The idea was for each robbery to appear as random as possible without being random at all. With the exception of the alarms that protected them, the buildings he broke into had subtle commonalities he hoped only a thief could discern. He picked a neighbourhood in or around Toronto and, after identifying a mark, returned at night, taking a bus or taxi only part of the way before walking. License plates were a giveaway, so he never drove to the scene of a crime. If he did take his car, he parked in another neighbourhood and started and ended his journey from there.
