Dean:
"Did they say what they were looking for?" I asked Reggie.
"No, but Diandra said they'd be here-after three. She sounded a little freaked out. I know for a fact that she wouldn't be asking if it wasn't super important,"
"What do you think?"
"I don't know, man. Hopefully, it's not that bad. I'm kind of excited though," he picked up a rock making it skip over the water eight times when he tossed it.
"You would be excited to meet the next biggest alpha and his demon spawn of a sister,"
"I don't think she's all bad. The packs that were taken were all little b***h packs with pricks for leaders. They're better off dead. If you can't hold the title why take it?"
"She's a cannibal, Reggie. She eats her kills. I know you've read the reports. Colonial wolf records are the only ones that are public in the council halls,"
"We all eat our kills. Especially alphas. You wouldn't understand it," he tried to brush me off.
"Why because I've never been in a real battle?" I asked.
"Odds are, you never will little brother and that is something you should be grateful for. It was a battle that turned that girl into a demon, alright? The things we do and see they aren't natural. I'd hate for you to be caught in something like that,"
"We turn into massive wolves, my brother. There is nothing natural about us,"
"How goes princess, Riley?" he changed the subject. I growled at him.
"You can at least pretend to get along with her. She's my mate,"
"I like her well enough, Dean. She's a great girl. It's just... Nevermind," he waved me off before bending down to place his hand in the water.
"What?" I asked sitting down against the tree behind him.
"She's an alpha. You know that right? I find it hard to believe that she allowed this s**t to happen to her,"
"You think she's lying?"
"No, man, f**k no. Anyone with common sense can see how lost she is. It's just... you know. We're trained to be leaders, not damsels. She walks and talks like an alpha why the f**k didn't she act like one when it was time to?"
"We don't know what happened, Reg,"
"No, we don't. Things like this don't just happen to our breed. Even the demon beta came out on top against one. It's our job to be on alert at all times,"
"He was also alpha?" I asked.
"Yeah, but not like us. We were born into this. We've had our entire life to master it. If that prick had the training we'd have a different demon wolf running around,"
"I have to go. I promised Riley that I'd take her down to the fighter's rink this morning. I'll see you later. Tell me if she's all the hype," I dismissed him, not wanting to hear more of the s**t he was saying about my mate.
"I hope she's hot," he smirked.
"I'll see you later." I laughed.
Riley is talking to some of the girls from the packhouse, which unsettles me. The one to her right we had been a thing once upon a time. We got what we wanted from one another and then moved on. I walked over to them catching Riley's attention. She followed me after she excused herself. She gave me the look. The one that let me know I'm in trouble.
"Reggie says hi," I laughed.
"f**k you guys," she smirked.
"Making yourself at home I see," I complimented, looking back at the group of girls that had turned around to gossip.
"Kambria was just letting me know she had you first," she giggled. I stopped closing my eyes.
"You're kidding,"
"It's cool. You're an adult. I mean I don't even know who I am so. I have no room to judge," she motioned me to keep leading the way.
"Reggie was telling me that maybe if we go back to your territory maybe you might remember something. He said we should go by morning so we don't run into trouble. Maybe cover you up a little in case someone is there,"
"You guys have nothing better to do than talk about me?" she asked it was a little rude.
"You're a new subject Riley, but not the only one. He said an upcoming alpha had set up a meeting with him,"
"The alpha who has a demon sister?" she asked.
"Yeah, his name is Mikhail Hemingway,"
"The fighter?" she asked.
"Fighter?"
"Yeah, UFC. Why the hell do I remember that?" she asked looking down at her hands. "What's the demon's name?"
"Rip Hemingway,"
"Rip?" she whispered something along the lines of familiar flashed in her eyes. "Do you have a phone?"
"Yeah," I nodded handing it to her.
She used it like she had been addicted to texting. She showed me the screen. There's a painting. It's beautiful. She scrolled through to show other paintings. They were just as amazing. I don't understand why she's showing me an entire art gallery.
"She's an artist. I saw her on TV last night. Her painting s***h sculpture thing it sold for ten point six million. Just the one. Her gallery sold out by the third night. The media is eating her up,"
"She looks so innocent. Like she wouldn't harm a fly," I scoffed in disbelief. She sighed.
"Odds are, she probably is. The people who have done the most horrible things do them because they never knew what innocence was. They didn't know better. Some people grow up really fast. One second they're happy kids and the next they've become the monsters they never wanted to be,"
"Is that what happened to you?" I asked taking my phone back. She looked up at me with a small smile.
"I don't know. If it is would you still have me?" she asked.
"Of course I would. I want to help you find who you are. It doesn't change what I'm starting to feel," the way she's looking at me is skeptical.
"Starting to feel?" she asked like she didn't believe me.
"Yeah, aren't you starting to feel our connection... I don't know. Cement?" I asked.
"Cement?" she grinned. "I mean, yeah. I guess that's a way of putting things cause a mating is set in stone,"
"Exactly," I nodded.
She didn't exactly answer my question but I don't want to pressure one out of her either. Reggie told me alphas are like that. They like to do things their way. They don't act like regular wolves. Their need to be surrounded by pack members is different because they're the leaders. I wasn't born an alpha the way they were. My dad is training me to take over after he killed the former alpha of our pack. I just don't know if I'm prepared for it.
