Jeremy’s P.O.V.
A f*****g shitshow!
That is what this place is that I used to call my everyday life living as a young man inside the Grey pack.
But no, not today.
Today it shall be called ‘ a f*****g shitshow’.
Why?
Because my pack was under a f*****g attack right f*****g now! I squeezed both my hands into fists as I was leaning against one of the walls and I looked around the room and all of the people who were hiding in here along with me. Right now, we were all hidden inside the basement of our pack house. The place was cramped and packed with people, at least giving me some peace of mind that most people had made it in here in time. Most, meaning not all of them, because the screams that I could hear right above my f*****g head were telling me that still, people from our pack were being slaughtered right this f*****g second.
I squeezed my fists even harder as I turned my head and locked eyes with Nico, one of my brothers who was holding on to his mate while she had her arms wrapped around his waist. Nico wasn’t my real brother, at least not by blood, but by a bond even stronger than that. He was one of my best friends, he meant more to me than other people that I did share blood with. So yeah, the word ‘brother’ represented our relationship best right now. And I gave him a slow nod of my head, letting him know that this wasn’t his fault. He was not to blame for what was happening right above us that very second. Because I knew Nico, and I knew that he was blaming himself right now.
Why?
Because the pack that was attacking us right now was the Black Blood pack. The Black Blood pack, was in fact Nico’s former pack, the pack that cut out Nico’s tongue and tossed him out of the street for a dead man as ‘punishment’. At least, he was close to being dead when our Beta, Derek, had found him in the woods where they had left him. He had been brought back here and given the chance at a better life. A stable life, if he would earn his place here and get the trust of our Alpha. Which he did, more than once. Nico in fact used to be an enforcer, working for the council that overlooks all the werewolf packs in the US. When someone messes up, Nico had been one of the guys to get rid of the threat. The last case Nico worked on as an enforcer, was the Black Blood pack. Nico had gone undercover and worked his way into the Black Blood pack to try and understand why this pack was attacking other packs and building a small army. But somehow, his cover had been blown, and he had ended up nearly dead in the woods with his tongue clipped as a result of that. Luckily, our pack, the Grey pack, is a pack that believes in second chances, which was what Nico had honestly deserved. And ever since he moved here and he had found his mate in Taylor, he had been one of our strongest fighters and most loyal men. This man had earned his stay, and nobody blamed him for what was happening right now above our heads. Not one single person, because Nico was simply one of our own. He was one of us, a pack member of the Grey pack, and nothing else.
Now, what I could not deal with, was that we were just waiting down here. Just… sitting here, almost relaxing, while those fuckers upstairs were trashing our pack and killing the few people that didn’t make it into the basement in time. Sure, you could say that it would be their own fault that they hadn’t made it down here in time. The Alpha had sent out a mind link to each and every single pack member, commanding them to run immediately and hide in the basement of the pack house, to not grab anything and to just run for it. Derek had guarded the door into the basement for as long as he possibly could have. But once the danger had gotten too close, he had listened to his own orders as well. Once the danger had gotten too close, he needed to close that door and save everyone hidden inside. Which was where we were, right f*****g now.
I growled, my wolf Lako losing his every last nerve for just standing here and doing nothing while our pack members upstairs were getting slaughtered. So I did the only thing I could do, I marched over to Derek, our Beta, who was still guarding the door in case the enemy would find it and march straight inside to kill us all.
“We need to do something,” I told him, seeing how he turned and his dark eyes locked with mine. His stubble beard didn’t mask the way he was chewing on his own teeth. His eyes shimmered since he seemed to be talking to either his own wolf or our Alpha Archer, who wasn’t even on pack lands when the attack happened.
Bloody f*****g coincidence?
I think not.
“We are already doing something.” Derek answered me, giving me a no-bullshit look.
“We need to do more.” I added, seeing how he sighed deeply and he rolled his eyes at me. The sigh letting me know that he actually agreed with me, the roll of his eyes telling me we couldn’t because the Alpha had commanded us to stay here and protect the others by hiding and staying silent. Yes, that was the plan. Hide and stay put. In case of the enemy found our hiding spot, all warriors, including myself, would throw ourselves on the door and fight every single one of those mother fuckers in order to protect the women and pups and older people that were too weak to protect themselves.
