Gershwin made a few friends in high school but lost touch with them. Before he began his final year, his father bought a house north-west of Toronto and Gershwin had to switch schools and take a bus for the first time because the nearest high school was in Aurora, a larger, neighbouring town. In Toronto, his high school was a five-minute walk from his house and the kids were white and black and Asian and Indian and some were the sons and daughters of immigrants just learning to speak English, and the teachers were young and had long hair and wore jeans. In Aurora, every student was white and Christian, and the teachers were older men and women who dressed like they worked in an office. Because he felt different and because he was Jewish, he expected a cool reception from his new classmates
