CHAPTER 6
RAINA’S POV
I was very nervous. As nervous as bees whose nest had just been disturbed momentarily disturbed by a snot nosed kid.
All I wanted was for that day to end and probably the next and the one after that. Ethel had promised that he would come for me. He had sworn never to let me go. That was the only promise I was hanging on to at the moment. I just knew that deep down, staying here with Alpha Declan was like playing with a ticking time bomb and when the moment came, it would explode in my face.
Moon goddess please save me from his wrath. I don't want to be his latest victim.
A knock on the door made me jump off the bed, my heart raced and sweat beads appeared on my forehead and neck.
“Who…who’s there?” I stammered, peering at the door.
“King Declan sent us to help you get dressed for the evening, lady Raina.” A gentle, feminine voice replied and I sighed in relief.
I’d completely forgotten about them. If I was to survive the few days before Alpha Ethel came for me, then I would have to start remembering every word that Declan uttered.
I opened the door and stood aside as the maids walked into the room. They were four and they bowed as if I was already their Luna. I felt a weird tingle at the pit of my belly.
“All you need to do is just sit down and relax, my lady.” I recognized the voice of the lady that spoke because it was the same voice that had replied earlier. She was the only blonde among them while the other three were brunettes. She had kind eyes and she reminded me of a child.
I was uncomfortable sitting there, watching them run around putting everything in order. One sprinted into the bathroom while another was busy with the wardrobe. The third was arranging a glowing jewelry box while the last maid, the blonde, was setting up the little table before a large mirror next to the king-sized bed.
The maid walked out of the bathroom and bowed to me, “Your hot medicinal bath is ready.”
Medicinal bath? What the heck was that? I wondered, partly horrified as I stepped into the bathroom.
It was more than accurate to describe the bathroom as luxurious. It was spacious and beautiful with a wide, golden bathtub. I couldn't tell if it was pure gold but knowing the kind of man Alpha Declan was, I guessed it was.
A sweet herbal scent flowed into my nostrils and I realized that it was oozing from the steaming bath. I have to admit it was the most comforting bath I’d ever taken and by the time I stepped out of the bathroom, the maids had picked out a beautiful gown.
Wait! All this stress for dinner? It feels like I'm missing a key piece of the puzzle.
I sat on the comfortable chair facing the large mirror and closed my eyes. They styled my hair differently, handled my make up and by the time I opened my eyes, I could hardly recognize the reflection I saw in the mirror. I gasped with awe and a satisfied smile spread across their faces. I looked even better than I had the previous day, when I had been dressed to be Alpha Ethel’s Luna and that was saying something.
I slipped into the wonderful dress. They had picked out a dazzling maroon gown that clung to my figure perfectly. It was like the dress had been made just for me!
I was overwhelmed by all the luxury that I had almost forgotten the main essence of it, to impress Alpha Declan. The thought wiped the smile off my face.
The finishing touch of my evening outfit was a sparkling, eye-catching diamond necklace.
The other maids had exited the room and only the blonde was left. “No other woman has ever worn this necklace apart from the last Luna of the pack.” The maid said, her eyes sparked with admiration and her tone overly dramatic. “That was Alpha Declan’s mother.”
I scoffed and rolled my eyes, “I bet Alpha Declan put you up to say that.” I retorted as my fingers caressed the lovely diamond.
It was real!
She laughed softly, “Of course not, my lady. The other women that come here are not allowed to touch any of the jewelry. If I'm being frank,” Her voice dropped into a whisper and she leaned closer. “You’re the first woman to be allocated this room.”
I was very much tempted to ask, “The first out of how many?” But I held it back at the last minute and decided not to put her under any unnecessary pressure.
I stared at the mirror long after she had gone. I couldn’t help but admire myself and all the beautiful gems.
My eyes caught a figure in the mirror and I jumped back in shock. I felt a sharp pain in my right ankle as I fell to the ground. I landed hard on my ass and groaned in pain.
“Ouch!" I cried out as pain shot through my entire being.
Alpha Declan stood at a corner, his arms thrust deep into his pockets and an impassive look adorned his mean face. I cried out again as a pang shot throughout my body.
He walked slowly to me, taking his sweet time with every step. “What have you done to yourself?” He asked in a flat unfeeling voice and his gaze fell on my ankle which I clutched dearly. “Look at you,” He said scornfully. “Spraining your ankle thirty minutes before dinner. Could you be more careless?”
Careless? What the f**k is he taking about?!
“You startled me!” I exclaimed with a mixture of agony and annoyance. “How did you get into my room and why did you have to act so stealthy, huh? Like a friggin’ ninja. I was scared and—my ankle hurts.” I cried out softly.
I could see the frustration on his face. To my surprise, he slipped his arms around my back and beneath my thighs and heaved me up without so much as a grunt. It was like he had picked up a piece of paper. I felt the warmth and oomph oozing out of his body and I closed my eyes for a second or two as I took it in. It felt like I was dazed by his scent and all I wanted to do was curl up in his arms like a child; for eternity.
Without so much as a warning he tossed me on the bed and I braced myself as I landed hard. Alpha Declan had dropped me!
“What is wrong with you? Can’t you see I’m hurt?” I groaned in pain. “Or are you above human feelings acting like a cyborg overlord?"
“And can’t you see I’m disappointed and irritated by the sight of you?” He retorted with a frown. “Just when you had the chance to do something worthy, you had to find a way to wiggle out of it.”
I gasped in disbelief at what he was insinuating, “What? So, you are saying it’s my fault I sprained my ankle?” I asked, staring up at him with wide, inquisitive eyes.
“Shut up, will you?” He snapped and thrust his hands into his pockets again. “Stay put while I call the pack doctor. You should be alright by morning.”
Despite the pain in my ankles, I glared at him and said pompously. “I’m coming with you to the dinner party.”
He was shocked by this and arched an eyebrow at me, “And how in f**k’s sake do you plan to do that? I don't have a wheelchair.”
I ignored that remark and sat up, “You wanted me at the dinner. The maids have already done everything by getting me ready for this and I’m not going to let it all go to waste. I’m coming with you and I’m walking there with my legs.”
“There’s a dance after dinner.”
Of course there is…this is great. It's just f*****g great! I thought, taking in a deep relaxing breath.
“I’ll dance with you then.” I replied quickly and his face tinged with surprise. I instantly regretted that I had replied so fast.
He nodded. “Alright, come on then.”
Although I had sounded confident, I actually had no idea how I planned to pull it off.
I stared down at my ankle which by now looked hideously bruised. The red tint was nothing compared to the swelling. I couldn't recognize my leg anymore. I refused to believe the leg I was looking at belonged to me.
“What's the hold up, Superwoman?" He asked with a mocking smile on his face. He knew I wasn't going to make it and he wanted to know he knew. The cocky son of a —
I groaned, turning away. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of seeing the frustration on my face.
“Maybe after the pack doctor takes a quick look." I muttered.
