The Scent of Danger

1088 Words
Under the dark sky, surrounded by the silence of the night, Elaine stood in the middle of the road alone. Staring at the pooled blood on the ground she too a deep brath and looked up at te dark sky. The moon was covered with thick clouds threatening her that a shower was coming. “i need to get back fast.” She whispered to herself and gathered her chaotic thoughts. Shaking off the remaining blood on her sword before sheathing it. Throwing a last glance at the spot over her shoulder, Elaine walked away without a burdened mind. However peaceful was the moment she experienced just now, Elaine had no way of knowing that it was a prelude to a disaster that she ahd never experienced before and would never want to experience in the future. In the darkest area away from the battlefield, a woman with white hair and extremely pail skin stood in silence as her feline-like eyes narrowed on Elaine as if a gun’s target lock. ‘She had grown stronger than before. That might be a problem. I need to inform them now.’ The woman thought to herself and with only the sound of the wind not a trace of her could be found it was not even like a bubble bursting like it was not even there. But more stealthily and deadly. The sun was about to rise when Elaine got back to the cabin and just like how Milo does everytime shetakes off to fight, he had been waiting anxiously for her at the door. Seeing her father fidgeting out of worry for her made Elaine smile softly. Although she had n recollections about her childhood she was certain that her father had raised her on his own after her mother died. With every step Elaine takes, the dry leaves were crunching underneath her feet. Noticing her movements and the sound of it, Milo looked over to her direction and in an instant his face lightened and relief washedover his face. He rushed to her side and grabbed the sword out of her hands as carefully as possible trying not to worsen any pain that she might have gained during her fight with the vampire. “Are you alright? You are not hurt are you?” Milo checked her body and a sigh of relief came out of his lips when he saw that there were no cuts in her new uniform. However, his relief was short lived when Elaine gripped his arm which was checking her out. Elaine’s grip was weak and felt desperate. Her knees buckled and her body would have completely fell over if not for Milo catching her just in time. “What happened?! Are you really hurt? But I don’t see any injuries-” Milo’s voice stopped and he did not manage to finish his sentence. With Elaine leaning unto him and him supporting her back he had felt and saw the massive wound on her back. HIs hand had felt hot and sticky with the blood continuously gushing out of the terrible wound. “T-there were t-two of them.” Elaine still managed to speak before her consciousness had entirely left her. Milo’s eyes went wide after hearing the words come out of Elaine’s weak voice. He had initially investigated this case before dispatching Elaine to defeat the vampire, but after knowing that he was wrong about the information he gathered and put Elaine at risk had taken a huge toll in his mind. However, Milo could no continue to indulge himself in regret and blame himself nonstop for being the reason of Elaine’s injury because he needed to help her ease the pain first. As Milo carefully carried her inside the cabin, he had noticed another strange thing about her. Usually, Elaine would come home covered in blood from the fight, but this time as he checked her for any potential injuries, he had not seen any gruesome blood from her new uniform. Milo’s eyes narrowed and he stared at Elaine’s face before cleaning her wound. The frown did not disappear as he did so. ‘She should have healed by now. What the hell happened back there?’ Milo thought to himself as his frown deepened. He needed to investigate the scenario that happened before reporting back to him. Milo needed to decided whether to tell him everything or keep the other parts to himself even with the cost of his life. ‘I’ve grown too old and too attached.’ Milo shut his eyes before opening them back and stroking the stray har away from Elaine’s face. ‘This child has grown so much in past years.’ Milo could not stop a smile creeping to his face as he recalled his earlier days with Elaine. “i just hope you don’t get hurt too mucb when that time comes. I’m afraid that it’s coming faster than it ever did before.” Milo whispered to himself before finishing up patching Elaine’s wounds and leaving the cabin. He headed towards the warehouse with the bloodied sword in his hands. Heading straight to his working table he started to polish the sword. “There were two vampires and Elaine was heavily injured. Don’t let another one in before she gets fully healed.” Milo started to speak. There was no one around. But he knew all too well that he was here waiting for his report. And soon enough, someone responded to him. “Ah, is that so. Well, that is a surprise.” The voice sounded dark and cold. And even though he was showing his concern and thoughts through his words it’s tone did not match the meaning of his words even for a little bit. “But Milo, since when have you started to order me around?” His tone changed and his voice grew colder. “I’m suggesting. If you ever want your plan of luring the Lord out then do as I say. And since when have I become your servant that I am not even allowed to voice out my opinions?” Milo second and a few seconds of silence descended upon the two men. “You’re right. It was my mistake. I shall take your suggestion into consideration.” The voice sounded more distant as the sentence neared its end. Milo sighed after noticing that he had already left. ‘You still haven’t given up on your impossible goal.’ Milo’s forehead creased as a distant memory popped in his mind.
