Chapter 5

I ran down the hall. This place felt like a night mare. I wanted to wake up so bad. Please someone just pinch me and wake me up. I wanted to be back in Pascallia, my home. Where everything came alive at night and moon flowers bloomed. The Moon was always the brightest in Pascallia then anywhere else on this retched land. The ache in my heart felt raw, like I had skid across rock exposing my burning flesh underneath. I sat in one of the windows in the hall. Which you really couldn't call a window sense it had no glass. It was just open and wide enough for you to sit on. As I gazed down below at the rest of Bane's pack, my chest tightened as I held my knees close to me. They all seemed to be without a care in the world. Chatting happily with their friends. Families carrying newborn pups. Did they know their beloved Alpha destroyed a family? My family and burned down a home as easy as breathing air? My nails dug into my palms but I welcomed the pain. It was the only feeling I had that was real here. I couldn't bare to look at them. They made me sick, how could you condone such behavior? They were wolves after all, their way of life was different than mine but the same principles applied. The head of my Coven was always female. Never male. We cherished our leaders because they were also our mentors. In my Coven; The Blue Moon Coven, my mother was the Crescent Priestess. Which is what we called the 'Head Leader' of our Coven. My hand subconsciously moved to the middle of my chest. My finger traced the outline of my Coven mark. Ours was a raven silhouette in the middle of a full moon. I personally loved ravens. They saw things others couldn't see about a person. A Raven was seen as a blessing of good fortune in my Coven. I never got to pick my raven. The fire started so fast that day, all the Ravens flew away leaving behind only their feathers to be burned to ashes. Although, some may have returned... A thought slipped into my mind as my heart fluttered, I hurried off to my room and grabbed my blue cloak. I knew it was a bad idea. I couldn't help but wonder if any survived and if so I could at least save one... I glided down the stairs sticking to the shadows so no one would see me. I could see the castle gate entrance ahead of me. No one seemed to be guarding it. I cautiously made my way over, when a voice catch my attention. Actually now it sounded like two voices, it was coming from an alley-way right next to the gate entrance. I rushed by hoping whoever it was didn't seem me. All I needed was someone to alert Bane I was gone again, but a glimpse of red hair catch my eye. I stuck close to the wall and peeked over. Ferrah looked like she was entangled with a stranger but the long brown hair Ferrah had her hands in told me it wasn't a stranger at all. It was Finn. I gasped but quickly covered my mouth. Wasn't Ferrah Bane's Mate? They looked like savages mauling each other in a rage passion. I quickly looked away. They were so engrossed with each other they didn't notice me. Now was my time to slip away. I rushed to the entrance and bolted out the gates before they closed. I ran as fast as I could. He wouldn't catch me this time. I would keep running, he eventually would stop looking for me if I ran far enough, but there was one stop I needed to make, Pascallia. My legs picked up their speed with anticipation. It was right on the edge of Bane's land. I would get there by dawn if I kept up the pace. I could almost smell the new blooms of the moon flowers. My heart ached to see my home again, even though I knew it was nothing but ashes now. I still wanted to see it.  Dawn was now approaching, I could now see the end of Bane's territory that was the line of Pine trees near the lake. Pascallia was just beyond that lake. My heart fluttered as I quickly made my way passed the lake. My mother use to call this Lake Monarch because of the butterflies that surrounded its edges but now they were gone. As I passed the Lake I stopped right before my Coven's entrance. My chest hurt, I wanted to throw up. The smell of burning wood still lingered here. I covered my nose with my hand. My home was now a blackened scab on the otherwise beautiful green landscape. I leaned over buried my hand within the soot covered dirt. I could still feel them, their spirits lingered here. As I looked up a white fuzzy foot catch my eye. I dashed over to it carefully pulling it from the rubble. It was my brother's white furred teddy bear. My hands started to shake, I fell to my knees. I couldn't hold back the deep saddens I felt. My brother was so young, he didn't deserve this, none of them did. I held his teddy bear to my chest. "I'm so sorry bud...I'll take care of teddy for you, I promise." I could remember his smile with his tiny little dimples. The way he shoved blackberries in his mouth when mother was making her blackberry pie. I started to sob knowing I would never see that smile again- Crack. Caw Caw! My heart jumped at the sound I'd been waiting for. I stood up looking above at the burned bare tree branches and there on a lone branch was a beautiful black Raven. It was staring down at me c*****g its head. I wiped my tears away. "Hello there little one, are you alone too?" The Raven c****d his head the other way then flew down and landed at my feet. He looked up at me again. I bent down in front of him. "You know we both came back for a reason, don't you think?" Caw! He responded and hopped closer to me. "Well, you don't have to be alone anymore." I reached out my forearm to him. He stared at it for a second then hopped on me. I slowly stroked his head down to his back. "I'll take care of you little one. You know what, you need a name." The Raven c****d his head once again. "Do you like Burnard?" Caw! I chuckled "Alright, your name is Burnard and I am your owner." I took out a moonstone and whispered to it. It glowed in my hands. "Burnard will you accept me and be my familiar?" Burnard looked into my stone as if he was looking into my soul. He then closed his little eyes an leaned his head into the light of the stone. As he did the light of the stone grew brighter. Once the light faded away it revealed Burnard's color had changed. His once jet black feathers had turned pure white. "Well that's new." I said to him, I had never seen this happened when someone asked a raven to be their familiar. I guess Burnard was special just like I thought he was. Burnard spread out his wings, his talons were still black, they dug into my forearm as he pretended to fly in place. I smiled at him, we both came back for a reason and maybe it wasn't the same but whatever it was, it brought us together and I couldn't of been more comforted by that.
