Chapter 20

Jacob’s P.O.V “Bella passed the part of seeing her dad?” Sam inquired. “Yeah,” I said. “Now, she must control herself now.” “Yep.” “Before you depart, are you certain about quitting the pack?” “Yes, and we have already discussed this.” “And are Leah and Seth joining you?” “I guess so; they said they quit your pack.” “Oh, okay.” “I got to go. I got to get home.” “Bye.” I left the house, my motorcycle engine roaring to life as I sped up onto the road heading home. Bella’s P.O.V While hanging out with my daughter, Rosalie sat beside me. “Imagine if Alice could warn us about the Volturi,” she mused. “We’d feel less scared and ready for them.” “Yeah,” I said. “Are you worried?” “No, not worried.” “We must ensure her safety.” The mute surrounded me, letting me think. I said, “Renesmee needs a constant protector to ensure her safety.” “What do you mean, protector?” Rosalie asked. “Someone who can make sure nothing happens to her.” “How do you plan to do it?” “It won’t be easy.” Jacob’s P.O.V Upon arriving home, I discovered my dad was still out. I wanted to unwind and freshen up, so I went to my bedroom and took a soothing shower. Then, I changed into comfy clothes. I hadn’t seen him at home, so I went to Charlie’s to check if he was there. When I arrived, I saw a car pull up. I assumed it was Bella because the Cullens are not even allowed here. The car door opened, and I saw Bella leaving the vehicle. “Hey, Bella,” I said. “Oh, hey, Jacob. I also need to talk to you.” “Okay, let’s go inside.” “Alright.” Bella glanced around, finding no one present. “Nobody’s here, so we’re fine.” She said. We sat at the table, feeling the smooth wood against our palms. “What’s on your mind? You wanted to chat?” I inquired. “Hum, it’s about the Volturi. They are coming in a couple of weeks,” Bella responded. “What do you mean the Volturi is coming in a few weeks? That’s too early.” “Yeah, I know, but Alice said they found out about Renesmee and think it’s an immortal child.” “I thought Alice left.” “Yeah, but she left a letter saying they were coming. She will return after finding someone like Renesmee and revealing they are not bad.” “Well, I asked the pack if we could help.” “Jake, they could kill you.” “Bella, remember when I said that we were faster? We are, and I bet we can kill them faster, and I agreed with Edward that I would help.” “I know. I don’t want you hurt again.” “I know I’ll do the best I can to survive.” “I hope so.” Worry and fear etched Bella’s face. Her genuine care for me took me by surprise. “Come here,” I said. Bella came over. I hugged her. “Last time you got hurt was fighting newborns,” she said. “I know. I’ll make sure that won’t happen again,” I stated. “About that. I need someone to protect Renesmee when I fight.” “What do you mean you need someone to protect her?” “I need you to protect her, to keep her away from them.” “Oh, okay, I’ll do it.” “Great, Jacob, you’re the best.” Bella hugged me tightly. “Bella, I’m still half-human,” I joked. Bella loosened her grip. “Oops, my bad,” she apologized. “It’s okay.” “Well, I better go.” “Okay.” Bella then left my kitchen, the door creaking open and echoing through the house. I must inform Seth, Leah, and the rest of Sam’s pack that I won’t participate in the fight.
