He watched Reagan and the humans until they walked into the house. He walked downstairs to go and meet them. Benny followed closely behind him.
Zoey rushed to them just as they stepped off the stairs. She looked anxious. Jeremiah stared at her as she came to a stop in front of him.
What the f**k did Reagan say to her?
“He wants Sky,” she said her eyes going wide.
So he was changing their plans, Jeremiah thought to himself. He gave Zoey a pat on the shoulder to calm her down. “Go hide,” he whispered to her. He had a feeling that something was about to happen with Reagan.
Her eyes became larger. Jeremiah nodded. He might have crazy plans for his pack, but that didn’t mean that he didn’t care about them.
Zoey scurried away.
He took a deep breath and walked towards the lounge. He heard mumbling voices that went quiet just as he opened the door to walk in. Reagan got to his feet and approached him with a wide smile.
“If it’s not my partner in crime,” he said slinging an arm over his shoulders and pulling him towards the humans. Jeremiah flung his arm away, and turned to him.
“What is this Reagan? I thought you were still working on our deal,” he said pointing to the humans. “And I don’t remember agreeing to you bringing them here.”
Reagan stared at him. He suddenly laughed the sound maniac like without any humour. “You wound me. But I see you haven’t guessed what this is. You will in a second….” He lifted his hand and started counting off his fingers. When he reached his thumb a scream ripped through the air.
“What the f**k?” Benny said running to the door. He came to a stop as heavily armed men came through the door. He walked backwards coming to a stop next to Jeremiah.
“Reagan, what the hell is this?” Jeremiah asked with a growl.
“It’s called betrayal. I sell werewolves for a living and you just offered me your pack. And your sister. I can’t wait to get my hands on her,” Reagan said rubbing his palms together. Jeremiah didn’t even think. He felt his wolf rip through him and launch itself at Reagan. Pain shot through him as something slammed into his side. He dropped to the ground with a thud. His wolf pushed to his feet and tried to fight, but he felt dizzy. More screams filled the air.
No. Not his pack. Things were not supposed to go this way. His wolf growled and shook off the dizziness.
A hard kick slammed into him. He dropped to the ground again.
“I would stay down if I were you. You lost, Jeremiah,” Reagan said leaning close to him. “Don’t fight. They tell me it doesn’t hurt as much when you don’t fight.” Reagan laughed. He moved out of view and Jeremiah heard him speak with the humans. “There is a girl with short hair. That one is mine. Radio your men and tell them not to hurt her. I don’t want a scratch on her.”
Sky… Jeremiah thought of his sister as chaos erupted around him. He was happy that she wasn’t there to see this. She was safe…tucked away in that hole in the witch’s coven. Drowsiness took over his mind and he blacked out.
The next time he woke up, he was lying down on the cold metal of a moving truck. He was back in human form. He groaned feeling like he was hit by a car.
“Easy,” Benny said next to him. Jeremiah sat up slowly, looking around him. They were in a shipping container. Sad eyes stared at him. He could feel their pain and betrayal slam into him. Some had tears stained faces, clutching on to each other. This was their fate. He was going to sell them to the humans. Now, that he was in there with him…he couldn’t stand this. He reached out his hand to the closest one, but he cringed away from him. Pain and regret stabbed through him.
He pushed to his feet and walked to the doors of the container. He tried to pull them open, even though he knew they were locked. They didn’t budge. He slammed his fists over and over on the metal until his hands went bloody. Benny came behind him and took hold of his hands so that he wouldn’t continue hurting himself.
“Hey, calm down. You need to think,” Benny whispered harshly. “You need to get us out of this. Where did Reagan say he was going to take the werewolves you sold to the humans?”
Jeremiah shook his head. He didn’t ask Reagan anything. All he was focused on was the money. He didn’t care where he was taking them.
“I don’t know,” he said. Jeremiah slid down the cold metal doors. The motion of the truck had him sliding to the side. Benny placed a hand to his shoulder to steady him. He sat down next to him.
“I guess we will find out when we get there. At least your sister is safe. Reagan will never get his hands on her.”
Jeremiah nodded. That was the only thing he did right.
The truck drove for hours. Jeremiah couldn’t tell the time of day it was. They were clearly taking them very far away. No one was going to notice that their pack was destroyed in one day. They were a small pack after all. He buried his face in his hands as regret chewed its way through him.
The truck finally slowed down, and moved on after a few seconds. It came to a stop a few minutes later. The doors were open. A flashlight was pointed in their faces making it hard for them to see. But the disinfectant smell of a lab was not hard to miss.
Chills ran up and down Jeremiah’s body as he imagined what waited for them.
“Out,” a man shouted just as the lights were turned on, and he could see that they were in a large room. It looked like it was underground somewhere. Men dressed in all black, heavily armed stood around the truck. The man who spoke stood in front. He wore a white lab coat and thick glasses. He looked old, with greying hair.
“You make a wrong move, you’re dead,” the man said stepping away from the door. “Let’s go. Get them inside the cages. I have work to do.” He turned and walked away.
They were all doomed, Jeremiah thought as he stepped out of the container.
