sister’s body. I wasn’t the bride meant to be treated like this.
I thought about coming clean to Mom as I walked into the hall but how should I even start? Would she even believe me if I told her that right now, I wasn’t her precious daughter Kayla but her unwanted daughter, Sophia?
Plagued by my own thoughts, I almost jumped when a group of girls approached me. I instantly recognized them as Kayla’s friends. Three of them. One with burnt brown hair. I knew her name was Iris. The second was Lyra and the third Cleo.
“You look so beautiful, Kayla. Oh my goddess!” Cleo acted dramatic, putting her hands under her chin as she stared at me, appearing lovestruck. Iris touched my dress, her gaze accessing the fabric before her eyes lit up at once as if she had figured something out.
“Wait! This… this was made by Saint Lorenz, the famous designer.”
Now I had no idea who that is. I’d never worn any designer clothes so I had no idea about any of them but with Iris’s reaction, I could tell he was someone famous and almost unreachable.
“Are you kidding me? Alpha Lucien really got it for you?” Lyra and Cleo began to touch the dress and while I was uncomfortable, I didn’t know how to react to this. “Man, he must really love you.”
“It looks so expensive.”
“It smells like money.”
The three giggled, escorting me to a room, away from the crowd of people who had already arrived. I didn’t see Alpha Lucien anywhere and Mom was too busy, I wanted to ask her if I had returned from where she had sent me last night.
“Are you okay, Kayla?” Iris asked me and my attention was brought back towards them.
“I am fine. Just… a bit worried.”
I saw how Iris, Cleo and Lyra exchanged glances before they all came closer to me and whispered.
“Is it about Alpha Lucien? You told him about your brat of a sister, didn’t you? What was his reaction?”
Brat of a sister? If I wasn’t guessing wrong, then that was me.
My eyes narrowed as I stared at them, quite confused. “What was I supposed to tell him?”
“You were supposed to show him the picture and how your crazy sister was into him and would stop at nothing to hurt you.”
I bit the insides of my lips and rubbed my sweaty palms together, trying to hide the shock that went through me. Kayla… did that? I remembered the picture Alpha Lucien had talked about. I had asked her and she said she knew nothing about it. I automatically assumed Mother did it because she hated me.
Now… now the story was different. I tried to gather my emotions and looked at them, forming my words carefully.
“But… Sophia hasn’t tried to hurt me. Why would I do that to her?”
“Why else? Because you hate her.” Lyra shrugged. Her words caused me to release a shaky breath. I didn’t know I was pinching my fingers so hard until I injured myself. Blood flowed out from the top of my forefinger and I expected it to heal itself but nothing happened. It kept flowing out and I couldn’t tell if the injury was what brought tears to my eyes or if it was the discovery that I had just made.
Kayla… hated me? It seemed almost unbelievable. I remembered how she had saved me from facing Mom’s wrath countless times, how she always looked at me kindly and always felt sorry for me. She was like an angel in my book but now, now I didn’t know what to think.
Was she pretending to like me all this while?
“Kayla, are you okay?” Iris asked and I shook my head, finally letting the tears fall.
My heart hardened in my chest as I let my emotions take control, hate filling me instantly. “Leave.” I ordered through gritted teeth. “All of you, leave right now!”
Shocked filled their faces as they stood one by one. Iris tried to approach me but I turned my back on her, waiting until I heard them sigh and they left one after the door. The door closed behind them and just when I turned around, it opened again.
Mother walked in, glancing at the backs of Kayla’s friends, looking puzzled.
Just the right person I wanted to see right now.
“Sweetheart, what happened? Did you have a fight with your friends?”
I didn’t bother answering her question. I took two steps closer to her, my heart pounding in my chest and gaze hardening as I asked her. “Where is Sophia?”
“Huh?” she arched a brow as if she didn’t know what I was talking about her. “Why are you asking about her?”
“You sent her out to the city last night.” I started, clenching my fists beside me as I asked. “Did she return?”
As I asked this, the memory of the accident flashed in my head. I saw how my blood had flowed under my crushed car. Still, I almost expected an answer like. ‘she is safe and resting in her room’ but of course nothing like that came.
Mother sighed and shook her head. “She didn’t return.”
“Aren’t you going to find her?”
“Why should I?”
I paused, my eyes widening in shock as I stared at my mother. At moments like this, I wondered if she actually sees me as her daughter. She wasn’t worried at all that I didn’t return home last night. She didn’t think for once that something must’ve happened to me. All she cared about was Kayla.
Kayla, Kayla, Kayla!
My heart broke into tiny unrepairable pieces.
“Alpha Lucien is already here. You should focus on your wedding and later, I’ll tell you the good news.”
“I’m not marrying him.” I uttered and saw how Mom’s face immediately turned from excitement to dread.
“Don’t play with me, Kayla.” She said, sternly. “Don’t say jokes like that on a day like this.”
“It’s not a joke.” I told her, making sure she saw the seriousness in my eyes. “I won’t marry him until you find my sister!”
“How do I find her when she is dead?” her calm demeanor didn’t match the words she just spitted out.
My whole body shook in both fear and shock as I staggered back, looking at her. I was… dead?
How did she know? Why was she so calm despite knowing that? How come she was still going through with this wedding despite knowing that?
My head spun, my legs went weak and I quickly grabbed the dressing table behind me for support.
“Why do you look so shocked, Kayla?” she came closer to me, a frown entering her face. “I did exactly what you suggested. I got rid of her myself.”
My jaw dropped, the tears fell freely and finally, I couldn’t hold my weight any longer as I collapsed to the floor, unable to believe the words I’d just hear her utter.
