Chapter 30: The First Challenger

1437 Words
“Lady Kira, are you going to take part in this round? Who is the lucky person that you will choose?” Katelyn asked curiously. “I will not choose,” Kira answered. For this challenge, anyone can challenge another person as long as that person passes the first round. Male participants can challenge female participants and vice versa. It might look like it’s unfair for the female participants, since the male participants can choose military arts which they are proficient with and disadvantageous for the females. However, nothing is fair in this world. No matter what a person’s gender is, either male or female, the strong can trample the weak. This is the true principle that this examination is showing to everyone. So, for a person to be victorious, he or she should defeat no matter who their opponents were. In the past, she didn’t manage to reach this round because she was sent away after that scene she created with the chrysanthemum flower. Even if she didn’t paint that flower, it’s still impossible for her to make it to the next round. She would only be making a fool of herself if she took part in it in her past life. “Why? Aren’t you going to compete?” Katelyn was somewhat disappointed and said, “I’m sure a lot of people are looking forward to your performance in this round. It’s your time to show off your talent, Lady Kira.” “There is no need for me to do that.” Kira started fiddling with the chess game on the table again and replied to Katelyn without even lifting her head, “Even if I’m not going to challenge anyone, someone will still challenge me anyway. I’m too lazy to challenge anyone, let them come to me and challenge me instead. I would be saving a lot of energy if that happened.” “You are really…” Katelyn was flustered and exasperated, “The reason you won’t challenge anyone is that you are too lazy to talk and challenge anyone. Should I detest your laziness or admire it instead, Lady Kira?” “Congratulations on winning the painting category, my dear sister.” A voice interrupted their conversation. It was Valerie who was standing in front of them with Leslie and Celina. “Who are you going to challenge Kira? I would be delighted if it was not me since I’m sure I would immediately be defeated by you.” “Why Valerie? I thought you would be delighted instead if we were going to compete with each other… That would mean that the champion would still come from the royal family whether you or I would win in the examination.” Kira answered with pure innocence on her face. Valerie was choked by her words. She did not know why Kira seemed to have changed her attitude towards her. She was hell-bent on opposing her no matter the circumstances. She would talk back and didn’t look like the meek little sister she had before. ‘Is it because of that incident in the pond that made her lash out? If that is so, everything would make sense, since her changes seem to have evolved around that time.’ Valerie bit her lips and seemed somewhat aggrieved as she softly said, “I naturally want to bring glory to our family. Everyone was having doubts about our closeness and whether it was me who gave you the idea of what to paint in the examination. Of course, I want to prove to everyone that we have a close relationship and we don’t have any animosity. If you do not challenge me, the rumors will be discredited immediately.” Since they were surrounded by people, Valerie’s voice sounded gentle but also loud. So, every word she said was heard by everyone. Initially, there seemed to be nothing wrong with her words. However, if one is knowledgeable, they would understand the suspicions hidden in it. Although Kira had explained her painting thoroughly earlier, it was still hard for everyone to believe it. She was once an i***t for so many years, so it’s impossible for her to suddenly draw something like that without anyone’s help. So, if this time Kira would challenge Valerie, who was known to be the best painter in their generation, it would show clearly how idiotic Kira would be if there were no pointers given to her in advance. But if she did also not challenge Valerie, it would show that she was afraid of losing face and would then prove that her painting earlier was not her own painting. Valerie also had this thought in her heart. She still can’t believe that Kira was the one who thought of that painting. There’s a big difference if she was the one challenging Kira rather than Kira challenging her. It would look like she was looking down on Kira if she was the one who would propose the challenge. It would not look good on her image. However, if Kira proposed the challenge to her instead, it would look like she was just complying with her sister’s wish and Kira would be seen as someone who was so overbearing and arrogant. In that way, her image would go down the drain if she was defeated in their battle. Katelyn heard the words and managed to understand them instantly and immediately ridiculed, “Lady Valerie sounded so sweet on the outside but so poisonous on the inside. I’m sorry to burst your bubble and destroy your plan, but Lady Kira doesn’t want to challenge anyone. So, please look for an alternative plan instead.” “You don’t have to be so vicious, Ms. Saige. Lady Valerie was just purely worried about Lady Kira,” Celina argued. “I’m sorry if that sounded different on your part, Ms. Saige.” Valerie smiled gently, “I just said that for my sister’s sake. It’s because I don’t want people to criticize her and be ridiculed because of rumors.” From beginning to end, Kira continued playing her chess and didn’t lift her head in reply, “Don’t worry Valerie. I don’t have an interest in competing or proving anything.” Valerie did not expect that Kira would give such a straightforward reply in front of so many people. She had tried so hard to make her agitated and to fall into her trap. It’s the most annoying thing in the world! Making a pitfall for someone, but that person chose not to fall into it. Since Kira wasn’t willing to answer her provocations, this made her think that her painting didn’t come from her. This made her a little happy. She would just wait for Kira to make a fool out of herself sooner. “Since my dear sister is not willing, then I would not say anymore. Goodbye then.” She turned around and returned to her seat. At the other side of the hall, particularly at Anthony’s table, the young man had been secretly watching Lady Valerie from afar. He saw her walking towards Lady Kira’s table and suddenly flashed a gentle smile at him. He didn’t know, but he suddenly felt excited, so he focused intently on watching her. However, after Lady Valerie left Lady Kira’s table, that gentle smile vanished and she slightly bowed her head, looking upset. This made him anxious and thought that it might be because of Lady Kira. The fury in his heart heightened as he coldly looked at the young lady in the red dress. He still hasn’t avenged his sister for what had happened earlier. Of all the people, what he hated the most was the people who hurt his family. And making his sister embarrassed in front of the whole crowd. That’s a grave mistake. He would surely make Lady Kira feel the same embarrassment his sister had felt earlier. How dare that idiotic princess compete with his talented sister?… He would definitely avenge her. Kira looked at the chess pieces in front of her. She had already noticed that someone had been observing her since the moment Valerie left her table. There’s no need to ask who that person was. “Someone is already prepared to challenge me. How nice!… He is the very first on the list.” “What do you mean?” Katelyn spoke with curiosity, “Someone is already challenging you? Who?” Kira stopped the chess game and looked toward the stage. “A protective brother and a loyal admirer. A very fascinating combination, in my opinion.”
