Prologue
Riley:
The fire started in the lower levels of the packhouse. My priority right now is the pups and pregnant women. I've never seen fire spread like this. It's like everything here is made out of something flammable. It's all coming down around me.
There is no way out. The flames split us all up. I'm glad she's on the side where it's easy to find a way out. Her cries call to me, but there is only one thing I can do. All I can do is, promise that I'll see her again. I refuse to go like this. This death is not acceptable for someone like me. Not after everything I've been through to get here.
"Riley!" my name echoed around in the darkness of the smoke.
"I'll be okay. Get out of here," I shouted, trying not to panic.
I looked around trying to make out something other than flames and smoke. The restroom. I rushed in looking around for a window. It's small, but I have to do it. There was no time to be too careful. Using my elbow, I smashed the glass and continued to hit it until the frame fell out to the other side.
The smoke is getting to me. I could barely breathe. Trying to hold back my coughing, I jumped up barely squeezing through the window. The sound of the roof caving in made me flinch back. The ceiling came down on me. I pushed myself towards the fresh air trying to escape. The burns would be minor. I will heal with no permanent damage. I hit the ground chest first almost landing on my face.
I tried pulling away from what had me trapped. My legs slid out easily. I began to try and crawl away when the clashing sounds echoed behind me. I turned to see the bricks that had made the chimney of what was left of my home teeter over. It's going to crush me. This is it. I've always hated that thing and now it's going to be the thing that ends me. I have no regrets. I've lived my life the way I've always wanted to.
I had called Rip. She should be here by now. They'll take care of her, of them. The pack will be fine. I hope she can figure out why it is we were attacked. The fate of our world might have to come down to the Demon wolf saving it. I know she doesn't care about the council. They had excluded her and her family from it. But this is more important than pride. This is the fate of all werewolves that serve under the shadows of the moon.
Dean:
It looks like the place had been evacuated as soon as the fire started. There is nothing left of what once had been a packhouse. The attack must have taken them all by surprise. There are bodies scattered all around the house. Some are still in their pelt, others, the much younger ones they are dead. Kids, women, fighters, all dead. It is the hard truth of what it meant to be a wolf. Savage.
"Dean, run the perimeter take Eddie with you," my dad ordered.
It hurts to see another pack in distress like this. More for us who have the burden of being an alpha. We are new to this territory we don't know much of whose pack this had been much less how big. From what I can tell, by the size of the house, it must have been grand.
"Dean," I looked back to see Eddie trying to move some of the rubble.
I rushed over to him and began to help him. The smell hit me first. My beast surging forward wanting what is under all of this now. A girl. No the girl. My mate. I pushed most of what had crushed her off. She's dying. Panic rose in me as I tried desperately to get to her.
"Get the doctor now," I shouted.
"Dean, she's done," Eddie tried to stop me, stepping away.
"No, she can't be. Ed, go get my dad. Do something. She's going to die. She's my mate," I growled. Panic sparked in his eyes as he turned back in the direction we had come from and took off running.
I can feel the strength coming off of her. Was she the alpha? The alpha's daughter? There are so man burns, and scratches from the brick collapsing on her. This can't be my fate. I can't hold what's mine in my arms like this briefly. I refuse to lose everything without knowing what it could have been.
"Come on, you have to stay with me. Please," I pleaded.
"Dean?" my dad called out, coming towards me with a few others.
"Dad, she's dying," I whispered trying to listen in on her slow heartbeats.
"Son, we have to let them take her," he tired to pull me away from her as the doctors all rushed to tend to her.
"You're going to be okay," I whispered into her ear. "I promise,"
"Rosalie," she whispered back. "Find Rose,"
They put her on a stretcher and began to haul her away. I looked at my dad unable to process what's happening right now. He had others come turn everything. There was no one else. There is no one here. She had been the only one. Could Rosalie be one of the little girls that had been killed trying to escape? Who is Rosalie to my mate? How destroyed will she be when she finds that I didn't find who she could have died trying to save?
Rosalie:
"Where is she?" I growled shoving Mikhail out of the way.
"Rose, you need to calm down. We'll find her," Rip tried standing in my way.
"Rip, get out of the way. My sister is out there,"
"There is no one there. Anyone who stayed behind was taken or killed," she informed me.
"She's not dead," I reassured her, turning away from her to face her brother.
Mikhail and Ezra pulled me into a hug. The hysterics are starting. I can feel just how much of our bond had diminished. She's out there somewhere dying. There is no way we could head back without compromising everyone here. The pregnant she wolves the pups, she would choose the pack. It's the way we had been raised.
"We're taking you back with us, Rose. No arguments," Rip sighed, covering me with a warm blanket.
"We'll get you established with us. I'll send seekers, alright? If she's alive we'll find her," Mikhail added.
"Come on sweetie let's go," I let Luna Ezra lead me towards their car.
In one night everything had been ripped from the two of us. I know she's out there, There is no way in hell she's dead. We've been through things that are much harder than this. Mikhail and Rip are talking to one another. I want to know what they're saying.
My cousins had barely made in time. The rogues had surrounded our pack. My parents, the pups in the outskirts, they're all dead. A handful of us made it out of the packhouse. The attack had come out of nowhere. There had been no rogue activity in months and then this? It doesn't make any sense.
"You're human," I turned to Luna Ezra.
"Yeah," she nodded wiping away my tears.
"I've never been this close to a human before," she smiled.
"I'm not gonna bite,"
"Why would you? You aren't strong enough to do so anyway,"
She laughed."I like her,"
"Luna Miranda?" I smiled at my uncle's mate. She shook her head.
"Luna Melissa. Miranda and I are like you and Riley,"
"Really? I wasn't aware," she's right this woman is nothing like my aunt Miranda. Where Miranda is cold and astute, she's comfortable and warm. She's also stronger.
"Long story. I'm Rip's mom,"
"Yes, you feel like her. Different, but closer to her than anyone else,"
"Mikhail wants us all to head back and get them settled. Rip is staying here with Holland and Audrey," I looked at the man in the passenger's seat. He looks a lot like Mikhail, but like Rip too.
"Hey. I'm Grayson," he introduced himself.
"Rosalie," I greeted.
"Rip is staying," Mikhail stated, getting the driver's seat.
"Shouldn't one of us stay with her?" Luna Ezra asked.
"No, dad needs us back home. Rip is only staying to scout out for Riley. She said she could feel her, but there's something blocking the connection. She can't get a good read,"
Luna Melissa sighed. "It could mean many things. Perhaps I should stay as well. The girl might have lost who she is,"
"What does that mean?" I asked. "I want to stay too,"
"No, to both of you. Dad would kill me if I left you here, Mel. Rose, you're hurt. You'd only hold Rip back. If she's here Rip will find her. She's never lost, anyone,"
"Unless it was on purpose," Luna Ezra shrugged.
"Babe," he scolded, looking at her. "Really?"
"I'm just saying,"
"What?" I asked looking at all of them.
"Sleep," Luna Melissa reached for me, placing her hand on my head.
They all faded before I could argue.
