Chapter 6
For two days, Ren and Darzul stayed at Alex Macalister and Manuel Ortega’s neat adobe home on the outskirts of Ajo, Arizona. Even though Alex and Manuel were away on POU business, agents helped each other. Ren and Alex had become friends during Ren’s probationary period. Clay Chiles often teamed a junior and senior officer together while the new person learned the ropes. Usually that worked well and a few became permanent partners, but since Alex and Manuel had bonded early in Manuel’s tenure with POU, Ren was careful to keep a physical and emotional distance. Still, the two got along and had developed a deep respect for each other, so Ren felt comfortable bringing Darzul to the house.
