CHAPTER 4

Peter shook his head in rejection; he couldn't sleep with a woman for money. He sighed and finally walked back to the bench in front of the closed shop to sit and stare out at the busy road, as he didn’t have a home. He was waiting for night to fall completely so he could return to the under-bridge where he slept every night. Meanwhile, Cindy arrived home at her father's mansion, a magnificent duplex house. As the only child of her billionaire parents, she parked her red car in their garage and stepped out, before walking up to the mansion entrance. The duplex mansion was painted white, adorned with beautiful flowering green plants at the front, and it featured glass walls. She walked into the living room and met her mother's maid, Esther. "Welcome home, Aunt Cindy," Esther greeted her. Cindy frowned and paused, scolding Esther. "Haven't I warned you to stop calling me Aunt Cindy? Here, take this car key, go to my car, and bring out the white polythene bag that I forgot in there. Take it upstairs to my bedroom." Cindy handed Esther her car keys, as she didn't like her maid. Just then, her mother stepped out from the kitchen as she heard Cindy's voice. Esther was related to Cindy through Cindy's mother's side, but Cindy did not want to acknowledge Esther as her relative because she hated sharing anything that belonged to her. She didn't like how her mother had cared for Esther since her mother traveled to the village and brought Esther to their house. "Cindy," Mrs. Bola called, entering the living room while drying her wet hands with a short white kitchen towel. She wore a long brown gown. "When will you learn to be nicer to Esther and understand that she isn't just a maid? She's my aunt’s daughter from the village, and she’s only helping me whenever you're not around?" Mrs. Bola stated, indirectly scolding her daughter. "Mom... Good afternoon," Cindy greeted her mother, staring ahead at the living room stairs. She added, "I know that Esther is not a maid, but tell her to stop calling me Aunt, as it makes it seem like we're related. We are not sisters, and I don't need her closeness." "Cindy..." Mrs. Bola frowned, and Cindy fell silent. "I have to go upstairs now, Mom. I’ll be back to join you for dinner," Cindy said. Cindy catwalked to the stairs and went upstairs to her bedroom while Mrs. Bola sighed and turned back to Esther. "It’s okay; you can go and bring what she asked you to." "Okay, ma," Esther replied before finally walking out of the house. ***** Cindy walked into her bedroom, her mind occupied with thoughts of the handsome man she had seen at the shopping mall. She couldn’t stop thinking about him and how she had reacted. Cindy walked up to her window to pull it open, allowing a gust of wind to blow into her pink-painted bedroom. Then she approached her mirror to admire her beautiful reflection once more. She was a cute young lady, and she smiled satisfactorily at her reflection, but thoughts began to swirl about what it would be like to be the handsome man’s wife. "Gosh, just imagine us as a couple, with him touching me and bathing with me," Cindy got lost in her daydream as she imagined herself and Peter as husband and wife. Just then, her room door swung open without a knock, and Esther walked in. Cindy jolted out of her trance and glared at Esther for interrupting her sweet thoughts. "I'm sorry; I brought the white nylon that you asked me to get," Esther said as she immediately apologized. "Go ahead and place it on the chair, then leave," Cindy dismissed her. Esther rushed to the white plastic chair to drop the bag then darted out of Cindy's room. Cindy sighed after Esther left and walked to her bed to sit, taking off her red shoes to release her feet. She stood up again, not wanting anyone else to disturb her thoughts about the handsome man she was increasingly preoccupied with. She walked to her room door to lock it. Just then, she heard another knock, and she asked, "Who's there?" "It's me, Cindy. Open up," Mrs. Bola replied, surprised to hear her daughter's voice from outside. She had seen Esther run out, and she wondered what Cindy had done to make her flee so quickly. Cindy pulled the door open, and her mother walked in, smiling at her. "What's up, Mom? I want to take my bath now," Cindy said, noticing that her mother had majestically walked into her room. Mrs. Bola smiled and replied, "Close the door first, then come sit on the bed." Cindy shut her door and walked over to her mother, but she refused to sit. "I want to be quick with my bath, Mom. Just tell me why you’re here," Cindy said, glancing away. Her mother replied, "Okay. Actually, your father called me today and told me he has accepted a marriage proposal on your behalf. Tomorrow, which is Sunday, Jeremy Lukeman will be here to see you." "Why, Mom? I'm not interested in Jeremy," Cindy replied. Although she didn’t know Jeremy personally, she was familiar with his father’s reputation in the city. "You don’t have a choice, Cindy. And don’t you dare misbehave in front of Jeremy tomorrow. Hurry up; I’m waiting for you downstairs so we can have dinner together as a family." "Mom..." Cindy tried to protest, but Mrs. Bola cut her off, saying, "No excuses. Be quick with your bath! I will be waiting." Mrs. Bola exited the room, and Cindy screamed out in frustration, "Oh!! Is it mandatory to marry now?" Mrs. Bola shook her head and walked away, heading downstairs while wondering where she went wrong in raising her only daughter. She knew Cindy was rude, despite her intelligence. Cindy finally walked back to her bathroom to bathe, continuing to think about Peter. She didn’t know his name but felt guilty about publicly insulting him and throwing money at him. She thought, "I just hope to see him again." Cindy stripped off her white gown and stepped into the shower. She couldn't stop reflecting on her mother’s words. She knew that her arrogance and refusal to become intimate with the men she had dated in the past had led to her many failed relationships. At just 24 years old, Cindy was also a lawyer. So, she sighed and decided to shower quickly so she could join her mother for dinner, knowing she couldn't marry Jeremy. As she bathed quickly, Cindy remembered her last failed relationship. The last guy she had dated was a billionaire who asked her to perform a s****l act on him, which she found repulsive. Cindy had told David, "How do you expect me to do that? With what?" Unable to stay in the same room with him, she quickly packed up her clothes and bolted out of the house, knowing David wouldn’t dare stop her. Cindy was the daughter of a commissioner, and David knew better than to trespass even though he liked her and wanted her in bed. He instructed his bodyguards to let her go. Cindy recalled that she had broken up with her last boyfriend over that incident, blocking him online and rejecting his calls, telling him it was over.
