Chapter 8: The backfire

818 Words
The party was buzzing with excitement, a sea of colorful lights and animated conversations filling the room. Sadie and Serena moved through the crowd, their eyes fixed on the makeshift stage where Jake was about to make his entrance. This was their chance to get back at him. Sadie’s hands trembled slightly as she clutched the remote. The plan was to play a fake video, supposedly capturing Jake mistreating a group of less fortunate people. They’d fabricated the footage to look convincing, hoping it would humiliate him in front of everyone. The crowd quieted as Jake took the stage, beaming with self-satisfaction. Sadie nodded to Serena, who hit the play button on the remote hidden in her bag. The screen flickered to life, showing the video they had so carefully edited. But instead of the reaction they had anticipated, the footage revealed something entirely different. It was clear that the video had been manipulated—it showed Jake’s supposed cruelty in a way that seemed absurd and exaggerated. The crowd’s reaction was mixed; some laughed, while others were confused or skeptical. Jake’s confident smile remained unwavering. As the video ended, he took the microphone and addressed the crowd. “Interesting choice of entertainment,” he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “But really, all this effort just to embarrass me? You’re going to have to do better than that.” Jake then turned and leaned closer to Sadie, his voice lowering but carrying a chilling edge. “All in all, one day you will be mine.” With those unsettling words, Jake straightened up and walked away, leaving Sadie and Serena to deal with the aftermath. The crowd began to disperse, their laughter and whispers a stark reminder of their failed attempt. As they left the party, Serena’s frustration was palpable. “We’ve got to figure something else out. This isn’t over.” Sadie felt the weight of their failure heavy on her shoulders. When she got home, she immediately decided to call her mom. She was exhausted and needed to hear a comforting voice. Sitting alone in her room, she took a deep breath and dialed her mom’s number. After a few rings, her mom’s familiar, soothing voice answered. “Hi, Sweetie. How’s it going?” “Hi, Mom,” Sadie said, trying to keep her voice steady. “I need to talk to you about what happened tonight.” Her mom’s tone turned concerned. “Oh? What happened?” Sadie recounted the evening’s events, describing how their plan to embarrass Jake had backfired and his chilling response. She detailed the mixed reactions from the crowd and how Jake’s confident demeanor only made things worse. Her mom listened patiently. “I’m so sorry, honey. Sadie’s voice was hesitant as she asked, “How is Dad? I haven’t heard anything new for a while.” Her mom sighed. “Your dad is still in prison, and there’s been no significant change in his situation. The company has been struggling, which is part of why you moved to the countryside with your grandma. It’s been a tough time for all of us.” Sadie nodded, even though her mom couldn’t see her. “I understand. I just feel like I need to do something about Jake. It’s like he’s getting away with everything, and I can't just let it slide.” Her mom’s voice softened with concern. “I get it, Sadie. But sometimes, it’s better to avoid getting into more trouble, especially when things are already difficult. Just be careful and think things through.” “I will,” Sadie assured her. “Thanks for listening, Mom. I’ll figure out a way to handle this.” They ended the call with a few more words of comfort. Sadie hung up, feeling a mixture of resolve and relief. Her mom’s advice had been helpful, but her determination to confront Jake and resolve the situation remained unshaken. The battle was far from over, and Sadie knew she needed to find a way to fight back without losing herself in the process. She called Serena and thanked her but. she was still aware of school the next day and they were about writing a test she was tired but she knew she needed to prepare for the exams but she was to tired as she laid on her bed scrolling through her phone she saw a message from an unknown number that said that she shouldn't worry about the test and the message also talked about liking the way she was playing hard to get. At this Sadie became scared and she couldn't sleep all she could think about was Jake he might have been evil but then she thought he was cute though but she immediately removed that thought from her mind knowing he was the enemy but at the same time she wondered what he wanted with her.
