Chapter 12

"Mom, I've told you I cannot marry Jeremy. I don't love him," Cindy replied. "Shut your mouth, Cindy! Why do you keep stressing me and your father in this house? Is it because you're our only child or what? Gosh!" Mrs. Bola ranted, and Cindy frowned standing up from her bed, and wrapping her arms around her chest. "Mom, I don't like Jeremy, and that's the truth. I have someone else I like..." Cindy said, and Mrs. Bola stared at Cindy in shock at first, as she assumed Cindy was lying to her. Ever since Mrs. Bola had known Cindy, she had never acknowledged liking a man. How could it be that all of a sudden, now Jeremy was asking for her hand in marriage, Cindy suddenly remembered that she liked someone and wanted to use that person as an excuse to reject Jeremy? "Forget about the person you're talking about, Cindy, as neither I nor your father would support you marrying him. You will have to marry Jeremy, whether you like him or not, and this is what your father and I have decided, which you cannot go against it." Mrs. Bola turned harshly to leave Cindy's bedroom, hurt by Cindy's behavior towards Jeremy. Mrs. Bola knew she couldn't change Cindy, as she was also aware that Cindy's behavior stank. Not waiting for Cindy's response, Mrs. Bola stormed out, clicking her black shoes sharply against the tiled floor as she exited Cindy's bedroom, slamming the door shut. Cindy frowned as soon as her mother left. No matter what she might say or preach to her mother about Peter, she knew her parents wouldn't agree that she wasn't in love with Jeremy. Cindy sat on her bed and cried, as she truly did not want to marry Jeremy. It was true that Jeremy came from a well-to-do family and met her family's prestigious standards, but Cindy didn't want Jeremy for her husband, she didn't like him at all. "Imagine Jeremy asking me if I am a virgin. If I'm not, he will change and be angry with me, right?" Cindy questioned herself, sobbing, her eyes turned red, refusing to leave her chamber. Cindy knew Peter hadn't accepted her proposal yet, but she still thought about approaching him again and making him understand that she was serious about him. "Maybe I should approach Peter again. Mom and Dad cannot force me into a stupid marriage of their own convenience just to maintain a societal wedding and glamorous marriage. No..." Cindy said, wiping her teary eyes with the back of her right palm. She picked up her phone and stared at her contact list. Contemplating whom to call and wanting to exit the house since she knew her mother was severely angry with her, Cindy stared at the contact list on her phone, but none were of interest. She didn't have any friends aside from Lora Adams, her aloof, billionaire-classy nature had pushed many female friends away from her, except for Lora. Cindy thought to dial Lora's number, as she needed someone to talk to. Staring at Lora's phone number on her contact list, Cindy contemplated dialing it, remembering she had ended the call with Lora the previous night. She sighed and decided to call Lora first and calmly explain her situation. Waiting for the call to connect, Cindy threw the card containing Jeremy's phone number to the floor in her room, silently cursing in her mind never to have anything to do with Jeremy. "Hello..." Lora's low voice came through. Cindy glanced at the wall clock in her room, noting it was already past 1 p.m. "Hello, Lora. Hi," Cindy responded, and Lora immediately sat up on her bed and asked, "What's wrong, Cindy? Why are you crying? Don't tell me you're crying because a man rejected your proposal?" Lora immediately asked what was on her mind, as she had been wondering how Cindy could propose to a guy to be her boyfriend. "No, Lora. Not about that. Honestly, I don't know what to do right now. Mom and Dad are setting me up for an arranged marriage with a senator's son, and I don't like him," Cindy complained, and Lora laughed out loud. "Calm down, girlfriend. You should be happy at least your parents want you to settle down. How about mine, who don't even have time for me?" Lora asked, and Cindy sighed. "But I don't love the senator's son. I don't want him," Cindy said, and Lora laughed again in the background. "Hahaha. Calm down first, Cindy. When did you actually fall in love to now know whether you love someone or not?" "I am serious, Lora, and I'm not joking," Cindy stated, and Lora stopped laughing. "Fine, but honestly, I think you should still give him a chance and get to know the senator's son first. He might be a good man and not as bad as you might think," Lora advised. "No... Not about that. Honestly, Lora, there's this handsome guy I saw, and I like him. You see, I don't know how to explain it to you, as he hasn't accepted me. I'm hurt, and I cannot think of marrying Jeremy as I don't feel anything for him," Cindy admitted, her face flushing red. "Okay. So what do you plan on doing now?" Lora asked. "I don't know. What do you think I should do? But honestly, I cannot accept Jeremy." "I think you should calm down first, girlfriend, and think all this through. I'm still shocked you're telling me that you truly proposed to a guy. You, Cindy? This is quite unbelievable. Anyway, just calm down first and don't rush things. If the guy you're talking about that you proposes to, still rejects you, then I think it's best for you to move on and accept marrying the senator's son like your parents want. I still don't support you going after a man. It's very irresponsible for a lady to chase after a man. He might see you as irresponsible or a slut or a cheap lady. Do you understand what I mean?" Lora asked, and Cindy sighed. "Sure I do, but I still like him. Let me just plan it out first, then I will explain it better to Jeremy that we're from two different worlds and I cannot marry him." "Okay. Just be good, and if you're bored at home, you can come over and let's hang out today. I'm at home now resting, and your call just woke me up," Lora said. "I'm sorry," Cindy apologized, and Lora sighed. "It's alright. As long as you're in a much better mood now than when you just called me, I'm fine and okay with that." "Okay, bye, and get back to sleep; let me prepare to go out," Cindy replied, and Lora laughed on the phone, still finding it surprising that Cindy had truly asked a man out. Lora knew how ruthless Cindy had been in her previous relationships and didn't know if Cindy was a virgin or not. Cindy had refused to do many silly things couples do to spice up their relationship, often threatened to sue all her exes in court. So how come Cindy was now the same woman asking a man out? Lora silently wondered in her room inside her mother's mansion—how the man who made Cindy propose to him looked. Definitely all the past boyfriends of Cindy that she had seen were mostly handsome. So how would this new man look as well? Lora remembered she hadn't even asked Cindy about the man after her heart and sighed, deciding to catch some sleep first as the sun was still burning brightly in the sky. ------- Meanwhile, Cindy finally slid out of her pink bed and picked up Jeremy's card that she had thrown to the floor. Knowing her mother would still be sad about her rude behavior towards Jeremy, Cindy sighed, switched off her laptop, and prepared to go out to see if she could find Peter.