“We need to wait until Archer is back here.” Derek told me, his eyebrows rising on his forehead as if he was telling me to step back or he would kick my ass if I would get any other crazy ideas into my head.
“I have nothing to lose if I go up there. f**k it, Derek, I might be able to save some people.” I told him as another scream sounded through the air being followed by the sound of glass scattering. I looked around the room, as I saw some little kids covering their ears with their tiny little hands and some women who started to cry as they quickly wiped their tears with their own hands.
“This is a f*****g warzone and we are just sitting here.” I added, turning my attention back on Derek.
“No, we are not just sitting here, we are taking orders from our leader and we are following them.” Derek told me, placing his hands on his hips as he looked to the left of him, where his own mate, Jessica, came into view.
“And don’t give me that ‘I have nothing to lose’ crap, Jeremy. You have plenty to live for. And you are staying right here with all of us as well. So one day, when you find your own mate, she can thank me for kicking your ass today, if you don’t start listening to me right f*****g now.” He told me, to which I barked out a laugh and shook my head.
Me?
Having a mate?
Funny, that guy!
You see, my friends, and I mean ALL of my friends. They found their mates by now. Each and every single one of them. The whole lot, all of them but little old me. This little fucker right here simply cannot find his other half. His one true mate. So by now, at the glorious f*****g age of 28, I basically had given up searching for her altogether. I had just taken peace with the fact that by now, the girl was either dead or she had taken herself a chosen mate because this dumb s**t hadn’t been able to track her down. So, instead of searching for her, I had become my own person by now. And today, I was the clown of the group, the joker. Hell, my hair was already red like I was a f*****g part of the Weasley family, I might as well live up to it.
“By the time those fuckers are done upstairs, you won’t have a bed left to f**k your mate in. Let alone sleep.” I grinned at Derek, seeing how he rolled his eyes back at me once again, before I felt a hand making contact with the back of my head, turning myself around to lock eyes with none other than my very own mother.
Shit…
“Ma!” I yelled at her, laying my hand on the spot on my head where she had just slapped me as if I was a f*****g six-year-old who had just said something bad.
Well…
I might have just said something inappropriate…
“Don’t speak like that to your Beta!” My ma yelled at me, while I still rubbed the back of my head, hoping for the sting to go away. My mother had Scottish roots in her veins and for the life of me, that woman could slap like there was no tomorrow.
“Either way, once the enemy is gone, we will still have our family standing next to us!” My ma added as her eyes shot daggers at me, her curly short hair which had the exact same color as mine bounced on her shoulders as she looked at Derek. She was a head shorter than us both, but her personality made her stand tall like a damn skyscraper in New York City.
“And a bed, that we can fix with some nails and glue or whatever. You, on the other hand, you going up there and playing the hero? Once the enemy has your head on a spike, we cannot glue you back together my boy, so you listen to your mother and you sit your gorgeous ass down, or I will ask the Beta to tie you up until you know how to use your ears like a good son would listen to his mother.” She spoke, to which I sighed deeply and with a ‘yes ma’, I just let her do what she did best. Control my life, and shop away at my masculinity.
“Beatrice, it is always nice to see you.” Derek spoke, winking at her in a playful way.
“Anytime, Beta.” My ma answered him, as she patted him on his arm before she started to walk back into the basement where she went to sit alongside Cleo, my older brother’s mate, who was three months pregnant with their second pup. While my brother Tyron was bouncing my little nephew Oscar on his arm. Another picture-perfect reminder that everyone seemed to have it all, but me. Because here I was. All alone, no mate, no kids, just a mother slapping the back of my head. But no, I wasn’t going to sit here and feel sorry for myself, so I simply shook my head, trying to get rid of all the negativity, as I looked back at Derek.
“Any news of the Alpha?” I asked him, to which Derek nodded.
“He will be here soon. Once he gets here and we know that everything is safe and we can leave our hiding spot, we will have our work cut out for us.” Derek told me, to which I nodded, knowing that I was willing to do whatever it took to make sure that our pack would remain afloat after this f*****g attack would be over with, and we could hopefully just move on with our lives, just like we had done before this f*****g Back Blood pack had come knocking down our borders and they had started killing our people.
“Good, so we’ll wait then.” I shrugged, turning myself as I leaned against the wall next to Derek. Crossing my arms and doing what I was told to do, sit back and wait for the storm to pass.
Little did I know, that the real shitstorm had only just begun.
