CHAPTER 7 RAINA’S POV Alpha Declan didn’t bother to help me up. He just watched impassively, making me wonder why he was such a savage. I managed to push myself to the edge of the bed and the moment I set both foot on the floor, I felt a sharp pain in my twisted ankle. I wanted to cry out but I was aware of Declan’s watchful stare and held it in. I squeezed my fists and sighed heavily. There was no way I could see the night through in these heels! I concluded with disappointment, they were beautiful and it was a shame I couldn’t display them. I stared up at his augite blue eyes hopelessly and said, “I can’t walk in these heels.” He shrugged, “We’re late. Figure something out.” He replied flatly. At a corner of the room was a three-tier shoe rack that held many fancy shoes and footwears. From where I sat, I sighted a pair of cute silver flats that tickled my fancy. I smiled and kicked the heels off my feet. I managed to get up and I tottered slowly towards the rack. I felt his stare at the back of my head as I put on the flats. I moved more lightly and spontaneously. I flashed a smile at him, but he just grunted and gestured to the door. I scoffed as I walked past him, “Mr. Grumpy.” I mumbled. We alighted the stairs together, Declan took my hand in his halfway down and that sent a warm sensation swirling throughout my body. I stared at the side of his straight face, his cheekbones were high and protruding and he just stared ahead. “Now that I still found a way to come, will you tell me why this dinner party is so important and who are the guests there?” I asked as politely as I could sound. “As the night goes deeper, I’ll introduce these people to you. Most of them you just need to greet and walk by, but there is a particular Alpha, beta and his gamma that I need you to bow slightly to.” He said in his rich baritone that flowed into my ear, creating a wholesome melody. “Those are the people I intend to do business with. You’ll be introduced as my Luna so I need you to act accordingly.” “But I’m not your Luna.” I pointed out blankly. He stopped and that also brought me to an abrupt halt, my bad ankle threatened. He looked at me with a warning stare and said, “For tonight, you are my Luna.” He tugged at me and I fell into step beside him once again. I thought being the Luna of a pack even for a second would be thrilling, but this was the complete opposite of it. I felt like I was being used and Declan actually had no regard for me. But there was nothing I could do about it, only Alpha Ethel could save me now. I prayed that he would come latest the next night, I didn’t want another complete day in this hell hole. The marble floor of the large hall reflected the lights blaring from the chandeliers above. The moment I stepped in, I was choked with a fluorescence of wealth and euphoria. I took one look around the vast, beautifully decorated hall and instantly understood why Alpha Declan wanted me dressed as a queen. The people I saw were glamorous! With crowns on their heads or stylish hats, their outfits were lavish and sparkling. It felt like I sunk into a private, invisible shell as I suddenly felt belittled in their midst. Alpha Declan seemed to have noticed this for he pulled me forward. “Hold your head high, Raina.” He whispered into my ears and I felt his hot breath against my skin, my stomach curled. “Don’t make this shambolic.” “Oh dear!” A woman, close to her sixties or more, exclaimed as she walked towards us with wide arms. Everything she had on was pure, sparkling gold. “Declan! Boy have you grown!” I glanced at him and there was an awkward smile plastered on his usually stern face. She hugged him like a son and then her saggy eyes fell on me. She tilted her head with a frown and squinted at me. “And who do we have here?” She asked in a light voice and suddenly gaped at Declan. “Is she…?” Declan nodded and she flashed a broad, toothy smile at me. “You must be the w***e I met the other night.” My face dropped and I glared at Declan. He had an embarrassed look on his face as he took the woman’s right arm and led her away. “No, aunt, she’s not the one. That’s Raina, there isn’t too much to know about her yet…” I heard his voice trail off and it then became a wonder to me what Declan’s lifestyle was before he had brought me here. First, the maid had hinted at other ladies and now, this older woman had mistaken me for a w***e. Was Alpha Declan a philander? As the night went on, I became more uncomfortable as I felt almost every male stare hungrily grazing over my body. I couldn’t find Declan, he was lost in a crowd engaged in a deep conversation. I thought about leaving, but then I remembered his warnings. “Don’t make this shambolic…” When he finally returned, I had an accusing frown on my face and I turned away from him. “Why that look? Come on, no drama. It’s time to have dinner.” He said and I observed that everyone was moving to the long, huge table at the center of the room that had been arranged with all sorts of delicacies capable of feeding an entire pack. “Why did your aunt think I was a prostitute?” I asked. He looked at me and scoffed, “I don’t have an aunt, she was a friend of my father’s. And is that why you’re putting up an attitude? You need to know your place, that is none of your business.” He replied harshly. I stood there, just staring at him as a spark of anger threatened to burst inside of me. “Are you coming or not?” He asked and his eyes glowed forebodingly. “My place, according to you, is your mate and for the night, I’m your Luna.” I said grittily. “So, you were wrong, it is much of my business as it is your aunt’s.” I walked past him to the dinner table, there were only two seats left and it just had to be next to the old lady. I rolled my eyes and sighed with frustration, then sat next to her. Declan joined me by my side after a while and the dinner went on. For a brief moment there, all the drama going around had made me oblivious to the pain in my ankle, it all came back like a curse. I thought the rich and mighty didn’t chatter around dinner tables like us regular people, but I was very wrong about that conjecture. I listened to bits and bits of every conversation, Declan paid me no attention and thankfully, neither did the older woman. I felt awkward and out of place and when a soft music permeated throughout the room, indicating that it was time for the dance, I was relieved. Everyone left the huge table until it was only Declan and I left. I had two pressing issues. I felt the pain growing worse in my right ankle…and I didn’t even know how to dance!
