Chapter 12: Intentions (2) *** Days later I continued working as usual. However I would finally get to meet my new author in person today. Equally excited and anxious I approached her… “Hello, I’m Lois Petterson your new editor. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance and I hope we can work together.” I said in a professional tone. Looking at the young girl much shorter than me I felt like I was going to be babysitting her. Then yet I felt the same way about Mason Taylor when I began working with him, but he proved to be a good author. I sincerely hope it will be the same with Miss Williams. “Hello.” She didn’t even bother introducing herself and just greeted me, then went to sit down and take out the manuscript she had to submit today. “Read it.” She said in an indifferent voice. “Certainly.” I said as I also sat down, just as I expected she’s stuck up. Just because you’re the daughter of some big time entertainment agency’s CEO, doesn’t mean you get to treat me like this! “You’re different… than I expected.” She said after looking me up and down. Well what did you think I look like? I’m an average man in my late twenties, did you expect a model or something?! “Haha… I’m sorry to disappoint you Miss Williams.” I said while trying to still remain calm. “Is it true?” The way that girl spoke to me of course annoyed me to no end, but if I were to say anything back to her I’d be out of my job. “Excuse me? I don’t quite understand, is what true?” I asked her while plastering an awkward smile on my face. “That you’re dating Kane?” She asked while looking me in the eyes. “I’m not dating him, we’re merely colleagues.” I said as I laughed off her words. This couldn’t be the reason she wanted me to be her editor now could it? “Do you know much about him?” Haley asked in an interested voice, so this is it huh… “I don’t really know much…” I hesitated to speak, after I noticed she was losing an interest I understood a simple fact… If I were to say I don’t know anything then she’d probably no longer need me as an editor. So I of course instead I said. “…but I could ask if you’d like?” At those words Haley’s face lit up, her eyes seemed to be glowing. “Yes, please do!” She said in an excited voice, bingo… She’s in love with Kane, well I guess it’s not a big deal. If this makes my work smoother… Too bad she doesn’t have a chance with him after all he’s into men. We managed to go over the manuscript and I suggested the corrections she should make. I think that the simple mention of Kane’s name managed to make her focus more and also be more cooperative with me. Though now I have the obligation to get to know Kane a bit better and report back to her. Which I guess is one of the easier things for me to do. After all, I’ve been meeting up with Kane every single day since that time… * * * After work as usual I met up with him again and we went out to a restaurant. I didn’t take my gloves off but I was able to eat in a public place so that’s also progress! Honestly I’d never thought I’d eat out like this. I hate to admit it… but I’m actually quite thankful to Kane for being so kind to me. “Waaa!!!” There was a child that suddenly started crying, since we were on the table just in front of the restaurant we had a clear view of the kid. “I wonder what happened…” I said as I looked at the kid, he was crying uncontrollably and there was no one next to him to comfort him. “I think he lost his mother, I’ll go see.” Kane said as he stood up from his chair and walked up to the kid. Of course he’d do something like that, it seems like there is nobody else that would. After all in this day and age you could get mistaken for a bad person for just talking to a child. So most of the people passing on the streets just ignored the kid, honestly I would have done the same thing. Soon enough I noticed a woman running and crying towards the child. Kane spoke with her briefly, probably explaining the situation and the woman bowed her head several times. She looked so happy to find her child but also equally distressed that she lost him in the first place. Though it’s not surprising, the streets are crowded today and even adults than get lost in it, not to mention children…   “Was that the mother?” I asked as Kane came back and sat in his chair again. “Rather it was his aunt… He described her pretty well so I managed to recognize her quickly.” Kane said then continued to eat quietly. “You seem to be good with kids…” I remarked unconsciously. “I just know what it’s like to be lost.” Kane said as he turned to look at me. “When I was really young, my father took his eyes off of me for just a minute and I got lost. Thankfully a kind woman helped me find him in the crowd full of people…” The way he spoke, I could tell he holds that memory dear to his heart. “Do you remember what she looked like?” I asked out of simple curiosity. “I don’t… It was probably about fifteen years ago. I don’t have that great of a memory.” Kane said as he smiled lightly. “Though if I could meet her again, I’d like to thank her for what she did.” “It seems like she left a big impression on you…” I remarked. “She did… She even seemed so burdened since she was holding the hand of her own child. I was surprised she stayed with me until father managed to find me.” Kane continued, he seemed to be reminiscing about the past. “Tell me… about your family, what were they like?” I asked while looking up at him. “We weren’t rich but we weren’t poor either… There were difficult times and also times where I thought I was a burden. But they took really good care of me regardless.” Kane’s expression saddened further, I might have just brought up memories he would rather forget. “How did you get into the financial department in Gentleman?” I asked out of curiosity. From what I hear he had a rather humble upbringing, so I thought it was strange he would end up in such a big time company in a completely different city. “It was by complete coincidence really… I never initially had any interest in it until I stumbled on a job opportunity. From then on I just learned the ropes.” Kane explained, and here I thought this was his dream job or something. I feel stupid… I really do… “The same as me…” I muttered unconsciously, thinking that I had something similar with him made me feel a bit odd. “So you didn’t want to be an editor in the first place?” Kane asked after hearing my remark. “Well, I initially wanted to be in finance… but I apparently had no talent and was instead placed in editing. The rest is the same as you, I simply learned how to do my job.” This time I didn’t avoid his gaze as I spoke, it was strange but I felt a bit better. “I think… it’s not because you lacked talent in finances. It might have been because you showed exceptional skills as an editor.” Kane said after several seconds of thought. “I never thought about it like that…” I said as I looked down at my half finished plate. It was a bit embarrassing but I was becoming happy from those words. “I love… the work you do. I’ve read all the novels you’ve worked on. Even my colleagues talk a lot about you…” Kane said, that sudden revelation surprised me. “They talk about me?” I asked with interest, not that I was hoping to hear anything too good, I just thought it was at least a bit flattering to be spoken about…
