Chapter 4: Book of Evolution

Over the next couple of days, all sorts of medicines and potions were being sent into her room. Kira was still recuperating, with the help of Auntie Herma, her condition gradually became better.

On the bed, Kira opened her eyes. She looked at Auntie Herma who was busy preparing her meals, “Auntie Herma, do you know the reason why I’m wolf-less?” She had been wondering about it this whole time. There’s nothing wrong with her body. So, what seems to be the problem?

Auntie Herma was stunned by her question. This is the first time Kira initiated to talk about her condition. “When I first saw you, you didn’t have this weak physique of yours. Your aura was way stronger than any normal child. However, as you grow older, it gradually changes. I suspect that someone had done something to block your strength when you were still a baby.”

Kira quivered. She didn’t know about this in the past. It seemed that she was indeed poisoned in the past if what Auntie Herma said was true. How can a healthy child become so weak as she grows older?

She had to investigate this secretly. “Did other people know about this as well?”

“Master and all the other elders know about your condition.”

Kira froze for a long time after hearing it. If that’s the case, his father is connected to her condition. She must start her investigation as soon as possible. “You can leave now, Auntie Herma. I would like to sleep more.”

She laid down on her bed and closed her eyes. Kira heard Auntie Herma sighing deeply and left the room to let her recuperate.

Alone, at last, she opened her eyes and sorted everything. “This body of mine is really weak. In this world where martial arts, wolf transformation, and strength are respected, a person who doesn’t have any of those is considered trash.”

Kira was slowly stroking her hands while thinking of what she should do. She can’t get her revenge if she’s this weak and powerless…

Her eyebrows raised slightly when her fingers grazed something on her right hand. She could not see anything at first, but as she looked closely, on her ring finger, there seemed to be a mark. “What is this?”

As she touched the mark slightly, she could feel a strange surge of power surrounding it. Her heart was beating with excitement as she felt the power converging around her fingers. She waved her hand slightly and a white lotus enveloped in a silvery-white light was floating in mid-air. “A flower?”

Kira blinked a few times as she carefully reached out as the pink lotus slowly landed on her palm. “A white lotus? This is unheard of.” What is this magical thing in her hand?

“My little lotus… just what are you?” she whispered under her breath as she traced her slender finger over the petals of the flower. A sweet fragrance permeated the entire room. “Its scent is so lovely,” as she took in a deep whiff.

She was not sure about anything yet, but whenever she smelled this scent, her blood seemed to flow smoother. It has a very enticing scent that made her body feel lighter.

Kira’s eyes lit up when she felt that. If she was not mistaken, the scent was purifying her body. She had to know if this was indeed the case. But where can she look for information?

She stood up from her bed and walked back and forth, trying to think where she could look for information.

Suddenly, a black wolf jumped inside her large window. His blue eyes were staring at her. “Bariston,” she said in a low voice.

There was only one wolf who dared to use her window to enter the room. It was only Bariston. According to him, it’s tiring to use the stairs, so it would be better to just jump in through the window.

At first, she was scared that he might get caught because of it, but fortunately, Bariston is skilled at hiding his presence.

The black wolf transformed into a young man instantly. “Lady Kira, is there something bothering you? I noticed that you have been walking back and forth in your room for a while now.”

Kira glanced at him for a while. Bariston knows a lot of information about the outside world. He had been going in and out of the castle grounds without getting noticed for so many years already. So, he must have an idea about this plant.

“Bariston,” she said, after a moment of silence.

“Yes, Lady Kira.”

“Do you know anything about special abilities?” she asked softly.

Bariston pondered before answering, “I haven’t heard of it, Lady Kira… But I think there’s a book that tells about the history of the empire. Maybe you can find an answer there.”

“A book? What book?” Kira’s eyebrows creased.

“It’s called Book of Evolution. I heard there’s only one copy of it. That book is very important but I don’t know why. But they said it suddenly vanished in thin air. Maybe we can find some information about the book’s location here in the castle? Since Rouguemont Castle has been built for centuries already. And also, there’s a rumor circulating that the last place where the Book of Evolution was seen was here in Rouguemont Castle.”

Kira looked at the young man standing in front of her, “If what you’re saying is right, that book must be in my father’s study. I’m sure he won’t let me in alone. And I also can’t tell that I’m looking for that book or else, he might be suspicious of me. I can’t afford that to happen at this moment.”

“How about I steal it from his study?” Bariston nonchalantly suggested.

Once she heard these words, she immediately got angry. “Are you crazy? What if you get caught? Don’t you know how tight the security is at my father’s study? And also, how sure are you that it’s really in my father’s study?”

“We need to think of something else,” she asked after thinking for a while. Obviously, in her current condition, she can’t afford to act recklessly. It might cause her harm and the people she cared for.

“What about Auntie Herma? She had been with Madam for too long, she might know something about it.” Kira’s face lit up. There was a bright smile on her face. “You are right. Quick, call Auntie Herma over.”

“As you command, Lady Kira.”

After Bariston left, Kira was silent and released the pink lotus once again. “I hope you are something useful for me.” She played with the petals of the flower and accidentally plucked a petal from it. The petal turned into a seed instantly and the lotus flower disappeared.

“A seed? A lotus seed?” Kira was completely silent. She summoned the white lotus once more and when it appeared, it was now complete. Like the petal, she plucked earlier grew back.

A knock on the door made Kira hide the seed and the lotus flower. After gaining back her composure, she calmly said, “Come in”.

Auntie Herma walked in and Bariston followed after her. “Auntie Herma, there’s something I need to ask you.”

“It’s about the Book of Evolution. Bariston told me a while ago that you wanted to look at it.” Kira nodded.

“Do you have an idea of its location?” she asked.

“The Book of Evolution had secretly vanished and a lot of castles had been searching tirelessly for it. But they didn’t know that it was here in Rouguemont Castle. I don’t know the whole story but Master had this book. I saw it once accidentally when I was cleaning his study. It’s a highly valuable and priceless book. Then, Master committed a great mistake which made Madam angry. If my memory is right, the fight lasted for half a year.” Auntie Herma slowly trailed off.

“A fight? Why did they fight? Mother seems not the kind who can easily get angry.” Kira raised her eyebrows. Her mother is a very gentle person and not once did she see her get mad at someone, lest her father. Her mother loved her father so much, so how come she got mad?

“I’m not sure about the details but I heard it’s connected to the Book of Evolution. Madam demanded to give the book to her or else they would go on separate ways. So, to please Madam, Master gave the Book of Evolution to her as a peace offering,” she explained.

“So you mean to say, Mother has that book? Where did she hide that?”

“I heard Madam saying that she placed that book somewhere that no one can ever think of. To a place that Madam treasured the most but was considered as trash to everyone,” Auntie Herma vaguely replied.
